View Full Version : Parents would you...

After recent events on the news about child abduction that I've recently watched I'd like to know how many parents or parents to be one day would have their children electronically chipped?

The technology is already being used in dogs and cats but it's unsure if it'll ever be carried over to children, do you think it should?

I for one would have my son Dan chipped in a heartbeat just so that if he ever did go missing someone could locate him within 5 minutes... Then I'd kick his little hairy ass for going off!

Am I alone in worrying about stuff like this

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the chip just identify who they are with a reader like they use on dogs now? IOW, I don't see how one would help you find a kid. If the kid's there, you can pretty easily identify that s/he's yours. If the kid's NOT there, having the chip isn't going to do squat.

Or am I misunderstanding what the chip does?

if I had kids and these chips had gps tracking, sure!

so i could find em when they are 5, and so i can crash their friends parties when they're teenagers.

Theres a chip about to go into vets here in the UK that is gps enabled (some crufts dogs will be fitted straight away) it also comes with a nice price tag as well and is said to last between 10 and 14 years...

This technology went under discusion a while back in the house of Lords with children in mind but nothing became of it as far as I'm aware...

Ah, OK, well that kind would make sense and yes, I'd do it. :okthumb:

Hell, I'd probably get one put in for when I get lost so people can come and find me!

Peaches I already had you down as the eternal good parent and knew you would go with this kind of thing :)

But Push dude you surprise me and in a good way :okthumb: (oh and I like the when he's a teenager thing)

I don't have kids but I'm gonna offer my opinion anyways. No, I would not "chip" my kid. There are dangers abound in this world but I'm not gonna "big brother" my kid to protect him from it.

I didn't vote :(

You don't have enough choices... I would not get them chipped, don't have to. The shock collars work great (and a lot cheaper)

If the shock collars go out..... Duct tape :okthumb:

I was going to make the same comment you did Peaches, since both of my dogs are chipped and I can't tell where the damn mutt is when he does a Copperfield on the gate and gets out ;)

I probably would...

I'm all for trying to give my kids the same sort of freedoms we had when we were kids...the freedom to go out all day roaming and exploring with the rule 'make sure you come home when the street lights come on'.

Mobile phones help with that to a certain extent...I know the kids can contact me if they're in trouble, and I can also give them a call if they're either away too long or I just get one of those funny feelings.

I would see it as a freedom enhancer tho...not as a leash. I'm not interested in knowing what they're up to every second of every day, but if chipping would allow them to be located IF something did go wrong, then I'm all for it.

CeeJ can tell you what my kids are like, very self sufficient, and independent...and they don't get that way being mollycoddled to death.

Perhaps a new poll - would you spy on your kids with a GPS chip? is in order ;)

You are certainly not alone in worrying about your kids ... I raised three daughters in an urban environment that got pretty scary at times. Hell's bells, my "baby" turned 26 this year and I STILL worry about them. Why, they could bring home a Grogan or something. :D

Still, there is something downright Orwellian about implanting a tracking device in them that I just can't get around. I know that bad shit happens today - but if you watch and read the news carefully and thoroughly, you'll see that the biggest dangers to most children face come from where they've always come from - right there at home. That fact doesn't sell much soap, ketchup, or sanitary pads - but it's true.

I really didn't put enough choices and I could'nt have been very clear either. Just like the animal chip it isn't possible for the owner to track the aminal, you have to contact a tracking service for that.

Just like when your car gets stolen and you have it chipped you ring the police report it and tell them it's chipped and they contact Tracker Ltd.

I wouldn't have Dan chipped to take away any of his freedoms, I would however to keep peace of mind that if the worst ever did happen I know I'd at least find him.

As Lisa said I remember going off exploring when I was a child and sometimes I'd end up miles away from home but back then I was safer than the kids playing at the end of their own street these days. Who's to say that even if I gave Dan a mobile phone when he's old enough that he'd get the chance to use it....

PornoDoggy I've landed lucky I guess or have I... because my kid can only grow up to be a grogan... If he ever brought a grogan home that would be the start of a whole new worry  and I know your right about the risks in the home, I mean we're already going throught 3 bottles of bleach more than we used to a week... I'm sure the little shit is drinking it

PD...I wholeheartedly agree.

If I were to chip my kids, I'd actually be in favour of ME not being able to track them personally...maybe only the authorities could have that ability to use in emergency situations.

Yeah, right, guys ... this old hippy's gonna believe that the government would never use that data for anything it shouldn't?

I mean, come on ... when Ashcroft gets elected President and appoints Ted Stevens as the first Director of National Morality, and Jerry Falwell as Undersecretary for Christian Righs - what happens if Junior don't go to church one Sunday?

Well the chips lifespan is only 10 - 14 years, so I can't see 'big brother' gathering to much information on children... unless knowing if they've ever been to Disney is important :)

Damn, if I could have had one in CT's car, I would have loved it - screw not being "Big Brother" - if I'm supporting your ass, especially when I carried you for 9 months, 48 hours of labor and saggy boobs from breastfeeding, I have every right to know where you are. Don't like it? There's the door. :okthumb:

He must not have felt I was too strict - I couldn't get him out of the house! :P
