Monty Python shifts antics to the stage

The Monty Python team has made the transition from screen to stage, with the opening of Monty Python's Spamalot to almost universal guffaws and applause in New York.

While the New York Times dubbed the show "resplendently silly", many critics noted its warm reception owed much to the audience's affection for the 30-year-old film on which it is based, Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

"It's an evening of rapturous insanity - featuring killer rabbits, hurled cows, outed knights, dancing corpses, horseless horsemen, God, Coconut shells and holy grails," Daily News movie critic Jack Mathews wrote.

But he also said about 90 percent of the pleasure of the show was in the anticipation.

The New York Times agreed: "The uninitiated may be bewildered when laughs arrive even before a scene gets under way."

I read a review that raved about their new stage production, but also said 'their jokes are 30 years old, and feel 30 years old'

who cares, they are still funny! I watched the holy grail again the other day for the 'god knows how many'-th time, and it STILL cracks me up.

Anyone recall watching Justin Wilson years ago doing his cooking show?

What a thick Cajun accent! Took me a while to figure out, even with visuals, that "Today weez gonna do ties and wins on da shaken" meant ...

... "chicken thighs and wings".

And I still never figured out the rest of what he said. :)

I absolutely LOVE Monty Python! Find it absolutlely hilarious. The Brits have a great sense of humor. I particularly love John Cleese. Fawlty Towers is the best comedy EVER on TV in my not so humble opinion.

Fawly Towers is definitely the best comedy series ever.

Every episode is still hilarious and , no lie, I must have watched each 50 times maybe more.

Monty Python , the TV series was good in parts , but the movies were incredible. :)

My favorite is still "The Meaning of Life" as I saw that as a kid. saw that with my parents when I was 13 years old on vaction in Michigan sailing. My mom went to get popcorn and came back right in the middle of the sex education scene and started laughing so loud everyone in the theater looked back at her as she was walking back in to sit down. We still talk about that and the fat man eating scene as well.

Eric Idle was on The Daily Show not that long ago promoting the play.

It sounded like it would be absolutely hysterical.

Always liked Monty Python... the other British series I liked, was the short
lived series "The Young Ones" which was part of MTVs lineup in the 80s...

B)

Of course, watching Benny Hill, exclusively for the Hills Angels doesn't count... :P

Yep gotta agree with you on the Young Ones.

Rik Mayal and Adrian Edmonson had some fucking funny shows, 'Bottom' is another of my favorites with Rik Mayal.
