Who here does charity work?
I mean more than writing a check. I mean actually getting up on your feet and performing something for someone less fortunate than you.

I admit in recent years I haven't done much.
But I have helped out at shelters (Old Mission Brewery in Montreal) years ago, and when I was a teen, I delivered groceries and food to the elderly folks in my hometown.

I rehab animals for a animal rescue by me. I usually have dogs, cats, goats, sheep, and pigs.
No large animal though. Big critters like horses are too big for my likes.

I do volunteer for Special Olympics and since moving to Atlanta I have done some volunteer work with Hosea Williams (http://www.hoseafeedthehungry.com). I just helped with the set up last Thanksgiving and I worked in the kitchen helping to cook at Christmas.

I am selfish, however. I enjoy helping others and it makes ME feel good.

I really enjoy working with the elderly. You can learn so much from just listening to them.

read some books and gave out some toys to some poor youngsters around xmas at some church event. kinda felt bad subjecting them to the cultiness of a church setting though.

I get my leftovers from dinner in a doggy bag and throw in a buncha bread and stuff, give em to a bum when possible. Not all meals though...

I also gave a bum a bottle of bacardi to not scrounge in our neighbors dumpsters late at night because it can bother the people on the lower level of our building. It was like christmas came early for that fucker.

Good for you kathi... at least you're doing something.

In recent years I've found that most people in this world are so self-absorbed they don't know or care what is happening to their neighbour.

From 1992 through 2002 I gave my time on Saturdays and Sundays mornings, to the Arlington Night Shelter. I was then transferred out of state.

I'm going back to giving my time to those who are less fortunate...I feel it gives me balance in my life.

yes, but it never feels like enough.

I have a personal issue with giving money to charities, as I don't think it does anything but line someone's pockets and pay for more advertising.

real charity is getting off your ass and going out of your way to do something to help someone - no matter what it is, where ya do it or who its for.

Yep. When I lived in Phoenix I worked with the 2030 organization, which is a loose coalition of regional chapters who do hands on work with their recipients as well as raising money for them.

In LA, I spend time with accesstosailing.org, taking disabled and handicapped people out on the water to learn to sail. I usually spend an average of two days per month volunteering.

I don't do fuck all.

I USED to.I USED to do a lot.

But in the last few years , hardly anything.

I write the occasional check and open a big track of wilderness land on the Easy Coast to Inner city kids.

But basically I do nothing.

I'd say hardly any of us do.

KK I'll bet you haven't done 6 days with accesstosailing.org.

Admit it , you really do nothing. I do nothing.

We all would love to do something this thread was quiet as hell for hours and hours , why? It embarasses us , Cause we all wish we did something , but really we don't.

Ah well....

The Night Shelter is available to those individuals needing a place to spend the night. In the morning I helped others prepare breakfast. All those staying at the Night Shelter had to leave by 8 a.m. and go find work or spend the day at the Day Shelter. The Night Shelter would open again at 7 p.m. and close the following day at 8 a.m.

Thinking about doing some charity work?
