I ask this in all seriousness in light of upcoming sites that I will shortly announce an involvement in...

So you have a budget of 50k for advertising initially....

I'm temptred to just go and buy a shitload of traffic from google etc etc...

Wouldn't that be smart , or is it not workable?

Only problem I would see is that it would immediately die down once your clicks have run out...

If you use it to market to actual webmasters, it might be slower, but could last longer...

Its like the old PPS/revshare debate ;)

Yeah but what I mean is..say..

So you buy 20k worth of traffic mth one from google. It gets you 15k mth 1 , (with the recurs to look forward too)

Why then in a way bother with affiliates?

As Peaches said 90% of there affiliates are SE people.

So the chances are they are in effect paying a middle man (the affiliate)

Doesn't it make sense just to go to google , treat google as a whale and prepay google 50k for traffic effectively?

I think the mis-conception that you have is that SE whales use paid rankings...

No I don't think that.

But a lot can be replaced by paid ranking.

What I'm saying is in effect , return on money spent.

ie pay affiliates X for free se traffic and deal with that , or pay google fopr paid...or both

I say anything that turns a profit is worthwhile.... (including your time in the expenses)

Buying google traffic involves lot's of testing, coming up with ads that pull clicks then converting those clicks. So you're playing both the SE game and the program operator game. Or you can let the affiliate worry about pulling the clicks and just focus on converting those clicks.

An affiliate can lose 5 grand and make the program owner 10 grand.

See your words to me circa 1997 are ringing in my ear...

"Nick , traffic , thats the key.If you have traffic someone will always be willing to pay you for it."

Plus also...

"A man has to know his limitations"

"Whenever everyone is selling , buy...when they are buying , sell"

i have always uses PPCs to find a new site to promote or an unknown affiliate programs. Others do as well.

Nick, treat this as an added bonus to bring in the whales.

this applies to both adult and non-adult.

targeted adwords do not do as well (Atleast for me in adult) as topspots, so you could take that same 50k and devote it to a massive SE campain to take over thousands of small keywords making a massive network that would supply you with sales for much longer time.

Google adwords is not for the faint of heart....

Biggest problem out there right now is it is infested with idiots who overpay and bid up the words.

It's like going to an auction where everyone else there has deep pockets and no clue what anything is REALLY worth.

I enjoy all these SE threads. They are amusing.
