Had to share... we all need this reminder every now and again just how lucky we are to do what we do and enjoy all the benefits of working in this industry...

One morning a few weeks ago, I was heading out to meet some friends and business associates for a breakfast meeting. I pulled on a pair of jeans and grabbed a T-shirt from the pile of clean washing on the floor beside my bed. I ran a brush through my hair, pulled it back in a clip, put on a pair of joggers, sprayed some deodorant and left the house.

It was the first week of spring here in Australia, and the weather was magical - perfect blue skies, about 80 degrees with a light breeze blowing, so I decided to walk so I could take my time and enjoy the day.

CJ talks about LOVE on Valentine's Day @ Klixxx.com..... (http://www.klixxx.com/archive/lovemyjob.shtml)

Happy Valentines day, CJ. That is very nice. A lot nicer than the miserable rainy day it's been here. I guess I'll just have to celebrate in bed. (so maybe it's not so bad)

I can venture a guess

The go fuckyourself @ mikes place was toy boy the purve.com shirt was most likely the Lovely Lisa ( toy boys girlfriend) and I am at a loss to the 420 calendar shirt wearer ... But i would guess nickdark, or Opti ????

Love the article, CJ!

Every so often we need those reminders. They come to me at odd times. Sometimes it's going shopping. A friend says, hey I'm need to hit XYZ this weekend, want to come? I say why? Weekends are when the normal people go and it's 10X busier then going during the weekday when the 9-to-5ers are all gone. Let's wait until then. And I think about how cool that is.

Or, very much reminded in that article, every so often I have to leave residential NE Philly and head into busy Center City during the week. When that happens, I schedule it so I make it to town by 1:30 to miss the lunch crowd packing the pavements. And then get out of there by 4:30 so I'm ahead of the rush hour home by public transit and cars. And again, I think about how cool it is with this "job" that I can do that.

No tie nooses around the throat, starched collars, or uncomfortable dress oxfords ... no 7am wakeups and dashing for the train and pretending to be a sardine, or bleating the horn in traffic while sucking up exhaust fumes ... no going out when it's pouring rain (unless I'm out of smokes! lol!) to the same stress level, office politics, moronic managers and village idiots ... So sweet!!!

I was already using gopher when I started college. I was in the physics library and asked the librarian a question about how to get some materials. She told me to go to the new computer cluster and try "Mosaic". "What's Mosaic?", I asked. "It has pictures". "Oh, yeah?!"

Soon enough I found Justin Hall's infamous http://links.net/ though I think it was on a different domain at the time. In addition to his cooly connected autobiographical ramblings he had links to porn sites and an HTML primer.

I learned HTML and built a homepage called "Colin's World". From there I built a (non-porn) link reviews site and other autobiographical stuff which won awards from Excite and some other sites.

In college I was known as "the guy in the computer lab".

After college I knew I didn't want to go to school anymore. I also knew I wanted to make more money than I would in physics. I took a teaching position while I was applying for jobs because I love teaching and wanted to have that experience. At the same time I started a business submitting the webpages of small businesses to search engines.

I started the business out by spamming 10 million AOL email addresses. I got the email addresses from submitting first and last name combinations at AOLs "search members" page. When I mailed them I didn't know what I was doing and crashed the local ISPs servers. They gave me a call and sternly warned me to have them check over my scripts next time. That was it. A warning and ask for their help next time. Those were the days. I received less than 10 complaints.

Local ISPs were buildings an amazing number of webpages for every business out there hearing about the "information superhighway" for the first time and suddenly realizing they might be left out. I made deals with a number of local ISPs from those AOL emailings to offer our services to their customers for a cut.

The first two customers who contacted me were adult sites. One was dirtyonline.com. I made a deal with one of them that I would drive traffic to his sites for 50% of the sales. He gave me access to his stats and everything. I saw all his traffic stats. It was really easy getting him more traffic. I would find the biggest paysites I could and offer to exchange banners and they would. Most of them didn't have any stats and couldn't evaluate their trades. All they knew was to "trade banners". I put together some really lopsided trades.

I eventually received a job offer from Dean Witter. I turned it down though because I realized I was going to make much more with the search engine submissions and in adult.
