View Full Version : How long will Oprano be an adult board?

Or is it even just an adult board now?!

Has anyone else noticed that we are gravitating to groups we have worked with in the past, and repeating the exact same things we did in 97/98/99?

Was just browsing through some of the signatures of opranauts, and have been chatting to a lot of people lately about what they are up to ...

I haven't touched a *porn* site in over a year ... and yet about 50% of my projects for 2004/2005 were/are with the oprano extended family.

I thought it would help a bunch of us, based on conversations with individuals, if we all posted some of the areas of business we are working in this year, and some that we would like to work on?

Current Project Areas

> Providing Mobile Phone Content
> Purve 'naughty' straight women/gay men Print Mag
> Natural Australian Vitamins & Supplements
> Celebrity
> Casino
> Ebooks
> Stock Photography

A bunch of us from the original condom days have been working away over at mainstream webmasters, http://www.mainstreamwebmasters.com and its amazing where everyone has landed, but then come back together like magnets LOL

So if you want to work with the Oprano family on projects in the future, post your 'areas' of interest here (you don't have to give away any secrets, just what you are interested in working with others on!) ...

Even if it means nothing now, its good to know if someone you already know is doing something you need ... 'keeping it in the family'

Plus, I'm just curious to see what's in store for this year from everyone ;-)

I think everyone here should leave the adult biz and leave this dirty biz for me.

I came from mainstream into the porn biz and my only fear is ever having to go back to mainstream.

Personally I just don't get it. I like the adult biz. I especially like the fact that my biggest decision of my workday is if I should get dressed before or after work.

Areas I have an interest in.

Real Estate
Casino
Limo service

I am still going full throttle in adult though. Cellularphones.com left a bad taste in my mouth as far as mainstream.

I think it's always been headed in that direction. I remember a remark Sweet T made when the board first opened about how this board was for those getting OUT of adult, not for newbies looking to get in. :okthumb:

Colin, wow!! see I knew you were up to something over there ...

Human Voice Portal iNetNow Available Through CellularPhones.com; E-Tailer Offers Consumers Three Months of Free Access to Live Web Surfers via Telephone

Founded in 1999 by Colin Delia and Jesse Delia, the CPI Web site offers cellular phone products, services and the largest selection of accessories available on the Web. CellularPhones.com was designed to be a one-stop-shopping experience for those in the market for wireless technology. For more information, visit the company's Web site at http://www.cellularphones.com.

you say it left a bad taste? I can't see where anything negative happened?! are you no longer involved with the business? Looked like you were kicking ass from these articles?

Mainstream is a bit scary, but we don't need to be a part of that network, we can make our own - and have. When you start to ask around, you realize how many of the same 'porn' teams are still together, working on totally different projects.

I'll never consider myself 'out of porn', but my naughtiest site now is purve! LOL

We went out of business in '00. We looked like we were kicking ass because we had excellent marketing. The main error we made was to abandon the principles which had made us successful in adult. If only I had re-read buildinganempire.com ... not kidding ;-)

My attempt to move into mainstream was a downfall which took me a few years to recover from.

or perhaps if you were still writing the 'building an empire' series :awinky:

writing is as much about understanding it yourself is teaching it to someone else ;-)

wow so if you went out of biz in 00 you guys were really ahead of the curve over there!! that's not always a good thing though I guess ;/

an unrepeated mistake is a lesson learned ;-)

i've been getting in veeery slowly!!!

CJ,

The toughest lesson learned was not to sell a great revenue stream. What are the odds that selling a good revenue source for one or two year's profit is really going to be worth it? If you were Max Cash's number one affiliate would you have sold out? I did.

the lesson can extend to (for me!) letting good revenue generators die because you don't have time ...

the odds are that its *rarely* going to be worth it to sell for 2 years profit unless you hate the project and don't want to deal with it!!! ... it depends on what your plan was going in, obviously not to lose money? ... but who knew? LOL

Oddly enough I see that CJ's avatar has gone back to the rubber sex doll during this mainstream versus adult thread.

Now to be somewhat off topic and irrelevant …
I'm going to get my old fat ass into the shower, then smoke some weed, and go take some of my hard earned adult money and go to the mall on this rainy day.

Back on topic… kind off,
Guess you could try selling electronics, 113.5 billion in dollars sold in 2004 (http://www.itfacts.biz/index.php?id=P2397). Problem is now you are competing with large corporations. Nice thing about adult is a whole lot less businesses will touch it.

Best thing that has happened to me in many years is a fetish site walked up to the front door of my house. The only thing I'm trying to do is figure out how to duplicate this success.

I am still hanging out on Oprano, and I am not longer in the porn biz.

There is a whole world out there, with millions of opportunities. One must only open their eyes to see.

CJ Whilst I would dearly love to share what we are doing here, it's a double edged sword in the fact that there are not just Oprano family here, but others who lurk that are not family.

You have some idea of what we as a group are doing at the moment, as do others reading this post, with whom I have been chatting with about developments, ideas and projects in motion.

Personally, I still do adult in terms of design and 3d etc, my corporate and mainstream interests will always be there as they are remain my origins.

All I will mention is that our newest interests lie in "3g and it's glorious derivatives"

The members of Oprano are welcome to contact me on icq at any point, and I would welcome the opportunity to explore and discuss mutually beneficial business, for either adult or mainstream.

I still have a handful of computer clients that I do consulting for. At this point about the only reason I still do consulting is that deep down I really am a whore who can't say no to money. lol Actually it is the fear of one day waking up and for whatever reason my porn income is gone.

I've always believed in finding something that works and stay focused on it and not dilute it by going off in a bunch of other directions.

My consulting clients are all mainstream advertising and design. I see how hard they have to work and how difficult it is for them, I know I used to do it. Fuck that, I don't want to have to work that hard, I'll stick to marketing nasty nekkid pics.

a few people know about the new venture I just got major funding for and is now under way
we also have 5 offshoots of that
I also have brief involvement in a satellite GPS system (much different than current systems and with nearly live web/wireless-based updates)
a good friend is launching a VOIP netowrk aimed primarily at small businesses and I'll be working with that as well
my first forray into mainstream, buildpage.com, will be re-visited (already has been expanded and improved upon by the original man with the plan) and we're using lessons learned during our first forray into mainstream when we were young and naive and didn't quite know how venture capital, playing the dotcom game, etc. worked

I'm still in adult though, with a commitment to help continue to grow evilgeniuscash

My main reason for branching out into mainstream is my kids really. I find myself just not as interested in the business and some of the people in it. Having kids and watching them grow up in a world different than the one I grew up in has changed my perspective a lot. I also see a lot of untapped opportunities and I finally have decent funding to pursue this main venture that I never had before.

Amen to that.

I let all my free sites traffic just die away , through gaining some degree of success from SE's.

It was easier.

I let the SE traffic die away through errrr some degree of success from Bulk Mailing.

It was easier.

Sold Netponf to Meat and Aga for around a years income.

It was easier.

hmmm there seems to be a common thread here....

Ah yes easier.

Nowadays..

I am rebuilding my Internet Porn Empire and am having some degree of success

Its much harder.

There is still alot of money to be made in the porn area and in some ways its easy , however the REAL money is in non porn.

What interests me is building a business that is acceptable to mainstream that generates sufficient revenues to one day float on the Nasdaq. That is still my goal.

Sweeet....stocks , options ...no need to worry about VISA.

I'll even handle in house the publicity and Investors Relations for the vehicle when its together ;-)))

What excites mt most these days is that I love the new ideas floating round the board and the transfering of old adult methods into mainstream.

I'd personally love however to find a way to take VISA out of the loop...

I HATE relying on them for income which currently to an extent we all do.
I love the ideas I hear from Newton and Cj.

I love the ideas on normal traffic I hear from Joe and Inabon.

I love the hosting ideas from Inabon

I like the casino ideas and mainstram products being worked on quietly in the background by other I talk with.

I'm excited to see what Almighty Colin is gonna pull out of his ass.

I think 2005 is the return of the Veterans.

I am actually enthused for the coming year.

Oh and I love one day to see an Ad for Mercedes-Benz ,one day, on Oprano.. ;-))

With all this talk and optimism about 2005, I am very curious to see where we are all are at this time next year. I know I am moving to Vancouver and intend to work less and make more money. There seems to be a lot of talk about mainstream this and mainstream that, but I am willing to bet, not a lot will change. It won't be like 1998 where you could make a million dollars with no real talent. I am very curious to see what all the "high rollers" really learned about business when they go head to head with those with real, real world experience. My prediction???? You will all be doing porn. I hope I am wrong if you really want to get out of it, but that is still my prediction. No fudging on the definition of porn either.

As I said in my first post, I haven't touched a porn site in a year ... and I can fudge the definition of porn all I like because I have the assets & marketing to get away with it.

There are many of porn's original high rollers who have never looked back at porn ... its limited ... you can only ever take it so far ... and no matter how much money you make from porn, the ceiling is too low for those of us with big dreams.

ive been out of the adult biz for a while now. most of my current partners came from the adult world initially, some came from the mainstream technical end of the world. The last Intercosmos partner to leave the adult biz was MikeAI, so now we are all out of it, for the most part.

I dont know about the rest of yall, but once i got the smell of adult off of me (believe me it was getting worse and the new blood was outweighing the old.) I am a technical person with a knack for research and marketing. I have never been into content from anything other than a promotional standpoint. I think thats why once i started getting jaded it snowballed fast. that and the mainstream ventures i entered went from solid to very good, and i did not need to be involved in an industry of which it was getting hard to see my friends and for what its worth, the good of the whole thing. I remember the first convention i went to after my hands were out of the pot, so to speak. it was odd looking at it from the outside. I think those of us who have gone mainstream and remained in adult at the same time don't notice it as much because they have to deal with it every day. But i have heard some of the best minds in adult voice their frustration with the adult business, the new blood, the hundred dollar millionaires, the big talkers, the extre, for me tendencies for shock value, and the big talkers. Once you take both feet out of the pond, you can see the scum from the good water, for sure:)

Thats what i like about this board, good people. I think it says something that people who are out of adult still like to come back here for the conversation, banter, and to stay in touch with people they have known for what seems like ages. At least it does for me. I have no financial reason to be here, i just like the company :agrin:

I wasn't pretending. I knew you wouldn't answer. But I also know that a whole lot of folks around these boards, have a very limited view of the greater world of porn. "Mainstream" porn is what most discussion revolves around here. Most of the fuckbucks, dirtybucks, platinum this and that and the rest of it are not my world nor are they for a whole lot of this industry. So, the "players" don't make me money, nor most of my colleagues. But you already knew that I am sure.

I would say that it looks like an offshoot of porn to me. Adult...call it what you like. Still the same kind of traffic and business. I don't mean that to be offensive, but it still is in the same genre. Even the title....Purve.

lucky for me you aren't the one responsible for marketing it, or we'd be missing a lot of opportunities with that narrow line of thinking ;-)

there's a hell of a lot of companies & advertisers in mainstream who feel differently :awinky:

Its not narrow thinking. Its just what you can get away with. Personally, I don't really care. Its just my thought. Marketing sex is still marketing sex. I advertise in magazines they sell in corner stores. I would call them porn, but lucky for me lots don't feel that way as well.

if your definition of porn is 'marketing sex', then football is porn, cars are porn, clothing is porn, sunglasses are porn, music is porn .........

this is the official definition of porn (the only one that matters in court):

porn

n : creative activity (writing or pictures or films etc.) of no literary or artistic value other than to stimulate sexual desire [syn: pornography, porno, erotica, smut]

this definition is what has saved many *porn* companies from being prosecuted for obscenity - and has caused many to be prosecuted for not meeting it.

so while the intention is to make straight women and gay men horny, adding some articles and following community censorship standards means this isn't defined as porn.

you and I can argue our opinions all day long, but the only definition that matters is the official one.

I would never argue a legal definition. In fact, who else but a pornographer or lawyer would even care or know. Hell apparently in the United States, a blow job is not sex. But marketing a mag called Purve, is still in the same line of work. Same traffic (I know Nick will argue that traffic is just traffic, but I disagree). Not a big leap into "mainstream" is all I am saying. Its not like all of a sudden selling...say George Forman Grills.
I know sex sells everything, but that is not the discussion.

i'll always consider myself a pornographer Rhymer, so its not that I'm pulling a Lee Noga.

you are missing the bigger picture ...
everything you just said is the reason why this makes so much sense ... and no, it isn't anywhere near the same line of work. and no, it isn't a big leap into mainstream ... again, that's the whole point.

Why would someone with over 6 years of content for women start selling george foreman grills? How would that be a smart crossover?

Why does changing direction have to be a big leap? That just seems like a waste of resources to me ...
