View Full Version : Are pornographers pessimists by nature?

It seems to me that the "the sky is falling" dialogue has outweighed the "getting it on" dialogue for quite some time, maybe even since the beginning.

Are we just that cynical as a group? Is it because of American conservative power? Is it because of the 80/20 rule - most people are just not doing that well for normal reasons?

Easier for some to bitch about not making a buck than to get off their asses and make something happen perhaps?

I am and have always been a starry eyed optimist. So not all are pessimistic. :D

I think being uninformed, easily influenced, and limited in social contact my add to the tendency to be pessimistic. If you bury your head in the sand and just read these boards your blood pressure could likely reach alarming levels.

Work hard, play hard, turn porn profits into brick and mortar businesses.

Last year was the best year I've had since I've been in this biz.

I'm actually very optimistic for 2005 and beyond.

I guess it is all a matter of where you are and your prospective in life.

I second that!!

I've been pessimistic for the last 2 years - couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel until mid last year ...

by nature, i'm a positive person ... but circumstances can alter us - only for a short time for the lucky ones :)

I don't think being pessimistic is a porn industry thing, its a life thing ... maybe this industry just attracts a lot more people who are at negative stages in their life? at least these days ... its a job where you can sit at home and watch tv all day, so it attracts lazy morons.

We are an industry that gets very little positive reinforcement other than cold hard cash.

Although everyone wants and uses our products in private, we are ridiculed and looked down upon by the "normals". Try going to some local parties hosted by your chamber of commerce sometime and hob knobbing with the other business people in your area. When they ask you what your company does, proudly say "I sell porn on the internet!". See how it goes.

It's hard to be positive and proud about what you do in this biz no matter how good you are at it.

We're all entrepreneurs and you cant be succesful and pessimistic at the same time, not for long at least.

I've always been optimistic, sometimes to a fault. Things can falling down around me and I'll just think it's going to get better somehow. :headwall:

On the flip side, I'm also over cautious. Too many mistakes have made me gunshy on many things

I'm definitely a pessimist, but in some ways it's a strength.

I always hope for the best but plan for the worst. The mere fact that I dont do anything without at least having a Plan B means I expect Plan A to fail and am thus a pessimist.

But it also means I'm rarely caught unprepared.

There is another side to that coin, in that the members of the local chamber of commerce do surf for porn, and in knowing what you do will shit bricks and think you are their webmasters to whom they send kinky emails, surf for porn and download from LOL

I see a new head of the chamber of commerce :biglaugh:

I'm naturally inclined to be like this too. But I would like to be more like Sun Tzu... and always give myself no option but to suceed at plan A.

Oh yeah, that's the beauty of it. The same guys who will denounce you in public and to all of their friends will privately beg you for passwords.

>Oh yeah, that's the beauty of it. The same guys who will denounce you in public and to all of their friends will privately beg you for passwords.

HP, one of my favorite activities is to out these people - in front of as many spectators as possible ;-)

I'm proud of most of the things I do, but it helps being able to say 'i run an adult site for women' ..... you won't often find me talking about generating traffic for teen sites or owning a teen paysite, because no matter how much we justify why we have a niche called teen, it just doesn't sit right with most of the general public - and I can't say I disagree.

Here's something I get OFTEN, and it never ceases to surprise me ...

"I hear you do porn"
"yes"
"So you don't do any of that kiddy porn do you?"
"WTF DO YOU THINK DUMBASS?!!?"

How have the general public learnt to see adult entertainment and child porn as the same industry?

I am a cynical optimist. I see opportunity all the time, but at the same time I always look for the down-side - what could kill it. I don't dismiss it, I merely have learned via scientific methodology to assume it's invalid and try my best to prove it to be valid.

Yes, I am a math/physics/nameIt geek.

When all else fails, I use the Venturi Quotient (http://www.smutclinic.com/bonus/) to bring things back into perspective.

Oh, man. I have been asked that about a dozen times in the past year. Just last night at the club actually.

Thank the media.

Their mind immediately connects pornographer with child porn.

Again, most of the world views us in the most negative light possible.
