I hope they get the relief effort into full swing ASAP, or it might be too late for tens of thousands of people :(

They had a choice whether to buy an early warning system for tsunami's, as they currently have installed in the pacific, they declined to purchase it. It gives anyone living in the Pacific area, a good few hours, advance notification.

Its a nightmare.

Loads of people from my golf club go to Phuket on orgainised "golf trips" once or twice a year.

Fortunately not over the Xmass perios usually.

Even so , I hope they are all safe.

At one point 3 yrs back we were going to go big in Phuket (buy a club/hotel and run guided tours) and send Anthony as our the man there.

Thk fuck we didn't.

The pictures/videos which really get to me is of those who have lost familiy members, and can not find them... I saw that picture of a young swedish boy, who has a small piece of paper, which is saying "missing parents + 2 brothers", and then his name... I cried :cryin:

Yeah that is soooo fucking sad.

They showed a family here at Vancouver airport flying out to try and find them..

These people were so admirable.

They pray for success but feel going and being unsuccessful will at least give them closure.

Yeah when you see big waves your brain tells you that those are going to stop on the beach. That is what waves do.. they roll in and stop on the beach. You know their brains had a hard time processing what was happening. Waves aren't suppose to do that..

Seriously I grew up on an island off the coast of Britain.

Hell ,we'd get freighters washed up on the beach during storms.

Hell you'd see 20 ft waves all the time.

But this one was on a calm sea...and just kept coming.

Do you notice how many people were transfixed by it?

I would have been.

Then you can see them realise the enormity of the situation as the water laps at their ankles and they feel the current/force.

They can hit the United States too:

"The tsunami of 1946 was generated by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in the Aleutian Islands. This tsunami struck the Big Island of Hawaii on April 1st. The tsunami flooded the downtown area of Hilo killing 159 people and causing more than $26 million in damages."

THe date was very unfortunate, people figured the calls of tsunami were a joke.

Also the sudden drop in water level, draining of the harbors and the beaches characteristic of the moments before a tsunami strikes, lured people onto the beaches to investigate, putting them in more danger. Something they believe cause the deaths of many in Sunday's tsunami.

Plus this was interesting:

"Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to notions they possess a "sixth sense" for disasters, experts said Thursday.Sri Lankan wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island's coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found."

My advice...if you live on the West Coast ... buy a dog :)

truly devastating
entire small nations wiped out and some of these survivors will never fully recover....everything they had is totally gone....
