I love watching movies. Often lay in bed and watch one before I fall asleep.

List some of your favorite, maybe lesser known, movies here so the next time a fellow Opranoite wants to rent a movie they might try something they haven't seen before.

We Were Soldiers- best vietnam movie I have ever seen

The Count of Monte Cristo - stars Jim Caviezel the same guy who played Jeses in Gibson's Chrsit movie. Great adaptation of the book.

October Sky- great story about a kid in a coal town who beats the odds to get out and work at NASA.

Mr Hollands Opus- about a guy who takes a job in high school teaching music as a temporasy thing and ends up affecteing the lives of countless students over the years.

Primal Fear- great lawyer movie where Edwrad Norton should have been nominated for an Academy Award for hisrole as a client accused of murdering a priest

Devil's Advocate- just watching the rant by Deniro at the end of the film where he talks about what God is "really" like is exactly the type of speech you could imagine the Devil giving himself if was trying to talk to you.

Blown Away- an underrated flick starring Jeff Bridges as a cop who is on the Boston bomb squad who's changed his name to hide his past in the IRA. Tommy Lee Jones co-stars as his former colleauge that comes back to haunt him.

They almost look the same anyway :P

If i could throw in some movies you HAVE to watch (even thou u have probably already seen them), i would say:

Fight Club - Much more than just guys fighting, this is a right of passage movie for the males of our generation.

Donnie Darko - Unique, Jake Gyllenhaal is perfect for this movie about ... well, about everything pretty much.

The Shawshank Redemption - Had to include it. If you havent seen it, go see it right now.

Cypher - Has its flaws, but the movie caught me totally by suprise and i really enjoyed it.

Dogma - Kevin Smith at his religious best

Equilibrium - What the matrix sequals SHOULD have been like

Human Traffic - Only watch if you are the type who hits the clubs alot with alot of party pils ... if so, this is the best fucking pre-party warmup movie ever.

The Man Who Knew Too Little - Funny Bill Murrary Classic

Lost in Translation - Serious Bill Murrary Classic, watch it when your not in a hurry

O Brother, Where Art Thou? - The Coen Brothes classic remake of the homers odyssey, quirky and fun

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - Johnny Depp is my hero

The Ref - Underrated Denis Leary comedy, also starring Kevin Spacey.

The Royal Tenenbaums - You'll either love it or just not 'get' it

Se7en - Creepy and brilliant

Shaun of the Dead - Takes the piss out of the horror genre, but also a loving tribute.

Sneakers - Just cause it was one of the last movies to star River Pheonix, I usually wouldnt reccommend this movie because alot of people didnt like it, but personally, i loved it.

The Usual Suspects - Brilliant crime caper

Van Wilder: Party Liason - Fart joke comedy, but Ryan Renolds as Van Wilder turns an average comedy into a memorable classic

Should keep you busy :)

have seen and would recomend all of them except Cypher...haven't seen it, I'll have to check it out...
Equilibrium was a huge surprise...I'll never understand why this movie don't go out in a ton of theaters and make a shitload of money (especially in this day and age of neutered PG13 horror movies)

I also have to add the best movie about salesmen of all time (I've mentioned this movie several times and will continue to pimp it hard):
Glengarry Glen Ross -
Alec Baldwin squeezes in more acting ability in his 15 minutes of screen time than most actors will their entire careers.
Ed Harris is a criminally overlooked and underrated actor who has never had a bad performance yet and still tops himself in this movie
Al Pacino...what can I say?
Jack Lemmon - a god of acting putting on an acting clinic
Alan Arkin keeps pace with the rest of the cast and turns in a performance of a lifetime (see the pattern here?)
Kevin Spacey and Jonathon Pryce turn in great performances in limited roles
basically, this movie is an acting clinic and the most realistic movie about salesmen I've ever seen...

have you read the book? how many times? When was the last time?

Too much Hollywood, too little follow up of the original masterpiece.

Equilibrium was definately a surprise to me and i loved it... here are a few more for you to check out..

Withnail and I - English film detailing the last days of the 60's very funny, sarcastic look by two raging alcholics.

The Big Blue (directors cut) - One of Luc Besson's best films about free-diving, stunning scenery and storyline.

Deep Cover - Laurence Fishburn as an undercover cop who forgets the dividing line between cops and drug dealers.

Leon (the professional) - A hitman adopts a child to protect her from beinig shot by the corrupt police officers, delightful film.

The Blade - Japanese martial arts films about a one armed man, awesome choreography in the fight scenes

Waking Ned - A quaint english film about a winning lottery ticket in a small village and the way they find to collect on it.

Fair enough Serge. I read it many moons ago in college. I certainly won't argue about it being a not well done adaptation of the book but this is Hollywood we are talking about. It's rare that an adaptation even brings a pleasant experience to wtaching it on the big screen as they often butcher or outright change aspects that change the feel of the story. A more accurate description would be that it was a pleasant viewing experience though certainly not nearly as good as the book.

Hmmm... I used to go to the movies all the time, but I don't see all that many these days. Here are a few all time favorites off the top of my head.

Grumpy Old Men

Grumpier Old Men

( I REALLY loved Jack Lemon and Walter Mathau )

Moonstruck - the more times you see it, the funnier it gets. Especially if you're an Italian from Brooklyn. :awinky:

Lord of the Rings - get the extended DVD's. You'll understand a whole lot more...

And probably not on too many people's lists, but they get my vote:

Powder - I don't think this did too well at the box office, but I really enjoyed it.

Dances With Wolves - I hate Kevin Costner, but this was an excellent film IMO.

The reason Equilibrium didn't get a wide release was because it had already run into profit as a result of overseas sales, and Miramax didn't want ot risk turning a money maker into a loss.

Great idea. Lets take a movie which has now PROVEN to be successful, and not release it.

Glengarry Glen Ross you say?

Stunning cast, i will have to check it out. Is it recent? (some movies take awhile before they appear down under).

And yeah, check out cypher and tell me what you think, id be interested to find out what other people think of it. Its by the same guy who did the movie 'CUBE', another good one to check out if u get the chance.

Yep, Jeff Goldblum was in Powder. I think it was a little too cerebral to make it big at the box office. Heh...

Moonstuck is hilarious. It's got Cher, Nicholas Cage, Olympia Dukakis, Danny Aiello, and one of my all time favorites, Vincent Gardenia. It's a perfect depiction of the melodramatic Italian family. It seems to be on television at least once a month, and I always seem to catch it... :)

You know what else I saw lately that I really enjoyed? Scent of a Woman with Al Pacino. I am honestly not a huge fan of his, as I think he's quite the ham, but Scent of a Woman was an excellent film.

I loved Waking Ted Levine (the movie's title over here)

Leon is another of my favorites. Luc Besson's movies have this poetry to them and The Big Blue, while not my favorite of Besson's, is still damn good (La Femme Nakita is still my favorite thing he's done overall though)

Some of what I have on DVD (so liked enough to buy):

Blow -- Cant go wrong with Deep. Great first-person biography type

Casino -- eh, what can I say... Pesci, DeNiro, best performance ever by Sharon Stone... mob, casinos, beatings with baseball bats...

Snatch / Lock stock and two smoking barrels - Great stories, great acting, I love english accent. And do you want to know why these films feel different, up tempo and keep your interest? No love interest in either. (what does 98% of hollywood movie have?)

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas -- wierd and fun. (yeah yeah, I know about the books)

Platoon

Die Hard (purist might laugh, but eh, classic action movie)

there's more... but my memory is failing.... ALl these are worth seeing if you havent...

Raising Cain is highly underrated

A Clockwork Orange is Kubrick's best work (I found 2001 to be a bore)

My favourite movie has always been "American Graffiti". I went to see it in theatres when I was 7 years old with my "big brother".

He gave me a choice between that and Sword in the Stone from Disney.

The movie represents many things about life and growing up. I think it had a considerable influence on my life.

Lots of good stuff that I like, and some to add to the list.

Was suprised to see Alice's Resturaunt on anyone's list, though ... loved it when it was new, didn't think it aged that well.

Only one I'd add to the mix is a movie called "Z". Got nominated for both Best Film & Best Foreign Film (won the latter).

Well ... can't let a movie thread go by without plugging my favorite western of all times - Blazing Saddles.

Some of my favorites (no order)

Tombstone
Pulp Fiction
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Good Will Hunting
Pi
Jacob's Ladder
Vanilla Sky
Star Wars movies
Indiana Jones movies

The Wizard Of Oz (with Pink Floyd) - had to borrow that one. ;-)
Good list,

Pi especially i bought on dvd months ago and have been waiting to be in the right frame of mind to watch it. I saw Darren Aronofsky's other movie, Requiem for a Dream, and it was one of those movies which was just so full on.

I'm a big fan of movies that 'effect' you. It might not be a 'good' movie or a 'bad' movie, but if it emotionally moves you in some way (good or bad), I find it to be most satisfying.

Requiem for a Dream was one such movie.
Punch Drunk Love.
American Beauty.
Trying to think of others, but this hangover is clouding my mind.

And I cant help but put a plug in for my most favourite movie of all time, Ferris Beullers Day Off. When I was growing up, i wanted to be JUST like Ferris, to the point where i started skipping school during grade 12, and eventually bought a convertable
:agrin:

By the way, is anyone here big into manga? And more importantly, has anyone seen the latest remake of AppleSeed (http://www.apple.com/jp/quicktime/trailers/appleseed_large.html)? Im dying to see it, but it will probably be years before its released down under.

Movie night tonight:

Garden State - I really liked this. Didn't love it, but it was a funny, breezy movie. 4 stars

We Don't Live Here Anymore - I wanted to like this movie and it had a lot of potential, but it was very slow and boring most of the time. And I swear I think Laura Dern is one of the most unattractive females ever. 3 stars

He is definately either you 'like' him or you 'dont like him' kinda comedian. Personally, I loved Anchorman, but I think that the Brick the Weather Man in that movie (Steve Carell) stole the show.

I didn't like Anchorman either and I love Will Ferrell. Admittedly, I only watched 1/2 of it, but I'd had enough at that point.

Steve Carell was definitely a huge highlight of the movie

Will Ferrell just cracks me up

"You're like a miniature Budha...with hair"
"I'm gonna punch you right in the overy. Straight shot right to the babymaker"

Watched Napolean Dynamite today. Not the worst flick I've seen, but not near as bad as I've read here :awinky:

It was a little cute, but annoying too. 3 stars.

I think for some of the humor, you had to grow up in Mormon country (Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, etc.).

I went to school with a lot of Napoleon Dynamite types...
everyone where I grew up had an Uncle Rico-type relative
outside of the Indian population, there weren't a lot of minorities, so if a Pedro-type moved into the community, he'd be beloved by the outsiders and reviled by the uppity Mormon kids (LDS tends to be a very white religion)

Can't believe I left off my favorite movie of all time. What was I thinking. If I was on a deserted island and had only one movie to watch it's GOT to be Cool hand luke.
