Also, can someone explain when they say "That is ranked as #2 in overture" etc. etc. etc - In other words when people are buying domains and all the things they look at can you guys please elaborate exactly what defines a valuable domain name.

For example, if I am looking at a comparison of the things that are important betwen porno.com and porn.com could you should me what the results are for each site and how you get these?

I know this is a hassle, but I am interested in learning more about this - Not that I have many domains worth much more, purely for the sale of learning :)

Bye Typo's I meant "Type In" hits but a combination of targetted "Typo" and "Type In" would be the same...

The domain names are worth what someone is willing to pay for them is the short answer.

There again I paid $15 for porncites.com/shylafoxx.com ;) so this could be a very interesting thread indeed, for anyone wishing to contribute as to the long answer on domain name worth/merits.

The only domain names that are worth money just for the sake of having the domain name itself are popular words that may be typed in, such as "golf", "wine" or "sex".

I think this value is even declining as more people use serach engines and don't type in names. When you look at the top search phrases on Wordtracker it's idiotic searches like "AOL", "Yahoo", MapQuest".

The general surfer is so fucking stupid that they go to Google and search on Yahoo to find it. Duh!

To answer your question about porn vs. porno, according to Wordtracker, in the last 60 days, porn is the winner by far.

porn 204,811 searches
porno 32,792 searches

- TLD (.com most recognised TLD world wide)
- Legal (possible trademarks in the same business area?)
- Lenght (short is good - surfers are lazy)
- Word(s) (is it meaningful)
- Branding (will surfers remember it)
- Typo Sensitive (will surfers misspell the domain or confuse it)
- Business (casino.com has better $ potential than vases.com)

I tend to choose domains on both the aesthetics of the name itself, not having two of the same letters next to each other in the domain is a big one for me, also the brandability (is that even a word? LOL) of the domain.

I also like two word combos for surfer orientated sites wherever possible :)

Other than that, traffic can come and go, just because a site gets 100k hits a day while a domain is being or has been owned by someone else, that doesnt guarantee the same 100k of hits will be there if we buy the domain.

They also have to be .com without any exceptions.

So given this, would a domain such as yourfantasy.com be worth anything? I hear pennies and I hear "That's a hell of a domain I just spent $4500 on a domain with smiliar value, let me get back to you" Of course never to hear back from them LOL ...

I see it as one that could be branded multiple ways, and have multiple uses - I am just NOT certain which use I would target it towards nor do I have the resources to do so. Hell I am just getting ready to tart submitting my first TGP's tonight LOL

Pretty sad when I can't even get an account at half these places without them reviewing a site I need their banners to make. Man this industry is WHACK nowadays, LOL

Heh, so you are the graphics guy Robert was talking so highly about - It is a small world... Yeah I bought that and a batch of other sites off of Robert (albeit paid too much lol) a couple years back.

Would of worked out pretty well for me if one of the sites I bought didn't slip through the renewal cracks (pussyeater.com) that went for $5,000.00 when it was tossed up for auction.

P.S. Still have that design on my Hard Drive ;)

I was actually thinking of using Captainsex.com for that purpose. Figured I could use a comic image of a 'porn captain' wearng a uniform etc. Soudns corny, but alot of the higher trafficked sites over the years have had such themes.

Makes the surfer remember the sites :

"What was that one fucking site I was at last night, hmmmm.. Oh shit Yeah that's right Captainsex.com cause that goofy ass cartoon character"

That type of deal :D
