Just trying it out and on for size today... not sure what I think yet.

Just curious as to how many have thrown away MSIE for it - and what you liked about it best. Still playing with all the buttons & features.

I never use IE now except for testing sites offline, firefox is awesome.

There are some ways to speed up the browser too, can't remember where i found it , and it works a treat.

If you type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right mouse click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "5". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

Thanks for the tips!

Having fun playing around with this. I noticed on stats that for webmaster traffic we are getting about 8% now using Firefox - still nearly 84% with MSIE, but that's quite a leap from the last time I'd looked.

Still keeping MSIE but this is interesting to say the least....

I was using it , but it was preventing me from getting all those great browser redirects and pop up ads , so I changed back...

Yeah... I am missing all that fun... *sigh*

So far so good.... it does tend to screw up some pages though so I'm not 100% thrilled with that - but change IS good, so I won't give up yet.

I'm so sick of MSIE I could scream - hoping this is the next best thing...

I'm still a Netscape user...
abondoned IE a long time and haven't really got around to trying Opera or FireFox

I use IE to doublecheck designs, but that's about it...

Kath,

http://maxthon.com has all the nice features of Firefox.. but it handles popups and new windows much better imho. It also works on every site and is much faster than IE or Firefox (although that may not be true with the tweaks for firefox mentioned above)

I wish they had an affiliate program for it.. anyone that tries it seems to get hooked ;-)

I don't know why anyone would still use IE as their default browser these days with so many browsers with better features available.

Since I'm a Mac user I use Apple's default browser Safari since it is integrated better with the OS then other browsers but my second choice for a browser is one of the Gecko browsers like Firefox or Mozilla. Actually I prefer Mozilla over Firefox since it has more features which I find useful for doing geek and web work.

I started using it about 2 weeks ago. I love it. No crashing, no pop ups and after I did the tweaking, its really fast.

Thanks Opti - will try that too. You always have good suggestions! B)

This year I'm just in the mood to try out new things... I finally tore myself away from just using Notepad - okay, it's just Notetab Pro but babysteps.... babysteps.... lol

:yowsa:

Cleo - you're right... I clutched onto my beloved MSIE longer than I even held on to AOL back in the day... gosh, how embarassing.... so glad I'm making the move!

You are soooooo oLd ScooL Kath :)

I was using a 4.77mhz PC daily to punch out word processing up until about 1994 (yes that is less than 5Mhz) so I can relate to clinging to the old ways past the use by date too!

I realised something the other day... Do you remember when I first setup We Love Free Porn? And you didn't like that I was too lazy to make a proper graphic recip button? So you made one and emailled it over? (think that was even before I bought the domain name!) --> http://www.welovefreeporn.com/kathweluvporn.gif (http://www.welovefreeporn.com/)

When spidering all the listed sites recently I realised your button is by far the most popular recip image webmasters use!!

Cool Huh! :gbounce:

Dumped MSIE a few months back. Firefox is my default browser.

Opera would be my second choice.

I find Opera to be a little faster than Firefox on some things, so I default to Opera with Firefox as a fallback for those few pages that have loading issues.

My normal setup is to have Firefox running for my gmail box, and Opera for surfing, works quite well.

Yup, that is exactly what happens. I have been using it for awhile and it is always the same. Here is a download that might interest you if you use Mozilla and want to check Alexa....

It would crash on me at seemingly random and definitely infrequent intervals. I finally took the time to see what was actually crapping out and noticed the crash was always occuring within my video drivers. I updated them and have had no trouble since.

That mivght be it.. espn.com is my homepage there.. and it has that push motion shit on it, in a video window... maybe thats whats jamming up the works.

plus with all the video advertising out there.. i dont think it handles it so well.

or of course i might have my pipelining set too high.

I have Firefox & Mozilla both on my workstation as well as IE and CrazyBrowser (IE tabbed browsing shell). I like how CB does tabbed browsing better than FF/Moz. I do tend to use IE/CB more than the others still because of CSS support.

I don't know if it's the CSS spec itself or Mozilla's CSS interpretter, but CSS based layout doesn't always display correctly in Mozilla. Nested containers (DIVs) using CSS positioning don't nest correctly.

Wow... we DO go way back, don't we Opti?

You've got to get out here for a conference... I never did meet you face-to-face and we have years to catch up on.

That is so cool that you found that button - lol

OK - that explains some of the things I've been seeing lately. Thanks Venturi.

It's definitely the nesting that I've been having probs with - glad it's not just me.

Really though, this new browser thing has me wanting to go back to school and pick up some new tricks and get some updates on old ways I've been doing things.

<vent>
One thing I will NEVER change though will be the Notepad/Notetab thing. Anyone who has used Notetab knows that for all of the HTML editors out there it seems to be the most hands on for us HTML control freaks. I hate... I hate... I hate Dreamweaver. It screws things up more royally than I'd ever imagined and following someone else who uses it just adds 10x the amount of work when cleaning up pages. It adds so much extraneous code that I just feel like screaming.
</vent>

Some things need to move forward - but sometimes getting back to basics makes a lot more sense.
