View Full Version : Anyone else try Charlie Palmers...

The last night of the show, the town was freaking packed with CES people. Most of the normal FFN haunts were full up. So we had to pull a few strings and resort to the old standby "Amex Fine Dining Program" for reservations.

We managed to get late dinner reservations at Charlie Palmer's Steakhouse in the Four Seasons at Mandalay. Gets great reviews, it's convenient, and it's in the Four Seasons so we figure we cant go wrong.

Turns out to be one of the worst meals I've had this year. The service was not even in the ballpark of what I expect for a supposed world class steakhouse. We sat nearly 15 minutes without menus....we should've left then. Drinks sat empty for a long time, the waiter couldn't remember what we were drinking when he did finally ask. And they just weren't "on the spot" for anything.

Ok, so it's CES, maybe they've been stiffed by geeks all night and service is just "off". Nope, the food sucked too. I would be amazed to know how they managed to prepare such an excellent cut of aged beef in such a manner as to totally remove all flavor. It was absolutely bland. I swear I was tempted to ask for a bottle of A1.

We did get free dessert after the manager made the mistake of stopping by the table and asking how things were at one point where we were all sitting back looking bored waiting on Haley's Waiters to make one of their every 72 year passes. We told him. We received free desserts. I for one took a couple of bites and left that too....it also sucked.

I've eaten in many of the best steakhouses in this country, and I know how it's supposed to be. That wasn't it.

Just wondering if our experience there was an anomoly because I was pretty shocked.

I forgot to tell you the tea even sucked.

Personally, in a town full of excellent steakhouses, I think Charlie Palmers is overrated. I've eaten there twice and wasn't overly impressed...

one of my favorites is the standby Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and The Palms in Caesar's Forum Shops (not sure if it's still there though, haven't been there in ages)

Sykk...

You got the chef pedigree.... let me ask you a question.

How do you prepare a filet "European style"?

Do you boil it to cook all the flavour out?

Sorry about your bad dining experience... but the line, "I've eaten in many of the best steakhouses in this country, and I know how it's supposed to be", has left me unable to stop thinking about hitting a steakhouse for lunch!

How's this sound for for a FFN style place too! ;-)

european style is more how it's prepared and served
usually sliced really thin

I think most places use that term to make it sound fancier than it is ;-)

EDIT - it's also usually served in it's juices...maybe the chef spilled the juice on the floor and just tossed some water and beef boullion cubes on the plate ;-)

Im pissed they wont throw in a free desert.
Yes I ordered tea. southern boys like to interchange that with Coke A Cola.

It tasted like old orange marmalade.

If I make it to Tampa I plan on taking a stop at Burns.

I guess it must have either been a bad night or they've gone downhill in the last year or so. I had dinner there when I was staying at the Four for a wedding and it was quite good. I'm not saying Picasso or LeCirque or Delmonicos awesome, but it was nothing like what you guys describe.

Good to know tho.

well, I generally will give a restaurant a second chance just in case I hit an off night, and the second time wasn't much better...
while it wasn't terrible, it just seemed mediocre when there are some many other good places to eat for the same price or cheaper...
although my dining experiences with them weren't as bad as this

the service was still good

Didn't get to do it today :( But looks like we will make an attempt at our own Bricks on Thursday or Friday.

(Anyone in Sydney that would like to come along.. hit me up on ICQ 2556404)

But Baldbastard almost has me convinced to go to a Superbowl party in Vegas with him in early February... and wants to hit The Palm at the Ceasars for a meal http://www.thepalm.com/

How does that measure up? The website makes it look rather nice :)

The Palm is good, my off the top of my head favorite restaurants in Vegas include:

Picasso. IMO, there is nothing that compares to it in any way, shape or form. I've never had a bad meal there, I've never had sub-par service there, the staff is exceptionally professional and treats every patron warmly. At the Bellagio.

Delmonico. Once again a perennial favorite, they won't serve a table of more than 8 since they take pride in their plate presentation as well as their food and service.

Le Cirque. Usually a fantastic choice that's always reliable and always great. Bellagio.

Commander's Palace. A slice of old New Orleans that is superb. Aladdin

Foundation Room. The sheer amount of fine quality Persian rugs they ruined when they chopped them up to line the walls boggles my mind. The food is good, the wine list is extensive. Mandalay Bay.

Il Trattoria (I think that is the name of it, I usually call it the italian place at Caesars) -- very very good Italian.

Tsunami -- by far and away the best sushi I've had more times than I can count in Vegas. Venetian.

Zeffirino -- another wonderful Italian restaurant at the Venetian.

Thats just a few that stand out in my mind, there are lots more good places and more great places as well.

excellent list

a few others:

The Grill Room @ The Coyote Cafe in MGM (RIP) used to rock ;-)

off the strip on Sahara is a great place called Pamplemousse which is basically a converted house, excellent french food

Fiore in the Rio is amazing and the service excellent (a heavy local base, so they are high end service and lower on the snoot factor)

Gaylord in the Rio has really opened my eyes to Indian food. A great family-run place that is high on service and decent on price

The Peppermill is great
my wife and I go there to kind of get away from it all and relax...
our first out of town date when we first met was a night at The Riviera (I was an innocent chef in Laughlin at the time and couldn't afford to high roll ;-)) and had a lovely dinner at the Peppermill...so that place will always have a sentimental place in my heart

Kimmy is probably more well versed in casino places and my knowledge (since I haven't worked near a casino in 8 years) is relagated more to off strip places, local hangouts, etc.

Delmonico remains the king of the steakhouses that I have tried in Vegas.

I've never had a bad meal at ANYTHING in Bellagio including the cafe. If they were to put in a new restaurant that served nothing but nuts, eyeballs and assholes, I'd probably be willing to give it a try.

I was also EXTREMELY impressed with Emeril's in the MGM. They've re-done it sometime since the last time I looked at it, the decor looks great and the meal and the service was top notch.

Any list of Vegas restaurants always reminds me of the fact that I always end up blowing town before trying half the places I want....
