View Full Version : Do "webmasters" backdate when they started?

What's with all the webmasters who claim to have started in '96 or '97 that I've never heard of? I guess it's possible. Maybe a lot of people just finding the boards for the first time?

I believe it is some of each. Some where just not known until more recently, some are full of shit.

Sponsors are another good one for this, paying webmasters since 96 is on a hell of a lot more programs than were in existence.

August 97 for my start

I'll admit it...

...I was pouring concrete walls in '96 :P

Ha! Colin this is funny timing... I have 1997 on one of my pages that I was about to update.. and was just thinking to myself.. "hmmm is that really correct or was I just exagerating when I put that originally on page?"

First domain I bought was 1999.. but I played around as a part time hobby on freehosts for ages.. I started when c.o.n.d.o.m. very first appeared.. think slightly before Serge dragged the Ynot crowd over I think (anyone know that date?)

Anyway.. I have an excuse of having not cared about the event to recall the date that baldbastard finally convinced me to look at adult as a way to internet riches (I was all keyed up to make websites for small companies at the time.. thank r-n he saved me!)

BUT.. you are dead right about 1997 being a popular date... I saw some tossers who write articles for a webmaster newsletter claim they had started in 97 recently... people who I first met through them asking how to get started in about 2001 :matey:

Will the rest of the Class of '97 stand up and be counted :rokk: (if you dare) LOL

This was the oldest I could find:

Subject: IMPORTANT INFORMATION - Welcome to XCash Advertising
From: xcash-support@xpics.com
Date: Sat, 15 Nov 1997 08:03:33

I started earlier though. I think my first sponsor was via PennyWeb(?).

But... the early days were cool.
Sponsors like Cyberthrill Casino were paying .25 flat per unique. Conversion didn't matter and shaving wasn't invented yet. Made tons with them for more than a year.

Suddenly they stopped paying everyone.

Didn't matter what you emailed, they placed this auto reply on their support mailbox:

Subject: Our Final Response
From: Cyber Thrill Casino <sponsor@cyberthrill.com>
Date: Fri, 18 Dec 1998 11:25:17

Our Final Response
------------------

If you have not received a check within two weeks of the date that
the check was sent on, please stop advertising for us.

We have a sophisticated tracking and fraud control system.
The traffic you sent us has been continuously monitored.
It did not meet the required pay back criteria for this program.
Your account has been banned automatically and you will not be
paid for your past hits. Our decision on this matter is final -
please do not send any more inquiries about previous checks.

We admit that we should have informed you of this decision in advance.
However, due to the large number of advertisers and the large volume
of fraudulent activity, it takes a few weeks to gather full statistics
on each account.

Finally, if you would like a more personal advertising support,
you may contact "Cash For Clicks" at www.cashforclicks.com,
an independent agency that does advertising for us.

Thank you,

around November of 2002 was my entrance into adult online arena.

first hit GFY ( my first board, told was the best place to start LOL) in around april or may of 2003

First convention was Jan 2003 internext.

Those were the golden days, I would KILL to go back to 1996, fresh out of high School. Al Hadhazy paying me $.02 per click and I made $300 or so a week and I thought I was GOD, lol!!!!

That was until I followed in Serge's footsteps for a while and click brokered and got my first check for $5,000.00 from ScottPB 4 months or so out of high school ;)

Colin, Serge, get a couple others, and we should put a "Prove you were around in 96-97" Quiz ;)

None of this easy Multiple Choice Shit, 500 questions... An essay describing the changes over the years, LOL J/K - Would be interesting though for a simple quiz to see how many claim they go back way than that would 'pass' :)

First Question, what was COTAC and who was John? :) And what does COTAC have to do with something else I already mentioned in this post :D

Youd be amazed at how many people still dont bother with webmaster boards. Answering a quiz isnt relevant...making cash is!

I verified mine this morning to myself. webarchive has an Oct, 1996 reference to my first non-adult business. My first two clients were adult sites and I started a 50/50 split with one of them on any traffic I could generate. Not sure how long before October that would have been.

We (Maxcash) did something like this a while ago - gave away some cash to the first person to answer all 10 questions correctly.

As I recall - Colin was one of the correct answers.

Gonzo, it was a joke mate :D

As far as I remember there were no webmaster boards in mid 1996, maybe program webmaster boards if even that. Other than that, if there were I don't remember visiting them off hand. I believe it was 1997 when webmaster boards startng popping up in droves... YNOT being the first one I remember spending time at.

Than again, just because I didn't see them doesn't mean they weren't there ...

I remember when I did the Condom challenge , and people went nuts when they kept seeing my titles on the top list.

"Some sick fuck is selling kiddy porn , Nick!!"
"Fuck!!! where?"
"It says "Only 15 !! Teen pics!!!"
"We'll there's only 15 pics , of a teen LOL"

For a load of webmasters it was educational. ;-))

And those were tame for some of the toplist link titles...

Here's a memory. Back sometime in the 90s I had a site called "10 free pics". It was getting about 10k visitors/day circle-jerk. One day I was thinking about how the top 50's worked and realized that if I sent a lot of traffic at the reset that I would end up high on the lists. So I set my alarm to (I think) 3am (midnight PT) and set a huge font size = +4 link to adult origin on top for an hour. After the reset I was about number 10 on the list and that traffic came in and went out to other toplists. The next night I stayed up and redirected the entire front page to adult origin and ended up number one. Then I did it with Cliffies. The site site went to 100k visitors/day in less than a week. Of course, I did it for a bunch of other sites too and then all the consoles (like Robin's). I must have been pushing 300k CJ traffic/day within a month.

I did this for weeks on end. Eventually I had a list of all the reset times and would keep setting my alarm to wake up at odd hours and do it again. Then I started to burn out so I called a friend of mine from college and asked him how I could automate it. He taught me how to use the crontab to move files around at different times. Pretty brute force but it worked. (He also said we could cheat by simulating "hits "and I said I didn't want to do that - that getting caught could ruin once's rep.)

I was talking to "Fantasyman" that week and he asked me that week where I was getting so much traffic. I told him I had always had it.

One night Spanker called me at 3am and asked me what the hell I was doing. I must have been tired. I told him. Within a week he had a site with more traffic than me. He trumped me with "10 teen pics". Either he told others or others figured it out because within a few months everyone was doing it.

Years later I saw a traffic trading script that had a feature to send traffic at scheduled times.

I used to wait til YNOTs toplist reset , then kick the living crap out of it.

I wasn't that sophisticated , I just clicked it myself as many times as I could when it reset :)

That traffic was pure gold!!!

There surfers had never seen a blind link or a console in there life.

ahahahahahahahahahahahahhaha :)

I'd get caught occasionally by Khan for having popups or blinds and be removed , then I'd change the site back to nice.

Ya know...I only did CONDOM/Netpond cause they would never let me be a member of YNOT...... :(

The time when I finally went "fuck this!!" was when I got beaten in the vote by some Asian chick...shit , can't remember her site

Colin, people definately backdate when they started ... it seems to be almost standard to put 'online since 1997' on a site, almost as important as '100 000 pics, 10 000 videos, 50 000 stories' :biglaugh:

I started in April 1998, a month after my 21st b'day. The first person I spoke to in the industry was Todd (STK). Launched purve in July 98 and went to my first show in Jan 1999 at the monte carlo. I met Serge & Em, Webfather and Terry & his wife Sarah from Tropixxx hosting in New York before the show and KK once I arrived at the show.

I missed most of the big bucks because I was too busy enjoying myself, but got one hell of an education!!!

If there was anything internet related I could do over, it would have to be skipping the non-adult stuff entirely, it was way too far ahead of its time. People just weren't going to pay 3k for a sofa they saw on a dial up connection...

I got pretty lucky when I started in adult, between Nick and Tommy yelling at me with their funny accents all the time about how bad my sites were, how pretty they were, how they made the surfer want to stay instead of clicking on a sponsor link, how I was never going to make it in this business, you name it... it really taught me that it takes a tough skin to manage with this crowd.

i think that timetables get messed up. people correlate webmaster boards with the industry.. which is n ot one to one, so we end up with mismatched dates.

I registered my first adult domain, whosyourdaddy.com, in march of 1996. i lost that one when i accidently let it expire (irony there is palpable). But before that i had dabbled in adult through other hosting companies, using subdomains, and ~ acounts.

previously, i had dealt in online tgraffic only in mainstream, through the commonwealth network, and did HTML work and Design on the side, as well as scripting. This is while i was in college, so id place my first income solely from the internet at somewhere around the beginning of 1995, meaning that i have passed 10 years and now feel terribly old:)

Colin, people definately backdate when they started ... it seems to be almost standard to put 'online since 1997' on a site, almost as important as '100 000 pics, 10 000 videos, 50 000 stories' :biglaugh:

50 thousand stories?

Thats like 50 eggs.

I wrote a piece of Hit Bot code in 1999 as a proof of concept. I saw people releasing them, and all they did was directly get a URL and sent no headers etc. Very easy to detect.

The one i made sent full HTTP headers, with referrer and useragent, and also grabbed images that were on the page etc, to make the server logs look real :)

It was very basic and shitty, and just really designed to make people think more and be more inventive with stuff they coded like that.

A friend of mine put it on his webpage for download, and it ended up on big security portal/tool sites. A guy in Oz found it and sent me a mail asking if i'd like to work on some porn projects with him.

It's still online at its original home aswell :) http://www.ccitt5.net/archives/gma-click.c.gz

/*
** gma-click.c -- Standard 'click' version -- By GMA -- c5.hakker.com
**
** This program doesn't really do anything special. I just saw certain
** 'pr0n clickers' out there and thought they could be improved in a
** couple of ways, so put this together.
**
** 1) Delay for a random period.
** 2) Connect to web server through wingate.
** 3) Provide the web server with various headers from the alleged
** client including random "User-Agent" values and "Referer" values.
** 4) Download relevant images aswell as html to make the connection
** look legit.
**
** Before you run this you have to add lines like the one on line 104 for
** each piece of html/gif/jpeg you want to download. Read the code and
** figure it all out, then change what you want changing.
**
** (NB: Use only hostnames in the wingate file.)

I didn't use it for any sneaky purposes!

Hey Ant -

We were newbies together on CONDOM so I can definitely vouch for you NOT back-dating. lol Before I found CONDOM I too tried joining YNOT (like Nick) but was told that I was "too much of a newbie" and wasn't allowed in. So I fiddled around with free sites for awhile until I met this guy named Jimmer who told me I could learn to make more $$$ at this place called CONDOM. I took a peek, but never posted. Then the owner of the freehost that all my sites were on (yes, I was a free host warrior until '99 even - lol) sent out an email about CONDOM as well. I figured I'd better give it a try.

The first show I attended was the Miami ia2000 (Nick made me go - thanks Nick! :agrin: ) and that's where I met most of the people I still work with today. I wish I would have attended the ladies' luncheon, but I had been mis-informed... someone told me it was a male-bashing feminist group (yes, it was the New Jersey speedbump who told me - he started brainwashing me even back then), so I skipped it. I now read on Oprano every now and again that women I *wish* I had known longer were in attendance. Pisses me off at that missed opportunity to have met them YEARS earlier.

But to answer your question - YES.. people DO backdate when they started. I was shocked at how many people are now jumping on the pre-2k webmaster thing (Gonzo, didn't you start that one?) trying to say they started in the 90's... when I know damned well that they didn't. I'm not THAT old and my memory's not THAT bad... there's working under the radar and then there's just not being there at all. lol

Got listed on PK 5 days after I started, and immediately got 2-3K a day.
Cafe kicked me off their system when their own homepage would take

Went to the second largest ISP in Buffalo, and immediately accounted

You can't really trust the waybackmachine nor whois as to when someone started in this business. The waybackmachine has me starting in December of 96. Whois shows my first domain in July of 96. But, I actually had JamesandVictoria up on my isp account in February of 96. I suppose if you started after that, the waybackmachine would be kind of accurate.

I have an easy way of knowing when I started. I left the Air Force the first week ok November '96 and had my first site up the same week. Hit the jackpot with Yahoo on day 2 and had my first $10k check within 2 weeks of leaving the Military. Damn I rode that Yahoo listing like a sloppy slut.

MissEve - Remember when you, KC, and I got the C&D for selling the Pam & Tommy videos sometime in early '98. I know I changed my drawers that day.

Vick, I remember meeting you in Vegas in jan '98 along with Claudia. Was dealing with Tad a lot back then.

Grimm - Xpics was so bad about overpaying. I had someone call me up one day wanting to prepay $20k for a couple weeks traffic. Of course I said OK. After the 2 weeks they told me the traffic hadn't performed as well as they had expected and they didn't want to renew the deal. A few hours later a different Xpics rep called me saying they had just found my site and wanted to pay $25k for 2 weeks. Gotta love sales reps :)

Anyone remember the hotteen.com project? A dozen or so webmasters joined together and used the site to mix and grow traffic. Was a very successful project. Back when the TTS toplist script was king. Before TTS I used a script that Tom at BlueGravity built. Was better than using MKstats like I did for the first few months. Running a toplist by hand sucked but made a ton of $ until I found a way to automate it. Getting a script to run my toplists was like living in the dark all your life and someone flipping a lite on one day. Damn, that was a long time ago.

Damn, I was a real idiot back in the good old days... :(

I bought my first domain on March 17, 1997. I didn't even know how to copy and paste, so my first sponsor (Websplash at 1 cent per click) took me about two hours to write down and add to my site with notepad. hahaha

With that in mind, I had a friend who had a site listed on Persian Kitty. He was making $1500 a month, and since that was what I took home from the cabinet shop I thought that would be great. I tried for nine months to get listed on Persian Kitty, then when I finally did I put up so many banners I got kicked off.

Someone told me about YNOT, so I went there and read these crazy arguments between two guys. Serge and Viper. I wasn't going to waste my time watching them argue, so I went and started trading links with people. Who knew that was the golden age of YNOT... My site had NO stats, so I had no idea where my traffic came from, and thus I no idea how to get traffic. I am the Rocky Balboa of webmasters though, and knew their had to be a major piece of the puzzle I was missing... (can you say, understatement? LOL)

At one point, Snoops and 12 clicks took pity on me and explained to me what this game was really about. A few Yahoo listings later and I was making more than I ever dreamed possible for doing so little. :)

Later on down the road I met Sweet T and he offered me a job. I kept my sites going on the side, knowing that "this could never last," and moved to Atlanta. I've been here ever since.

The sites are just about dead now, but things have always been good with NatNet. I've learned a lot and had a great time... oh, and I didn't blow any of that Yahoo cash, except some on my yard. LOLOL
