In all the places you have been - what are your top 5 favorite destinations? I am thinking of a trip out of the country next year & could use some suggestions. (or should I ask Lady Law to get the female point of view?)

How tough is the language barrier in a place like Thailand when you get away from the tourist areas?

I've yet to travel anywhere that I didn't speak the native tongue, but of the three languages I speak (4 if you include speaking fluent "gonzo") none of them are likely to do me much good deep in the heart of Asia.

Languages are not a big problem..if you travel with a guide.

Most people in Thailand speak some english.

Can be fun though when they keep saying yes cos they scared to offend you.

or as they say..... no promplem!

Hate the haggling thing though........never was any good at that

I have been thinking about Italy. However, I am not interested in going anyplace when it is cold. A good vacation to me includes shorts..:-)

go on the cruise, Sharpie, go on a cruise!

If weather is your main objective,
you won't enjoy traveling.

In no order
---------------

Cusco, Peru: the people, culture and altitude all make for an incredible experience. Drink the tea when they tell you too. You may get sick, but it is worth it. Listen to the people, they are trustworthy and will help you make your way through the Andes, if that is your destination. I hiked for a week to get to Machu Pichu. It changed me forever.

Buenos Aires, Argentina: Extremely friendly city, latin culture driven with mild European sub-culture. Excellent steak and wine for very low cost. See the Teatro Colon for a breathtaking experience.

Prague: 3rd world, castles, excellent food. Feels at times as though you are in a vampire setting when evening comes.

Bankok, Thailand: Eastern culture but IMO, Asia is not for the first time world traveler. Cab drivers and merchants will take liberties with foreigners. The buddahs are amazing, although some are contrived now in the way that they are solely set up for tourist attractions. Although most will tell you that the outskirts speak english, I do not agree. I stayed in an apartment outside of Bangkok and no one spoke english. I had to communicate with my hands and the cab drivers dropped me off repeatedly in areas that would not appeal to most Americans :) It made for a long day.

Rio, Brazil: Vibrant culture. I get shot down for this, but this is another place I do not suggest for the first time world traveler. Not near as many people speak english as the guides say and portugese is difficult. The ATM machines are known crime havens and most either close at dark or do not accept your card. Crime is overrated and relies on your ability to use common sense (a problem found in Americans). The views are incredible. The Cristo monument was more breathtaking than the Eiffel Tower. I suggest the helicopter ride. Cost is minimal and it offers amazing views.

Amsterdamn: Smoke the herb but be careful, it is potent. See the Ann Frank home. Very moving.

Somewhere warm to wear shorts -- do you mean any time of year or just during a particular season?

Puerta Vallarta is still my favorite destination in Mexico -- it doesn't have the overbuilt touristy feeling of Cancun, there are some lovely restaurants and shops, and plenty of warm weather activities.

St Maarten -- half French, half Dutch, wholly captivating. From the Burger King truck to the 150+ foot yachts that moor in the harbors, the island is truly unique. If you want a two hour lunch followed by a trip to the nude beach, then head for the French side, if you want to gamble there are casinos on the Dutch side.

Turks and Caicos is supposed to be another fantastic trip, and neither that or SMX are too far from you being Caribbean.

My goal next year is to branch out westward, beyond Hawaii -- I think I want to do a bareboat sailing passage around the South Pacific - the Marquesas, Fiji, Tahiti, that neighborhood.

We'll do Japan on an airplane, I don't particularly think you'd want to take the time off to sail all that way, nor do I figure I'm a good enough sailor yet to do it ;-}}}}

Oh, yeah, I missed the sailing part  My brother and I took sailing lessons growing up. We both managed to wreck our boats. I'm sticking with boats/ships with motors :)

In no particular order - they were all great places.

1) St. Petersburg - Was there only 2 days, would have loved to spend more time.
2) London
3) Costa Rica
4) Belize ( the first time I went, I think its gone down hill)
5) Copenhagen. Was fun to go to http://www.tivoligardens.com/ to see what inspired Disney.

2005 I plan on traveling often, including Italy with Serge and LL!!

I too would like to hit Asia. I would love to go to India and China.

Hahaha, it means you pick up the boat in port and sail off to where you want to go, you can opt not to have a crew aboard, so I guess you could be nekkid as much as you wanted if you like ;)
