The fact that SMS (Short Message Service) was almost added as an afterthought when the GSM cellphone standard was first conceived, makes the phenomenal popularity it enjoys all the more remarkable.

More than a staggering 20 billion SMS are sent each month, and it’s still growing.
GSM (Global Standard for Mobile communications) is the standard used by 80% by the world’s cellphone users.

It was not adopted by the USA , resulting in the following situation. Europe : Many different countries, one standard. USA : One country, several standards. This is why SMS, otherwise known as text messaging, never took off in the States.

In the early days, the GSM cellphone operators even had a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ to terminate each other’s SMS at no charge. Hence the abundance back then of free web-based SMS Services. Now data traffic accounts for an increasing proportion of the network operator’s revenues.

It’s popularity can be attributed to the fact that it’s direct and immediate. No waiting for hours while you wait for someone to return your voice message.
Furthermore, it’s discreet - unlike loudly talking into your handset in public. It’s generally cheaper than a long phone call.

The ‘product’ itself is spectacularly unspectacular. Only up to 160 characters of text. Unless, that is, it is used to carry small amounts of data – hence the popularity of the hugely successful ringtone smd logo cellphone tuning market. Part of this can be attributed to the ease of puchase. The customers pays via their phone bill (ie on credit), and product delivery is immediate. A neat billing/delivery cycle – all with no chargebacks!

The good news is, you can now capitalise on SMS’s popularity by using it as a billing mechanism for surfers to gain access to your website(s). This way, the cheap tour takers who never converted before will actually become paying customers. And they will love you for it – no more messy credit details (if they have one) – and, above all, their anonymity is maintained.

This way you could offer, for example, 24hrs access to your member’s area for €4 – a good solid currency nowadays! If they like what they see, they can sign up with your current credit card processors in the normal way.

This is achieved via the Premium SMS (PSMS) billing mechanism. This can be compared to a 1-900 number. The end-user ‘texts’ his or her order reference number to a five digit shortcode, which is charged at a premium. They immediately receive an SMS back containing the new reference number needed to ‘unlock’ your members area. You remain in full control, and dictate both the price points and the length of access that the customer will become.

Emjay how many times do you need to be asked not to place thinly disguise spam, and post it on here. You know full well you will try to follow up this thread, with another driveby spam, later on.

You post on every single board the same drivel and its boring, If you wish to make posts, then please try to contribute more to a board than this kind of shit.

Let the people get to know you, so they can make an informed business decision, change your tack.

Cheers man ;) Appreciate the kind words, I am in no way a guru on this but I am learning as we all are, this is the future and I am personally focussing my attentions now on the graphical / video side of things. If I can help in anyway at all, you know where I am, and it would be a pleasure.

Ok Newton, thanks for the tips :P

Yes, there are commercial interests - but I am encountering alot of ignorance concerning SMS from the USA, not least since it is not really known there.

So I was hoping that my posting(s) would both inform and stimulate debate.

;) SMS is in the US, they are just slightly behind Asia, Europe and Australia, but are slowly closing the gap. It could however be your approach on the boards, and not the business interests, that push you to the fore and threads more often than not ignored?

All boards are the same in that they want you to be part of the business and subsequent relationships that happen on the boards, part of the community, not just drop in lay the pipe down and leave.

It is nice to see that there is more to you in reading your blogs, and I look forward to seeing more appropriate threads from you and seeing you become part of Oprano, should you decide to stay.

Welcome to Oprano where the business opportunities are in abundance ;)

SMS is not going to work the same way in the states as it does in Europe, the carriers are not going to allow it any time soon. Too many audiotext scams have the phone companies scared to allow much of any premium billing add ons to people's service, and multiple carriers have come out against allowing adult content to be distributed on their networks.

It can be done, but you've got to think outside the box on this one.
