I watched this very interesting show late last night on BBC Canada.

They had about 80 guests from all parts of the world incl Prince Faisal ,Sen.McCain ,Iran's Foriegn Minister , heads of various international orgqainisations.

They had also commission this survey :

Press Releases
In 18 of 21 countries polled, President Bush's re-election is seen by most as negative for world security

Category: World Service

Date: 19.01.2005

On the eve of the inauguration of President Bush, a BBC World Service survey of 21 countries across the world suggests that his re-election in the United States is seen as negative for global security by a majority of people in 16 countries and a sizable number (39%) in two other countries.

The poll also finds that, for a substantial minority of people worldwide, attitudes towards George Bush's re-election is feeding a more negative attitude towards the American people as a whole.

Forty-seven per cent say they now view US influence in the world as largely negative.

The survey, conducted by the international polling firm, Globescan, suggests:

Western European, Latin American and Muslim countries are the most negative towards President Bush's re-election. On average across all countries, 58% said that President Bush's re-election was negative, while 26% said that it was positive for global security.

Three countries see President Bush's re-election as more positive - Philippines (63%), India (62%) and Poland (44%).

Traditional US allies are among the countries most negative about Bush's re-election. These include all western European countries polled - Germany (77%), France (75%), Britain (64%) and Italy (54%). Close US neighbours Canada (67%) and Mexico (58%) were also quite negative. So too was Australia (61%).

For a substantial minority worldwide, negative feelings about President Bush are reflected in feelings towards the American people as a whole. Asked how Bush's election has affected their feelings towards the American people, 42% on average said it made them feel worse towards the American people. Twenty five per cent said it made them feel better and 23% said it had no effect.

Countries with predominantly Muslim populations are also quite negative about President Bush's re-election. In Turkey, although a US ally, an overwhelming 82% were negative about Bush's re-election – the highest of all the countries polled.

Muslims are especially likely to say that Bush's election is negative (76%), that they now feel worse towards the American people (62%), that US influence in the world is mainly negative (60%) and that they are opposed to contributing troops to the Iraq operation (82%).

Asked how they feel about contributing troops to Iraq, not one of the 21 countries polled has a majority in favour.

Although France is often presumed to be overwhelmingly anti-American, only a modest 54% majority said they viewed US influence as negative.

Almost 22,000 people were polled on five continents in this survey which was conducted for BBC World Service by GlobeScan.

GlobeScan President Doug Miller comments: "While the top-line survey findings will not surprise many observers, a deeper look reveals that the Bush re-election is starting to affect the world's view of American citizens in general.

"And this is not the only finding that suggests some serious implications for America.

"Fully one in four British citizens say the Bush re-election has made them more opposed to sending troops to Iraq, resulting in a total of 63 per cent now opposed."

Notes to Editors

The global poll was conducted in 21 countries; Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Philippines, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Spain and Turkey. In addition to the 21 countries polled, a poll of 1,000 Americans was conducted.

In eight of the countries the sample was limited to major metropolitan areas. The sample size in all countries except Brazil, Philippines and Poland was 1,000 people or more. The poll was conducted between 15 November 2004 and 3 January 2005.

GlobeScan is a global public opinion firm with a research network spanning 50 countries.

A leader should not base his decisions on whether they will be popular with other countries.

Bush doesn't work for France or Germany he works for the American taxpayers. And the majority of them decided they liked the job he was doing well enough to let him do it for another 4 years.

He does what he thinks is best for the interests of the U.S. without regard to whether it pisses off some country in the middle of europe that is smaller than most of our states. Whether I personally agree with each decision or not, I wholeheartedly agree with not factoring in "world opinion" when it comes to making hard decisions.

The media and the average idiot reading their stories know nothing about leadership and management.

Nick -- when you and GonZo make decisions about what to do with Oprano, how much time do you spend analyzing whether all of the other adult boards are going to approve of it or not? Dont tell me you wouldn't do something just because all of the other boards would consider you an asshole for doing it if you thought it was the right decision for Oprano?

George Washington was slandered through out Europe as an assassin.

Man European countries helped the south, during the Civil War.

France tried to install a dictator in Mexico and lead an insurection of Mexican into California and Texas.

I could type for day and not run out of things the world, and especually Europe have tried to pull over on the US.

The more Europe get rankled, the better the President must be doing. Be it Washington, Teddy Rooservelt, Reagan, or Bush!

China and India will surpass the US in Terms of total production of the global economy by 2020 by population alone.

by 2050 India will have double the United States (which holds firm at 21%)

But this is not a bad thing, it is a GOOD thing. globalization is supposed to even things out.

THe United States does not want or need to be the only superpower, especially when it comes to the War on Terror, and keeping East Asia from crumbling.

After 2-3 years of massive character killing of Bush, then its no surprise.... what really is a surprise is how much Bush is blamed for in other countries. Politicians around the world have been using Bush as a scapegoat for their own failed politics - country economy is bad = blame Bush, high oil prices = blame Bush, ethnic/religious problems = blame Bush... I have even heard european politicians blame Bush for the changes in the world climate

Its all about perception - fact is that no single individual on this planet has the power to fuck things up... sure they might have influence, but thats not the same as waking up one morning and then realising hell on earth, which is what some Bush haters on earth think Bush did one morning.

I have said this many times before, I think when all is said and done and history allows for the truth to come out ( ala the Mcartney era, or herbert hoover, iran contra, etc...)

Bush will go down as the worst president in US history!

I only hope and pray that it is not able to be the worst global momet in history under his watch.

As measured by what? Truman left office with a 23% approval rating. Today, he is considered one of the best US presidents. Who could have foreseen that?

Bush's "Judgement Day" is far in the future.

Yes it is.

I think history will treat Bush very well. He is a true leader, a President who is willing to use his power to make real changes in the world and at home.

Bush knocks out SS reform and major tax overhaul at the same time smacking down another terrorist country ( either Iran or Syria) - I will be doing back flips!!!

Wow you're a fucking moron. Prince Faisal died in 1999, so I very highly doubt
that he was on TV last night talking about what Bush has been doing lately.
At the moment Iran is openly calling a UN resolution calling on them to cease certain
uranium enrichment perations "illegal" and daying that they will not cooperate
with U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency. You say the Iranian foreign minister
doesn't like Bush. Not shit, I wonder why? Maybe because they know he's not likely
to put up with that shit for too long.

I saw a TV show on which everyone was stoned.
I saw another show on which everyone was wearing orange
shirts and white pants. You saw one on which some
people didn't liek Bush. What's your point? That because
this show found some people wo don't like Bush (such
as the Iranian), that means the whole world hates Bush?
Well I guess if you believe that you also believe that the
whole world is wearing orange shirts because that's what
they were wearing on the show I saw.

I have no doubt that bush will go down in history as one of the worst presidents ever. bush haters can have the reassurance of knowing that historically, lame duck presidents (in their second term) leave some disgraceful legacy behind and are often known more for that than anything else. Few examples...

Nixon - Watergate
Reagan - Iran contra
Clinton - Blowjob/lying under oath

What will be bush's legacy? Deficit larger than every president before him combined? Iraq being his personal Vietnam? An early departure JFK style? Time will only tell...

Lame duck refers to the period between when your successor has been elected and when they take office so not sure what you mean.

Two term presidents? It's actually a fairly good list of presidents.

Full two terms ..

Washington
Jefferson
Madison
Monroe
Jackson
US Grant
Grover Cleveland
Woodrow Wilson
FDR
Eisenhower
Reagan
Clinton

Incomplete two terms ...

Teddy Roosevelt
Nixon
Truman

You got that right! It's not just China either. Being an American in Australia I'll tell you that Australia is positioning itself to be Americas gateway to Asia.

My sons public grade school teaches Japanese as a mandatory class, he's been taking it for 3 years now.

Through all my travels the last few years I've had more and more people ask me about Bush and American politics then ever before. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, who initiates conversations about American politics thinks Bush is a tyrant and doing the wrong thing, not to mention they think he's an incompetent president.

How many of you guys travel overseas often? Those that do will know what I'm talking about. America also twists the arms of other nations excessively to get what it wants and these countries have a growing resentment towards the U.S.

Every great civilization has fallen and every great country takes turns being the world super power ( United Kingdom, Russia, China, etc. ) I just hope Bush hasn’t accelerated our fall as the current super power. Bush can kiss my butt :moon:

I think the major problem I have with the rabid Bush supporters is a total unwillingness to acknowledge any of the BAD shit that his policies have done.

-Insert standard war rhetoric here-

Every president in my lifetime has been good and bad for various reasons.

LBJ as mentioned - Civil Rights / Welfare State
Nixon - Watergate / OSHA, EPA
Ford - I don't really count Ford since he was an accident
Carter - incredible progress in world peace / Horrible Economy
Reagan - Iran Contra - HUGE deficit / The Fall of the Berlin Wall
Clinton - Balanced Budget - Great Economy - Military Cuts, Bosnia, etc
Bush - First Term - Tax Cuts - Removal of the Taliban / Record deficit

Every policy has a flip side of the coin

Unless you look at and give value to that flip side, you are simply blowing hot air.

"We are the Walmart of the world. Everyone bitches that we're doing horrible things, but everyone keeps coming and wants to be as successful as we are."

You're right!

We are well known for our movies. Any movies you goto overseas, that is a blockbuster, will be an American movie, with Oooohs and Aaaahs at the special effects :-D

You know, as I'm constantly having to defend America here in Oz, I say pretty much the same thing to people. They bitch about all the American shows on Australian T.V. , American businesses etc. Then I say , we brought you the internet, cable tv, etc. etc. Then they say that a lot of Americans are full of themselves etc. etc. Not all Ozzies are like this, but the ones who haven't travelled and don't understand the differences in culture are. My sons first teacher here in Oz used to correct his speaking in front of the class and say "that's an Amerian term, we say ... here" Needless to say his first year here was difficult.

I personally think it's small penis syndrome since Oz hasn't sent a satellite into space since the 70's :-P But having Bush as president has made it much more difficult for those of us overseas and businesses over seas as well. i.e. here in Oz they've started knocking off popular American brands in the stores with copycat australian brands ( usually McCain and DickSmiths with the australian flag on the package) So our companies go through the tremendous expense of bringing a product into Oz, the stores see if it's successful, if it is they will do a knock off of the brand and stop carrying the popular American brand.

Sorry about the rant guys but I'm just trying to give you some insight from me living here for a few years. Bush has made life difficult overseas not to mention when I first came to Oz the conversion rate was 50cents to the dollar now it's 78 cents to the dollar so Bush has cost me a lot of money. ok.. rant over .. thanks for reading :okthumb:
