OK, Lets say for a moment that in a moment of insanity, I wanted to start using raw mpeg4 on the sites.

This would require an encoder that could do batchs, maybe even an encoder that could work with Adobe Premier Pro 1.5

What would be a good program and ALSO what we be the best general setting one would use for Video being served on broadband and for video being server to the poor modem users.

Want to here ideas here...

Not sure for batch,

As far as encoders go, VirtualDub is a classic and works good, and FFMpeg is easily the most versatile encoder/decoder there is

If you meant a specific codec, you have alot of options. Microsoft Mpeg4 is probably the one with the widest installed base. Or Divx.

Cleaner xl will do batching for a variety of formats, it has dynamic links to adobe premiere pro / 1.5 and is from www.discreet.com

I use Compressor but that is Mac only.

I've heard good things about Sorenson Squeeze.

If Cleaner is not your bag, as stated above sorenson squeeze or canopus procoder might help from www.canopus.com ;)

Canopus is fast as hell compared to Cleaner. Ive used it in the past on large batch encoding projects.

I would really like to know how you make out using mpeg-4 files. It looks like a good format but I haven't switched Angel's movies over fearing problems with her Windows users.

I'm guessing that Macs, mpeg-4, and Strongbox get along but I haven't actually tested this on a Mac.

A lot of mobile phones use mpeg-4 as a basis for their video playback too ;)

OK, so educate me...

WMV is a version of mpeg 4 So is divx. And (I could be really wrong here) but I think Real also.

Is there just a plain jane codec out there for mpeg 4 that does not require special software to see it? Just like Mpeg kind of a holy grail of mpeg. If so, then where would one find iot and how would one encode to it?

There must be a ton of webmasters on this board that work video every day, hard to believe that we can't find an elegant solution...

I wish I knew more about using mpeg-4.

On a Mac Quicktime plays it and I thought that WMP played them on a PC.

I just did a test with a .mp4 movie and Strongbox and it did play just fine.

These links above may indeed help to answer your questions

Most windows and now mac's can play wmv/mpeg files, xvid/divx will always require a separate plugin which the user will hae to download. Real player is not used so much as it takes over the entire system and wants to be super fucking helpful to itself, not the user. There are alternative players out there that can play real files, but again its another download. Quicktime can play mpeg and mov files, but again a separate download for the user.

I use both vegas video and premiere pro, on occasion procoder, but the codecs you should look at for these programs come primarily from http://www.mainconcept.com/products.shtml to encode/decode
