View Full Version : Phobias - Have any?

My major one is of course flying.

Now this is a weird one.

I have been flying round the world since I was 4.All over Africa and Europe.

In my 20s I commuted from an Island back and forth to London (about an hour flight) 10 flights a week often.

I didn't enjoy it but didn't really mind it.

Then as I got the ability of A.) to afford to travel as I wish and B.) the freedom to set my own schedule.

hmmm and I just realised this sorta came around the time I got married and had kids..I'll speak to my shrink about this... ;-)

so here is how it developed....

I have to go from London to New York (Or I want to go to my house in Florida LOL)

How to get there....

1.) QE2 still does lots of Transatlantics...so I have done it that way , maybe a dozen times in all.
2.) Concorde (they are never going to let that crash was my reasoning...I was in the Bahamas when the Paris tradegy happened..FUCKED that theory)and now the plane is decommissioned.Best way to go transatlantic in a hurry too :( QE2 is the best if you have the few days it takes.

I did fly to Florida 4 yrs ago aqnd to Vegas too. But when I flew there I chickened out and drove back LOL Both times.

I have driven Vancouver Orlando return 8 times and twice back and forth to California.

I have also taken a train from Vancouver to LA and between NY and orland 4 times.

OK...I'm crazy....but I do love driving,trains,and boats.

So who else is eccentric ?

My irrational fear is growing older

and I can't combat it - growing older or the fear

beyond that on a personal level I've dealt with some anxiety and a few years back depression
(huge admission for me as I never went public with it)

I think the stigma attached to anxiety or depression is ASS.

I read somewhere 40% of the pop will suffer from it at some time.

Its about time these things were dropped.

Claustrophopia and pitch black dark. Probably connected to each other. I have a nightlight in almost every room in my house. I'm OK as long as I have just one source of light though, even a small one - I don't need everything lit up like a Christmas tree.

I can't STAND to have my face covered up either. Again, probably connected to the claustrophobia.

Actually it was part stigma and with no insult intended to anyone I didn't feel the need to make a public announcement about it

I've never been big on bringing the larger real life problems to on line communities
To me it doesn't sit well or reflect well

Think about it
Here I am owning an affiliate program, involved in other things and a few years back went through fairly serious depression

How would that reflect on the stability of my business?

Today it doesn't matter as I've faced the challenges and am better equipped to deal with most anything

My Dad cured my fear of the dark as a kid with logic.

"In the dark you have an advantage. Look.go open the drawer in yr desk.See you can in the dark. Its your house.Yolu kn ow the lie of the land."

Even now , If I hear a noise in the house downstairs , I switch off all the lights as I go to investigate. LOL

Now I know what to do to get you back if you have sharks in your pond when I come to visit you!! :)

Vick, as I've stated before my Dr. had me try Prozac as a preventative for migraines. The 10 mgs (I think that was the dosage - it was the smallest you can get, whatever that is) didn't affect me at all so per his instructions, I doubled it.

I went into a clinical depression that even thinking back on it freaks me out. Of course, I knew what caused it and within 24 hours of stopping the medication I was fine, but I gained a VERY healthy respect for people who have clinical depression and can function in any way, shape or form. It truly was debilitating for me. Props to you for dealing with it and talking about it! :okthumb:

Yeah, I know it's not RATIONAL to be afraid of the dark, but phobias are by defintion, irrational fears :awinky:

Well lets be frank here.

I've been self medicating for years. :)

Vick
03-20-2005, 12:27 PM
Thanks Peaches

and yes there was a good deal of self medicating beyond what the Dr. gave

The Dr.'s explanation about self medicating was that I would naturally gravitate toward what I felt helped me or at least elevated the problems (temporarily)

One thing I've noticed is that most people don't come back from serious depression as the same person they were prior
It took a while but I feel I came back stronger/better

Ya know at the end of the day , its all about "feelings"

Finding out why you feel that way , understanding those feelings, coming to terms with those feelings, works far better IMHO than drugs.

So just lie down on the couch...

;-)))

(and yes , I cover things I feel strongly about with humour )

phobia of mayonnaise.

I was a very very picky eater as a child, now I'll try anything exotic.....but mayonnaise I still can't stand to even look at. vile greasy slop. my girlfriend doesnt even eat mayo on sandwiches often because she knows it grosses me out.

the only thing that worries me about flying is that maybe the pilot is depressed and will try to take down the plane. other than that....not much you can do because you're not flying the plane and if we die the pilots die too...so as long as they have the will to live, no worries about plane rides. going to take some lessons this summer so I can fly with my daddy. :)

Well done Vick for making it back, it must have been the biggest battle you’ve ever won :okthumb: my mother was a manic depressive for about 6 years and it was so tough to live with as I was only 14. As you say some people don't come back anything like they were before :(

My 'thing' is that I hate people standing behind me or just off my shoulder, it really puts me on edge and progresses into a bad thing as I get more stressed. I like to have my back to the wall and everyone in front of me.

I'm not sure if it's a phobia but I've really freaked out a few times due to it.

I'm pretty freaked out by huntsman spiders.
Once I sat on my bed for an hour and was late for school because there was one blocking my doorway and I couldn't move to step over it.

The dentist.

Complete, all encompassing, irrational fear of the dentist.

So much so that for the ultrasonic cleaning, and 2 small filling repairs I need...I'm going to have to go under a GA.

So to the butcher that repaired my front teeth after my cousin threw a rock at me when I was 9, I say, FUCK YOU!

same as Vick...growing older
most people know of my driving phobia as well...I almost never drive. I haven't had a license in years and other than the odd highway driving down to our property in Kingman, I've never driven in the city of Las Vegas and have seldomly ever driven in any city other than where I grew up.

I'm not even a good passenger sometimes, I'm constantly stomping on an imaginary foot pedal on the passenger side floor.

The phobia stems from the car wreck I had 17 years ago that killed my passenger...

Crazy some of the things people are afraid of...

Barophobia- Fear of gravity
Ballistophobia- Fear of missiles or bullets (duh)
Asymmetriphobia - Fear of asymmetrical things

I guess mine would be Anthropophobia - Fear of people or society.

I really cant stand being around people, even though I spent half my life performing in jazz bands and was even a front man for a garage band for 3 years playing to 200 - 300 people 3 days a week. Even working the booths at shows bothers me, but do it anyways.

I guess it's more of a social anxiety thing rather then an actual fear of people.

My main one has always been fear of failing.

Been able to beat it alot over the years. I used to not do things because then I wouldn't have to admit I'd fail. Looking back, it's been one Hell of a ride, but somehow I manage to hold on.

Must be an Aussie Girl thing but I too have a spider & dentist phobia.
The only good spider is a 2 dimensional spider...come to think of it - the same could be said about dentists....(something to ponder)

I am that paranoid about spiders I need to see the body ( presumabily after someone else has heard my hysterics and come to my rescue ) in its squished state to ensure it is infact dead and not just scuttled away to hide to scare the willies out of me latter...( I'm not sure what it is about those hairy, eight leggered, buggers that can cover vast distances in seconds running sideways, that makes me uncomfortable but something does )

Vick there was a thread a while back where a lot of people opened up about their past depression and anxiety... along with some other mental disorders. Might do you some good to dig it up and read over it - As more time goes by it is becoming more acceptable socially to have depression or anxiety. I seriously think half the people I know in real life have been on some sort of meds at some point of time in their life. Including myself...

I started reading this thread thinking "I don't have any phobias" than I saw Lisa's post and shuddered - You can take 10 vials of blood from me for blood test, give me a shot, tell me how you are going to pop my shoulder back into it's socket, give me stitches (where i had to have literally 40 + shots prior to being stitched up) and it won't bother me a bit.

But the dentist office - I would rather do ANYTHING else....

Dentisphobia, wonder if there is a word for it lol !
