This is talking about free sites and tgps pushing traffic to the sponsor. Paysites are a different game, at least imho....

Well ?

It has been my feeling for a long time now that except for whatever rules a linklist or tgp lays on you that sites should be built as quick and down and dirty as possible which usually results in an ugly site.

Does it matter ?

Nick, I know you have an opinion or three on this..lol...I think you probably do to Gonz..

Newbie leftbacks (me) want to know.... :yowsa:

lolol... I kind of knew where you stood on the issue :)

exactly, they didn't come to see the logo, they didn't come to read all your text.

They came for pics and videos and wank material and nothing else :okthumb:

Know your traffic and you will know what sells. If you dont know what people are looking for when they come to your site..... free or pay. Then you dont know your traffic.

I've always made ugly sites. I love text links and long ones that are very descriptive. I would get less clicks that others but my ratios were always extremely nice so I didn't need the big click through ratios because anyone who read one of my mini-story text links was a motivated surfer.

I like my toplists with thumbnail links to site doorways and/or FPAs. Add some blurs and exits off them and its even better!

This one moves traffic and makes sales

Free content sucks ass.

Basically what Gonzo said.

There is no one answer. It depends on what you're selling and who's your audience.

That would all depend on which site, which product and which service. B)

Invalid poll. Should be a selection "depends on the niche."

why should there be a "depends on niche" ?

Do you think certain niches respond to pretty better than ugly or vica versa ?

Please explain if you can...

Thanx :)

TO ME its not niche i would base it on but the type of traffic coming in.

Hits from the search engines...little page design and MAKE them click to the sponsor, off your page through your code, where as tgp/mgp traffic etc, needs a good teasing, and design and layout has more to do with converting it.

Thank you for sharing how you manage to get your 3 sales a week Dravyk , ahahahahahahahahahahahaah. ;-))))

Look..

Refresh the traffic to a pay site depending on what "niche" they are looking for. Its amazing what sort of things a server can do.

It can see where it came from , where the person lives and what the person is looking for and lots more..

Let it do the work :)

I've tried both ways, ugly and nice. Neither had much affect on sales but nice used up more bandwidth.

Only webmasters should see the show site though

Real webmasters are fewer and farther bwetween these days.

Most "webmasters" are really glorified surfers.

They are only a few declined galleries from trying to get a shift at McDonalds.

You need a bit of both. Nothing is going to appeal to everyone or even the majority of everyone.

Some surfers like pretty sites, some don't care and the uglies do just fine. Just like some like shaved, some hairy. Some like small boobs, some like big. Some like young teens some like old chicks. Some like skin and bones, some like BBWs. Some like airbrushed beauties, some like the girl from the trailer next door.

You're NEVER going to make one type of site and make everyone happy. Make ugly, make pretty. I'd even do half and half.

OK, I'm looking at this from the end service provider's point of view (i.e., how a PAYSITE should look) rather than how a TGP/MGP gallery should look. If you're in the Playboy "exquisite glamour" niche, your site design HAS to be a lot different than if you're selling to the Meatholes crowd. It's just common sense.

From personal experience, I'd gauge things by where the niche falls on the "glamour to grunge" meter, and design accordingly. A plain black background with minimal design other than keyphrase text is going to have a much harder time selling to the glamour crowd than it will to the extreme crowd.

In other words, I could see a heavily designed site working far better for an extreme site, than I could see a sparsely designed site working for a softcore glam site. An amateur single model site should usually have a looser non-corporate looking design. That's my line of thinking.

And Nick, before you post more stuff about "who cares about design, just send your traffic somewhere else," well, you're correct for traffic aggregators, but you gotta send your traffic SOMEWHERE. And if the place you're sending the traffic to is designing incorrectly for their niche, it ain't gonna convert and you have to find a different place to send it. You can say "just refresh to someone else's paysite" but you better refresh it to a frontend that's designed correctly for the niche. So proper design DOES effect guys like you, too. :)

ThrobX I think Sarettah is talking about free sites, not paysites :)

There are valid points on all sides of the wall here. But, in free site design, ugly works best hands down. If you're a link site, pretty is good. Persian Kitty for example is pleasant as she wants bookmarkers and the like.

If you're a content based site you want to shuck the punter as soon as possible to something that interests them. That's where filtering your traffic is important if you don't know what the punters are looking for.

Make good use of pre selling if you're good at it and just link them to the join page.

After you've gone to all that trouble getting the surfer ready to buy and clicking on a JOIN NOW FOR ONLY A BUCK! Don't send them to the full tour and fuck up your sale.

Join page! :okthumb:

Just re-read the first post and... you are 100% correct. And as far as free sites go, I'm more on the side of "ugly is better," unless you're trying to pre-sell a really glam site. In which case, I believe it's usually better to have continuity between pre-sales and paysite.

BTW, great tip from BillPMB about linking directly to the JOIN page, that's golden. If you're truly doing the selling in your freesite/gallery page, why not? At the very least, give them a big ol' "I'M READY - CLICK HERE TO JOIN NOW" flashing highlighted link to click on. Land them when they're on the hook. :okthumb:
