It makes more sense as percentage of GDP. The peak was during World War II when you consider the size of the economy - which is intuitively correct.

yes i agree. you also have to think of inflation and the value of the dollar. the global economy's effect on the debt, etc.

Just perspective. 1987 surprised me the most.

I wonder what's sustainable. A number of countries have more debt than the US relative to the size of the economy. The scaled US debt is average for a G7country.

I read an article about the US and its place in the global economic community. It has dropped from 27% to 21% since 1950, because of developement in other nations. It is estimated that both China and India will eclipse the US in total revenue, etc by 2020, and that India will double by 2050. This si of course because China has a population far greater than ours, and India is 4X our population as well. But India and China are also emerging economic powers.

Caveat: this is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing, as the goal is globalization, the spread of democracy, giving up a little bit of the pie is natural for those goals
