Oprano Challenge Progress Thread

The contestants in the challenge will post their progress reports and seek outside advice, criticism and reviews right here.

I will start. I have not decided what I am building, I have not decided what domain it will be on. I have not decided on the sponsors.

All I know is that I have Mr. X on my side in this and since he has been on the net since the very very beginning and he basically (according to what I have heard) invented the Adult Internet, I am sure I will win :)

Here is my progress report:

I have decided on a rough strategy and have drawn out what I think this mess will look like I have decided which domain(s) to use and have changed my dns to unpark and point at my server.

I have actually written a little code :)

I also wanted to share an icq conversation that Mr. X and I had last night, I think you all can learn something from his wisdom:

sarettah: Ok, so what should I be building ? I have not a clue.

mrx: Banner farms baby, that's where it's at. About 200,000 pages of niche specific banner farms. Then you take the hit and you bounce them back and forth, don't let them out unless they click on something. They shut down their browser, turn it back on, if you can get a couple of toolbars and shit downloaded along the way that would be good too.

sarettah: shit, that doesn't sound great. I though banner farms went out in like '97 and toolbars and downloads ? I hate the fuckers that do that to my computer.

mrx: look fuckhead, you want my help or not? Banner farms, yeah, whats old is new again. The surfers out there now adays have never seen a banner farm before, they'll click right in. Did I mention lots of blind links, hell make the whole page one big giant link, no matter where they click they're at something you sell. They try to get out bombard the hell out of them with all the shit you can find. It will teach them to buy something if everytime they come looking for free crap they have to go buy a new fucking computer. No fucking mercy. Don't be a fucking little mamby pamby dweeb. OK progress report.

We have a general idea of what we are building but havent quite come to the FULL conclusion of the task. Eclectixxx passed on about 4 novels of reading for me to "freshen up on" and once im done his laundry, dinner, and sorting his emails i will start to read them. (BTW EC..starched or not?)

Spent a couple hrs looking threw the sponsors and the content providers and im pretty sure we got this thing wrapped up..heh (confidence helps no??) Some simply awesome content from Exclusive Content (http://www.exclusivecontent.com/enter/) and Amazing Content (http://www.amazingcontent.com/) and im sure it will make all the diferance on conversions.

PS hey Bill...if we use PMB as our main sponsor do we get a text link on your internal contest pages??...heh

The site idea that Trev and myself have in mind really just breaks down to filtering, very little content (if any) but lots of pages with lots of pushing.

Grabbed a nice piece of script that pops consoles no matter what pop-up blocker is used, so recycling hits won't be a problem :)

Maybe my status should be changed from Becki the newbie to Becki the Grump :biglaugh:

Ok, done with the responsibilities part of the weekend.

Daughter is back with Mom (I hate that part :( )

Lawn is mowed. Pool cover has been pumped dry (had enough water in it that 2 ducks have stopped by the past 2 days)

Went and saw Hitchhikers Guide and had a good dinner, so it is time to get to work.

Hopefully by tommorrow evening I will have the entire framework of what we are going to do laid out, then it will be a matter of going in and filling in the holes. :)

Well, I made all sorts of progress this weekend.

Let's see, I got the entire lawn mowed, I got the bushes trimmed, I weedeated the entire back fence and I took the team pictures for a 13 year old girls soccer team.

Didn't get shit done on the build though :(

I thouht I was making good progress. Then Trev asked where I had got the Javascript pop-up script from. After I told him from Virgin18 I was called a few choice names and told to find another :(

I've spent about 6 hours working on another, but it's still not as good as the first one I was using.

Well, we are down to the last day and we have some issues (self caused by me) to get ironed out.

There is a chance that the hit delivery will start tonight (the original schedule) in which case, the landing page and trade pages will be run from my server (because they are already set up there for testing) but I have contacted the hit guy and asked him to extend the delivery dqate to Friday so that I can get the scripts on to a neutral server. Unfortunately, he will be in a major meeting between tommorrow and saturday, so if the date gets extended out, it might have to go into next week.

Anyway. I will keep everyone updated as to what is going on today.

On site progress, I am far from done :( but I will deal.

I have just finished yakking (via icq) with the hit man.

We are moving the sales part of the contest to commence next Wednesday or Thursday.

This is because of a technical snafu on my part. I was going to move it to this Friday (the 13th) but the hitman and crew are involved in a project that will tie up their time through Sunday or so.

I will be getting with them on Monday to iron out the technical issues.

So, all teams have an additional week for building their stuff.

Since this was an exercise in building a mousetrap, collecting emails, etc. It had to be done a certain way.

But, to just flat out make money, that would take roughly 5 minutes + the right traffic.

I just reset all the counters to zero and in a bit, the hitman should turn on the traffic.

It is 40k hits, but they are being delivered across whatever time period the hitman decides, so I don't expect to see major major server bumps going on, but hopefully, I will be surprised :)

I had thought about GEO tracking stuff but instead I just went out to Google and tracked down the entire Visa and Matercard databases and used that instead (they know your ip, imagine that :yowsa: )

I don't think I do, but haven't checked all of my stats yet either.

The contest has received 2041 hits thus far which equates to about 100 hits an hour, so each team is seeing about 25 contest hits an hour, but, with the trade script in place it plays like a circle jerk of sorts, so each team is potentially see the 25 new hits an hour plus about another 75 recycled hits.

Just checked and no... funny thing is though that my stats say I've sent 67 uniques to AdultfriendFinder yet they say I've sent 2...

If this keeps up AdultDateLink will be coming out of the console and will be replacing them on the main page when I continue the build in the morning.

Yeah, I'm seeing some descrepancies myself. I am counting everything that clicks and comparing them.

So far PMB seems to be the most honest sponsor I have in there.

Anyway, I just found a major fuckup I made. On the last build before the contest started I somehow managed to wipe the onclick code on all my sponsor links.

So, apparently, if you clicked a sponsor link on my site, in addition to going to the sponsor page, I was popping the trade link too.

I imagine that probably pissed off a few folks.

Also, clicking around a bit I ended up in a maxcash popup maze (and they get real fucking aggresive) and at some point in there it looked to me like it was trying to dl a toolbar on my ass :blink:

Like I say, it looked like it, but it might not have been so, I am gonna have to investigate. But first I have to get off this box (I'm at my '98 backup box) and get on to my fully patched XP box to check :huh:

so 5000/4=hmmm (math never was my strong suit :)) should be, hmmm carry the one...err...lets see, thats like 1250 to each team.... But will be higher since I had to take one team out of the rotation..

Trev and I are getting some free email signups. I know NickP reported $1.50 in revenue and Trev reported $1.20 in revenue :(

We are all using 3 toitally different approaches and nobody is biting. I have tweaked out several times and am getting ready to do a complete overhaul for the second half of the contest.

we are at 16,700 hits into the contest so far and avaeraging 100 hits an hour (more or less) so we will be into the second half in about 2 days.

from 9 sponsors that I was sending to:

I got 1 1.95 trial (Naughty America)

and 1 $30.00 sale (Perfectgonzo)
