Police have arrested an employee of a firm that operates sexually explicit Web sites in Nishinari Ward, Osaka, and four others on suspicion of extorting money from people who accessed the sites.
The police obtained an arrest warrant Tuesday for Toshiaki Nakanishi, 40, the firm's president, on suspicion of hiding unlawful earnings collected from the sites in bank accounts obtained via the Internet.
The case is the first so-called one-click site-related fraud to be investigated by police. The Osaka prefectural police believe thousands have been victimized by the scheme and have wrongly paid out about 660 million yen.
According to the police, Junko Suematsu, an employee of the firm, and the four others were arrested for threatening a company president of Hyogo Prefecture who had accessed one of the Web sites.
They threatened the president, who is in his 60s, over the phone, posing as debt collectors and demanding he pay the fees or they would barge into his house and his company. The president paid 1.12 million yen on four different occasions to a bank account, the police said.
Nakanishi is suspected of transferring the money into other accounts held under different names that were purchased through the Internet.
The police said Nakanishi and the other suspects created Web sites that falsely advertised pornographic pictures. Unlike other similar sites that confirm the users' intent to register, clicking anywhere on the firm's sites will cause the message "membership registration is completed" to appear, from which time the user is required to pay fees.
No pornographic materials, however, are available on the Web sites, so when users try to cancel their memberships, they must register their phone numbers with Nakanishi's computer server.
Nakanishi ordered about 50 subordinates, including Suematsu, to threaten phone users using numbers and data collected by the server.
