I read it is approaching 45k dead.

The US always helps, we are normally the first and most charitable country. No other country can match the aid we have sent around the world since the 1940s.

It is sadd what happened. The scientists and others knew of the earthquake, there was time to warn people on the beaches, and near the water that the wave was coming - but it did not happen.

Lots of people actually CAME to the sea because word got out about all the wierd movements in the water. :-(
I heard a guy that said on CNN that the US donates less than a tenth of 1% of its wealth to humanitarian Aid....

So the US isn't that charitable according to him

what are your thoughts on this?

as the world leader do we set an example? pay the highest share? or do we just let them sort it out on their own?

Oh and remeber $600m in foriegn aid was given to Pakistan....anyone remember why?

over 2 million homeless they say

What if the 10,000 was no strings attached..nada..

and the Million was to pretty much repair the damage the giver had already cost.

To use Colin's example..

Bill Gates giving a 100m to a lukemia research Hospital. Thats awesome.

However what if Bill , or Gatesy as I like to call him , had in the weeks preceeding found out through his inteligence network , a guy he met in a pub called Mike ,that the hospital in question had without a doubt been manufaturing anthrax to drop on the Microsoft compound.

And in fact a couple of years ago , a guy who may well have been a staff member of that hospital , or at least visited it once, as an outpatient, had indeed , well may have been involved in a people in the compound getting the flu.

So in light of these revelations , Gatesy blew the hospital to Kingdom come.

It was worth around 500m before this.

Additionally Gatesy still has some of his programers staying and overseeing the building of the new hospital despite the fact 87% of the hospital staff want all his people to leave.

;-)))

Nick do you know how large that number is???

What is wealth?

I doubt the CNN guy can list any countries who donate more aid to foreign Nations the past 50 years then the US. He cannot, because no nation exists.

The CNN guy was Jan Egeland, under secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief for the U.N. Basically, he thinks that countries should pay a higher percentage of their "wealth" as they become wealthier. "It bothers me that we -- the rich nations", said Jan "are not becoming more generous the more rich we become." He" ,said Colin "is a commy".

I was watching Nightline last night - apparently the US seismologists called the seismologists where it happened 15 minutes after it happened and it didn't hit land until 2 hours later with some places not getting it for 6 hours. Plenty of time to save thousands :(

As far as the US helping, as Michael said, we have always been there. I've not seen anyone help us with hurricanes, wildfires, WTC (financial help) but we are always there for others. And we're the bad guys.

Who is more charitable, the guy who makes $100 and contributes 10% ($10.00) or the guy who makes $1,000,000 and contributes 1% ($10,000).

If I'm the recipient, I know which contribution I want to receive........

I had 2 points to make. Colin made my first one.

Second, what exactly does this mean: " Official Development Assistance (ODA) from 2000 to 2003 ODA in U.S. Dollars
(Millions) ODA as GNP Percentage "

I have no idea wat officual development assistance is. is it only for development and not hunmanitarian aid? is this only from the gov't and not private sources?

Remember, we still have some rights over our own money as US citizens, the gov't does not tax us 70%. I know for a fact that American citizens out of their OWN pockets donate BILLIONS every year, not only in money, but in time and labor.

There are countless Christian groups who spend their summer/winter vacations going to third world countries and work on building houses, roads, wells, etc... I doubt any of this is even tracked.

It is amazing, we give the world so much, and still have to deal with their shit! It is the price of being the most successfult Nation in the world.

Does the U.S. have an obligation to help? Other than common decency, I don't know of any.

The funny thing about foreign aid in the U.S. is that most often, those who scream the loudest about how much we spend also scream the loudest about how we are spending too much...

HAHA that Jan guy is a commie:

But U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being "stingy" with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised.

I wonder if Jan is giving his salary from the UN to the relief effort.

Mike AI
12-28-2004, 01:29 PM
For you Nick:

In response to Mr. Egeland's comments, Mr. Duffy pointed out that the United States is "the largest contributor to international relief and aid efforts, not only through the government, but through charitable organizations. The American people are very giving."

So I guess you know where to stick that flag?

Nice!!!

When I lived in Manalapan , every freaking night there was a chartiable "do" going on.

By the looks of most I'd say they were hedging their bets in case there was heaven and hell. And seemed to be as desperate as Cartman was when his "Naughty/Nice" list was audited.

I loved the place immensely. :)
