OK after one throat cancer scare , lung cancer scare , and smoking 80 cigs a day for 30 yrs , I'm quitting.

I have all the stuff, nicorette inhaler , the gum , zyban all of it.

The first day was yesterday.

I am very pleased instead of 80 cigs I had 5.

Hell if I could maintain that I'd be delighted.

Anyone else quit? Really cut back?

Its a living hell! I mean I quit coke , booze , and seriously , compared to this quitting them was a peice of piss.

I never really even think of drinking (maybe once in a blue moon I think "A nice glass of wine would be pleasent) , but cigarettes? I want one now , I will still want one in a minute...

Seriously fuck comibng off coke , its a cake walk compared to quitting smoking.

first few days are the worst by far, 2-4 days after you quit you will begin to foget about it and get used to not smoking, a few weeks out you will begin to be proud of yourself

stand strong

I quit about 18 years ago, but I was never a heavy smoker - 10-15 a day, maybe 20 if drinks were involved :awinky:

This was before the day of the patch, gum, pills etc. - I just had to take it like a man!

I will tell you one thing, you will find nicotine has the strongest urge addiction of ANYTHING else. There are still times when I'm drinking when I crave a cigarette, even after all these years.

But quitting can be done :) Get your kids to harrass you about stopping - they're pretty persistent :okthumb:

80 a day?!

I would have opened a convenience store in your basement...

I think cutting back is for pussies...

I never understood smoking...

Here's two really easy reasons to help stop.

1. what is it now? 50%? 50% of the money you spend on cigarettes goes to taxes/government. I know you hate the governement and certainly wouldnt voluntarly give them all that money?

2. And the only needed reason for me. You have kids. What would you do if I came into your house and slapped your kids around? Well you are doing much worse to them, voluntarly, and paying good money for it, while destroying your own health...

So your enjoyment is above your kids health on your list of priority? Not me...

Sorry, the idea of smoking really pisses me off...
and Im no saint... but man, cigarettes... what an awesome marketing ploy...

corvett ,
Great post! Loght at the end of the tunnel.

and then peaches depressed me again...lol

The kids already have been ,they been doing a lot at school , especially my eldest.I think its great. They are getting the shock treatment of what smoking can do.

My 12 yr old saying that with cigs here at nearly $9 a pack , and then factor in cigars , I spend , approximately $1200 - $1500 per month and she of course is right!!!

I mean thats an obscenity really to spend on something thats gonna kill ya.
I'm 44 , my mother died at 47 (from , ya, you guessed,smoking)

Yup I quite 4yrs ago in June.

seriously, just step away from work, and anything else that will cause your heart rate or pressure to rise.

I would lock myself in the beroom away from people and just make myself watch boring TV and then sleep as often as possible.

weening down is good, but ultimatly once you get to where you are smoking only three or less a day then just chuck it all together.

( a little tip) when cutting back make sure to not inhale as deep, and only smoke a half or a quarter of the cigs ( you get your body use to less nicotine ( the patches wont do this for you and ultimatly you will have to detox to beat it as the nicotine is the addiciting part)

by allowing yourself half a cig at a time then butt it , throw that particular cig away ( as it will have more nicotine in the second half , folow me?) but yet only count it as a half of smoke, so when you limit yourself to say 5 a day, you actuially get ten times to smoke ( 10 halfs equal five) but yet your nicotine intake will drop dramatically, and allow your body to detox a little at a time .

good luck .... if you seriously have any questions feel free to hit me on icq, i will help you in any way I can. :okthumb:

Good luck to you Nick, and keep yourself busy whatever you do. Out of sight out of mind, just dump the ashtrays and get rid of all your stashes, its fucking up your life and your families. It stinks on your skin, your clothes, everywhere.

1500 a month? man thats a new set of golf clubs each month or vacations/treats for you and the family or 1500 packets of walkers chicken flavour crisps a month ;)..

You can do it just watch the mood swings ;)

Nick I have quit for a month or more two-three times the last 8 years. The bitch of it is every time I will start back up having "Just one Cigarette" when I am out for some drinks with a friend.

If you quit, don't ever light up again - It really does just take one time.

The last time I quit, was for 2 1/2 months about 5 years ago. One night I was drinking (New Years Eve of all nights) and bought a pack of smokes to enjoy and celebrate what had been a great year. When i woke up the next morning without even realizing it, I reached to the back of my bed, grabbed a smoke, and lit it up the second I woke up.

I have been a smoker since. They weren't kidding when they said smoking is more addictive than heroin. I wouldn't quit say it was a cake walk compared to quitting coke - and it sound slike you had a habit as bad/if not worse than me... But once I quit coke the desire to do it again subsided over time and I was able to do it once without starting back up.

Smoking, this is NOT the case... But a month after you quit you feel like a new person - more energy, less phlegm every morning when you wake up, and you feel overall better as a person :)

GL Mate, you have a tough road ahead of you. By the way, The things that worked best for me was

1) Wellbutrin as prescribed by the doctor
2) 21 mg nicottine patches
3) For the first week nicottine gum as well
4) Lots of excercise
5) Making it clear to EVERYONE in my life NOT to fuck with me :)

I've set my quit date for this Saturday, can't let the couple packs I have go to waste by throwing them out :)

I came across this site http://www.whyquit.com (http://www.whyquit.com/) has lots of good information there for quitting.

And as Peaches said about the pestering kids, my oldest is always hounding me to quit. Guess it finally sunk in!

Quitting smoking is easy

I've done it thousands of times
:P

I quit every night when I go to bed
Also happen to start again everry morning when I wake up

Know that I do have to quit sometime soon as I don't want my son getting the habit
He's already asked me if I smoke (Really put forth the effort to not smoke in front of him, he's 3.5 and seen me with a cigarette maybe 3 times) and I told him every now and then

I think that's where I keep getting stuck when I've tried in the past.

I warn people, be patient, give me slack, I'm going to be pissy. I may even jump down your throat. So either stay the fuck away or deal with it, quietly.

What would inevitably happen would be a few big rows, stress level rises fast, end up grabbing a cigarette during first three days. End of quitting.

Good luck with it. I hope you can stick it out. Smoking has never bothered me and I have zero health problems after being around two parents who smoked, and still do, while I was growing up. Mom smokes a couple packs of cigarettes a day Salem menthols the nasty shit that crystalizes the lungs. My dad is a pipe smoker and they are a rare breed nowadays. I smoked a pipe when I was in the USMC and my first couple years of college when I studied. Haven't smoked in years though. I used to chew tobaco when I was in jr. high and high school. I used to go through 9 tins of Coppenhagen and 2-3 pouches of Red Man a week for about three and a half years. Used to sit in class with a wad from cheek to cheek and swallow so I wouldn;t get caught and get suspended from sports. :) Quit both cold turkey though.

Good Luck !

Sunday will be the start of week 4 for me ! I recommend drinking lots of water and substituting something like pretzels - it has been helping me a lot ! A friend also got me into making flavored toothpicks (cinnamon, peppermint, etc.) and having those around has helped A LOT !

In the past I had tried weaning off, the patch, the lozenges, the gum - - nothing ever worked. This time was just cold turkey. I woke up one morn and did not want to smoke, so I did not and have not. I was a pretty heavy smoker - so people are amazed. Heck, I am amazed - hehehehe

I can't say it gets better every day. For some reason, I had more of a problem week three than I did week one. But I just don't pick one up - no matter what - I know that would be the end of it for me....they are just so damned addictive !

Do whatever ya have to - get off the things - it is amazing how much better you feel in just a short amount of time (even after smoking heavy for 20+ years) ! And GOOOOOOD LUCK ! : )

Good luck nick, 4 packs a day is alot to smoke!

Obviously I haven't smoked as long as any of you guys have, I smoked about 30 a day for 3-4 years, then stopped for about a year cold turkey. I just smoke when I go to bars.

Those little suckers pediatricians give away are good to kick around in your mouth, people think "this guy is cool, he's eating a sucker in public and doesn't give a fuck if it's childish".

The plus side, besides not dying, is sex is WAYYYY better when you don't have all that nicotine in you. Your blood will flow alot better and you'll have alot more feeling. Unless you take viagra, you've been wasting away alot of good years of sex by smoking!

I tried to quit a couple of weeks ago after I went to the doctor about a nagging little bronchitis that got totally out of control when it stopped raining for a bit and the fucking flowers spewed pollen like never before. Had an allergy induced asthma attack and woke up gasping for breath.

I'm doing everything I can to cut back, but after about a day and a half of trying to quit cold turkey, I was definitely having those psychopathic thoughts that Newton mentioned.

I will probably be the fattest bitch in prison within a month of quitting.

I've been reading this thread in agony. I so want to stop, but like Trev, I'm a marshmellow. :(

Reading about how addictive it is (worse than herion, worse than coke) just hasn't made this thread an easy read. LOL.

Good to see Alyssa's post though, that helps. And hell if I'll let Nick be able to do it and I can't. That right there is a challenge. :)

I keep promising myself I'm gonna quit soon. But then I've been saying that for a year. Maybe I'll give a try in a few weeks, when the weather is nicer and I'm sitting in front of the computer less and outside enjoying Spring.

Great advice and congrats alyssa :)

Steve , nicked a hellacool lollipop off my littliest daughter. LOL Works good but the real fun is in the thieving of it (it lights up btw) and the taunty dancing by a 44 yr old at his nearly 7 yr old daughter whilst she explains she has more and would have given it to me anyway ;-)))

Thks for the support though....still doing it ...keeping busy and not always on computers.

Removing asstrays from view is critical.

and did I say keep busy?

The zyban doesn't seem to work , but then saying that I'm quite calm , and don't wish to harm anyone which actually is unusual..maybe they are working...

The gum is GREAT!!!! But fuck that chew chew tuck under yr lip bs...chew it just like gum.

The nicorette thing works good ..but not recommended in public as it looks like a little one hitter weed smoker.

The house already smells better , the wife is happy , and my eldest daughter is really really happy and encouraging me all she can.

Ok...I'm off , call me if ya need me.

Gotta stay busy...gonna cook stirfry...

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA

it worked for my sister though ..... most people get opposite reaction to you though nick, anxiety etc ...

i haven't actually tried to quit smoking yet, because I know I am not ready for it. but the last few months I keep forgetting to buy a packet and going a week at a time and not even thinking about it. A packet lasts me at least a week now, current pack i've had for 3 weeks. Mostly I just need to know I *can* have one, but don't bother. So one day soon I will just call myself a non smoker ;-)

The best step I took towards quitting was to ban smoking inside the house and move all ashtrays outside ....... went from a pack a day to 5 cigs a day immediately.

My father quit all the time because he knew he *should* and was never able to kick the habit. Then one day he *decided* that he was done smoking and quit cold turkey. That was the last time he ever smoked...

When you want to quit, you will. If you don't want to quit, you won't. Period...

Um, I haven't *decided* to quit yet myself, so I'll get off the soapbox.

I quit January 7th. The first two weeks are tough man. I am really succeptible to nic fits.

I used the gum.

One thing however that I did differently this time at the advice of a friend, which seemed to be very effective, was not worry about the side-effects involved with quitting. In the past, I stressed over my increased appetite. A friend told me, "man, just eat, gorge yourself, at the end of the day, you will thank yourself. Make the goal quitting smoking."

It helped man. I just focused on quitting.

I got Pnemonia shortly after quitting and it lingered. I just went to the doctor for my final chest xray. He told me I have developed adult asthma. My days of non-smoking are behind me now.

Interesting Voo.

When we were kids my mom used to try and quit, and back then if you were able to pay for a carton of cigs they would sell them to you. My brother and I were known for heading to the store and getting a carton, spreading packs around the house in obvious places, so the crazy woman would go away and our mom would come back ;)

But a few years ago my mom quit. 41 years of smoking, alot of them Pall Mall non filters. Cold turkey. No patch, no gum, no nothing.

She lost weight too.

Her new addiction became walking around the track at the local high school. I think she's up to 5 miles a day or something now that she's retired.

Whatever works is because you want it to work, not because you have to do it.

Hell, I hate pouring things out sometimes that seem personal. But maybe in doing so it will help get me towards quitting.

I hate hearing myself wheezing at night before I go to sleep.

I hate climbing two sets of stairs and having to catch my breath and feeling like I've got a 90 year old man inside this allegedly 44 year old body.

As time goes on, I notice more and more how much the ashtrays stink, or if I leave the room briefly and come back in, the thin wisps of grey in the air.

It's just that somehow, somewhere, this other person (like the cartoon with the little angel on the one shoulder and the little devil on the other) seems to actually like smoking -- damn it!! Especially in the mornings and after a meal.

Ok, I feel better admitting that openly. :)

To those recently quit, quitting or have quit, my many congrats! :rokk:

My Grandmother right after congestive heart failure - after 50 yers

Relinquishing junk. Stage One: preparation. For this you will need: one room which you will not leave; one mattress; tomato soup, ten tins of; mushroom soup, eight tins of, for consumption cold; ice cream, vanilla, one large tub of; Magnesia, Milk of, one bottle; paracetamol; mouth wash; vitamins; mineral water; Lucozade; pornography; one bucket for urine, one for feces, and one for vomitus; one television; and one bottle of Valium, which I have already procured, from my mother, who is, in her own domestic and socially acceptable way, also a drug addict. you know what it does to your body - so just quit or keep smoking...

emphesima, lung cancer and throat cancer, etc.

why not just cold turkey it and quit - its that easy!!!

Hey the Fucking Duke lost a lung to cancer and kept on going

Little closer to home and a true story
My uncle passed away last year from cancer (it was smoking related) hit his brain and spread through is body
I went to his death bed, he told me he wasn't scared to die, he lived a very good life and left my Aunt well off. I sat at his death bed and we talked and I toasted him with Jim Beam (he was the man who taught me to appreciate Jim Beam)
He was an amazing man, larger than life it's self and he wouldn't have wanted it any other way

He didn't linger, the Doctor gave him 6 months, he passed away after 2

He left me his gold watch from his railroad days (he ended his career as a senior vice president after spending his entire career - 30 some years with the railroad)
It's one of my most treasured possessions. I'm one of the very few people in this world with a gold CSX watch

Yeah I miss him, the great stories we shared (he saw Frank Sinatra preform live when he was only 8) but most of all he always has my admiration, love and respect

So for those of you quitting, good luck and I wish you success

For those of us who at this time choose to keep smoking, well that's our choice

Vick :wnw:
sharing a glass of jim together and saying a proper good bye sounds like it has left you with a very positive feeling about his passing ... that is precious

while we all know the risks of what we do, not smoking is not a guarantee to a healthy, happy life! i'm sure we've each known people who have died too young, for no apparent reason, who were extremely healthy.

I just hope if I get a smoking related illness, I don't linger around and end up talking out of a tube or breathing with a machine!! :(

fucking filthy habit

Just after I left school...

The brother of a school friend of mine was working construction in the city, when his older brother paid him a visit at work. Peter stopped for a chat to his brother and to have a smoke. The brother told him he should quit, it was bad for him, blah blah.

Peter responded with 'I'm here for a good time, not for a long time.'

The next day, he fell from a girder, and died.

I dont smoke and never have and I am just stating the obvious. It wasnt a fact or meant to be funny...

you know what it does to your body - so just quit or keep smoking...

emphesima, lung cancer and throat cancer, etc.

babe ruth did it and he ended up dying young - so the end of all ends is to either quit or keep smoking - cutting down doesnt help because your still putting that shit into your body...

why not just cold turkey it and quit - its that easy!!!

Nick, can we ban him.. Can We Can We Can We??

Invasion, :moon:

Sure just wake up and quit cold turkey.. that's alll there is to it ... It isn't tough. If you are poinmting out facts everyone knows why not point out quitting smoking has been proven to be more difficult than kicking heroin, THE MOST ADDICTIVE ILLEGAL street drug - period.

And you have never smoked how would you know how easy it is?

Don't mind opinions of others, but they should have some first hand experience - You don't... And you seem like a troll to me. Nothing better to do with your time? Go pass out "Quit Smoking" fliers - yu can tag along with the Jehovah's Witnesses when they go knocking door to door!

Still doing it and its not too tough really.

Lots of things I've read say you should quit cold turkey , but a friend who is a doctor and noticed my lack of cig in my hand said they are full of shit...

What works is whatever you do to stop smoking and reducing down and sustaining is a great way to start to become smoke free.

A person who can go 72 hours without a cig or thinking of a cig should stop now , you are not physically addicted , don't get addicted.

Quitting cold turkey works for many. However few that have smoke above 60 a day can do it , the craving is too strong. If you manage to reduce to 10 cigs a day , do it. It is easier to go from 10 cigs a day cold turkey than 80.

so far I've given up..
booze...totally not a drop.
Cocaine....not a dusting lol
loose women..lol
and am sure I will beat cigs ..

Thank fuck for poker!!!

Seriously fuck comibng off coke , its a cake walk compared to quitting smoking.
i quit the day jackie told me she was pregnent.

now if only i could get off the crack.....

That was 27 months ago now. I made a decision, and never went back. I had smoked a pack/2 packs a day for 15 years. Once i made the decision i didn't have another cig, and haven't since.

Well, you can drink 8 glasses of water a day like they suggest, but everyone that's ever drank the water died too.

I'm just trying to cut back by half and it's making me into a bitch.

Totally destroying my sweet, guileless, helpful personality.

So you're saying it's because of you only drinking 4 glasses of water a day that you feel like it's : "Totally destroying my sweet, guileless, helpful personality."
