View Full Version : The Skim!

so...

How does it work these days..

In my old freehost days , we used to "skim" hits , of course.

I created "bannerfree.com" , because..a list with no banners.Awesome!!! hehehehe

No doubt it isn't skimmed though...............now ;-)))

I'd use that traffic as the water to blend in with the meat and noodles from SE and AVS sites.

Back then it was frowned upon. Never got caught of course.

We'd take all aol traffic.

Why? Few if any webhamsters used AOL.

Now I'm told it is totally acceptable practice. You can use the traffic for traffic trades after being filtered round some sponsors etc...

Who wants to educate me and bring me up to 2004/5?

ahahahahahaha first link list owner , TGP owner that says he doesn't skim is due any second....

Oh, the one major problem as i see it, and i could be wrong, is that after a couple of 'skims' you are in effect just recycling the same freeloading surfers around and around the same sites again.

Unless you have a way of breaking off the skim and sending them where you want them to go without your trades knowing about it ;)
elaborate please..?

but instead of just "skimming" the traffic generally wouldn't it be better to filter the traffic so that you control what traffic goes where.

ie...

the traffic is comprised...say

Bookmarkers 5%
SEs 2%
Traffic Trades 83%

then by browser..

by Isp , geographical location etc..

so that you can decide where you send the water , the noodles , or the meat?

Isnt the accepted norm to build traffic these days around the 60-70% figure for skims?

Remember seeing that posted somewhere recently.

Think of the site where you are skimming your traffic as the 'key' to unlock its potential.

You have to maintain a 60% skim in order to keep your highest traffic sending trades going, the othr 40% you have a choice of sending them out to the submitters galleries on your site or, sending them out to alternative sites that YOU own.

Basically as we are putting into practice and testing presently, in order to make any decent amount of residual traffic without using a skim you would need to have trades setup with a minimum of 10 other sites.

10 sites sending traffic to your 'key'
Your 'key' sends 60% of the traffic back to your trades
Your 'key' sends 10% of the traffic to the sites submitted galleries
Your 'key' sends 30% of the traffic to your other [private] 5-10 sites

You always control fully 30% of the traffic, this is the 'good' 30% where you arent fucking around with the surfer by sending them to other trades, etc etc, boomarked freeloaders if you will.

30% of 1k hits each day after a month is a decent amount of traffic to control

;) ;)

Lee

Nick yep, most of the half decent trade scripts around atm will allow you to geo filter the traffic.

There are even a couple that will allow you to filter it based on the referring url.

The problem with such a broad sweeping statement.. google, tgp, skimmed is that for some, google traffic converts less than tgp traffic.

If a webhamster doesnt know how to successfully market most types of traffic they find themselves catering their business to the single traffic source they can successfully market to and, more often than not, this is TGP traffic ;)

Most of the trade scripts are capable of rating the traffic and fluctuating the trade based on that. Running sites based on skim or trades is a very tedious business and I am inclined to think that by the time it gets figured out fully, it will not be viable. That energy could have been focused on more viable avenues of traffic sources.

Of course, I could be very naive. And of course, maybe I did not read the entire thread, once again.

Just my 2 cents nevertheless.
just keep circliung your own traffic back and forth along with your trades and then once those numbers are well puffed up, sell gallery spots for a flat rate
