A friend of mine and I were discussing going to Italy today. Any suggestions on when the best/worst time is? We want good weather and as few people as possible.

And now that I've started looking at flights, where's the best PLACE to go in Italy? We will probably only have a week.
I've worked in both Venice and Rome and I couldn't recommend anywhere more highly than them both :)
However I was working a 8-6 shift at the time and I got to see very little of the day but the nights were fantastic, good food, drink and the scenery is breath taking
:okthumb:
Edit: I was going to recommend May :)

Time : end of September
Schools children and Euro vacationaires out safely back and the weather is still GORGEOUS,
not hot, not cold.
If this is your first time, go with organised tours like Globus or Trafalgar..
it's cheaper and you'll see all the highlights without THINKING about anything.
DO NOT GO TO ITALY for the first time on your own,
you'll miss it all by going by yourself.
Here is the link to the tour which I beleive is the best based on your time availability and expereince,
I took the similar one in 1997 and my daughter this year:

we'll be there at the end of September/October. We'll go North we know the least.

Peaches, our travel MO is:
1) go organised and see the highlights
2) mark places you wanna come back
3) come back on your own to the places you like
4) never rent the hotel-
apartments are cheaper and provide 3-4 times more room.
if you have ANY specific questions-
hit me on ICQ, e-mail or PM

Serge, is it better to do just the ground tour or are the flights included decent? I don't want to end up spending 3 days on a plane.

all those tours have no internal flights...you go with the tour on the coach. Both Trafalgar and Globus and Cosmos have very knowlegable and local guides.
Take a Fodor's book with you to fill your free time and see places not incuded in the tour. When you book it, hit me and I'll give you the best restaurants in Rome and Florence which won't break your wallet and proide the best examples of local cusine..YES, every region in Italy has it';s own specialties.

the chance to see all the Italy in 7 days are equal to the chance of getting all Internet non-adults board flavors in 7 days...
;)
Even God himself can't do it

I meant are the flights decent from the US? i.e. is it a direct flight? Decent airlines? Or is it better to arrange your own flight there?

ALWAYS arrange your own flight.
1) it's cheaper
2) more chances to get there direct,
as Tour companies can't give rat's ass about your conveniences and tied up to the "bargains" they negotiated to themselves. You can buy for extra $50 transfers to and out of the airport from them
(The taxi ride from airport to Rome is about $50-60 Euros, so it's worth it)

P.S. every man loses his sense of humor when it comes to important and personal things. For me it's Italy. Will you maintain your composure and sense of humow if I talk nonsense about your dick?
:)
I don't think so....
