View Full Version : My ICQ is fucked

It locked up on me last night and this AM when I turned on the computer it says there's an error and asks if I want to sent a report. I do. I try to open it again and get the same but there seems to be a background window asking me if I want to download the new version. Both "notice" windows (the error and the asking if I wanted the new version) completely locked up and I coudn't even move them out of the way so when I rebooted the next time, I immediately closed ICQ down before it had a chance to launch.

This is ICQ Lite d the Icon has a "4" on it if that helps.

Any ideas?

I hate ICQ lite...

Doesnt help you in any way, but helps me vent.

Start by re-installing the version you have. If that doesnt work, you might consider upgrading.

Now that ICQ saves your contact list on their servers, it's not such a dramatic thing to fuck up an ICQ installation. (depending on how much you rely on 'history').

I am lost w/o my history :(

For shits and grins I tried launching it again. I see the "Do you want to download our new BS?" window flash quickly then disappear. I try to click on the icon in my tray and nothing - I mean nothing.

Isn't the history saved somewhere on my HD? Can I save the history file and then put it back into the new ICQ folder?

Peaches,
I'm not an expert, but any information stored in the files of the software, is gone when the software is removed or deleted.

Maybe somebody who reads this can offer better assistance.

I'm not sure which of the icq subfolders the history is stored in as I dont run lite but you can do:

windows explorer---> program files ---> icq

then highlight all the folders inside and copy them to your my documents, don't copy any of the .dll or .exe from the main icq folder just the folders inside of it.

Better yet tell me what folders are in there and I'll tell you which one your history is stored in :)

Try this:

Windows Explore
+My Computer
+Local Disk (C:)
+Program Files
+ICQ

Keep in mind ICQ is still installed in my computer.

Hope this helps you retrive your files.

Peaches,

I am not sure how to get history. I have tried finding it before and I think it is impossible:) What I did find was a possible fix to your problem. I guess they want you to upgrade to continue but according to this thread you can download a patch or something to stop this? Might be worth a read and a try...here it is!

None of the folders look like history folders, but it's got to be there somewhere. I'll deal with it later. If anyone needs to ICQ me - email me a peaches@onlinebeach.com

Thanks for the link, T - I'm afraid to download and install before I figure out where those history files are. :(

What about something like this to extract the history?

There's no folder named history but you should either have a build folder like 2002a (within the main icq folder) or something along them lines... thats usually where the .dat and .idx files are stored... and they are those ever searched for history files...

Peaches, I found it!

I had an old computer lying around that had ICQlite and after some searching I found it.

Follow this path and change my ICQ to your ICQ and you should see folders of everyone with the history etc.

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\ICQLite\HistoryDB\61462417

I hope this helps:)

BTW I couldn't find it by clicking documents and settings, owner etc. but once I found the path and put that in a browser it went right there:)

Tonda is my new technical guru! Being the dunce that I am she had to walk me through it (I have now realized she and I do not have the same ICQ number and my document folder has my name on it) but ICQ history has been found.

Thank you!!!!

I was about to say, if you really wanted help with your ICQ history, you can always ask the boys from Azure. :)

Glad you got it worked out ... but FYI, when I upgraded from Lite to Pro, and when I upgraded Pro to the latest version, all my history transferred over

Peaches use the new Trillian.. It has a history for all the messengers (not even the Pro version) and it is much more user friendly than the older version - I hadn't used it since Trillian 1.0 and I am finding it really nice to work with this time around. Between that and skype you don't need much else :)

Only thing that sucks about the histories is they are in .txt format not .rtf
