Balut (Or "Balot") is one of the Philippines' real native culinary delicacy that is sold every where in the streets. It is pretty much a duck abortion. It has to be in the top of some of the most exotic things I have ever eaten in my life. Balot is an aprodhesiac! Of course I had to try it !

What makes balot special is that it is not simply an egg with the white and the yoke. It actually has a half-incubated chick inside it.

Balot is akin to an aprodhesiac; why else would it be sold at night time by wandering salesmen shouting "BA - LUUT!" Of course eggs have that obvious fertility symbolic connection but balut is also considered to be strengthening - providing a burst of protein to replenish lost energy after an amorous encounter... The Filipino equivalent to post loving pizza.

Balut is eaten during the drinking sessions. It is a form of "pulutan" - food eaten when drinking alcohol. Recent studies by scientists confirm the importance of eating high protein foods when drinking alcohol as opposed to sugary or high carbohydrate foods. The visual grossness of Balut might also be stimulating to people lost in a beer haze. Certainly many foreigners need to be in this state before they feel ready to partake of this particular Filipino delicacy.

Filipinos love the shock value of Balot. They take every opportunity to dare foreigners to eat it and consume it teasingly in their presence. I had to try it twice cuase I was smashed the first time........ here are the pictures.....

They were prepared like tv snacks to eat with a drink, somewhat like potato chips.

Yes and no, there's a rainy season of about 4 months when it will rain really hard for one or two hours a day. But it's very hot and it kind of cools the city down, plus it's better cloudy than having full blast tropical sun all day.

1 out of 4 is BS.

1 in 4?

Everyone there has a price......including policemen as Timon will know.

I had a regular taxi driver there..... when i first met him he took great pride in showing me pics of his wife and kids.

Then one night when i was shall we say a little tipsy as we pulled up to Montien Hotel he asked me if i wanted him to come to my room for a massage lol

Needless to say..... i declined.

you take raw pork fat, 1-3 inches of it thick,
put soem garlic and salt and black pepper on the surface and throw it in the freezer.

after 1 month there, you cut it VERY thin and put it on the piece of b;ack bread.
Goes EXCELLENT with vodka and guarantees heart attack before you turn 50

I'm with you Mike. I made the most awesome Alligator Chili a couple of weeks ago.

Where do you get your alligator at?

I have eaten Jelly Fish and Shark's Fin Soup in Hong Kong, but can't come close to some of the bizarre things you guys are talking about, but you are making me hungry.

You offering some? :groucho:

I've eaten chocolate covered grasshoppers, raw oysters, sushi and roe, frog, alligator, lots of different hot sauces and peppers, probably some other things I can't remember

From my perspective none of those compare to eating something that can bleed for 5 days and not die....... :zoinks:

When I was little my Eskimo grandfather was eating a big bowl of freshly picked blueberries with sugar on top. He asked if I wanted a bite. I took a big spoonfull and almost puked. It was "Eskimo ice cream" which is basically seal oil with berries mixed in.

It seriously tasted and smelled like putrid rotten seal assholes or something, ewwwwwww!

You pick what you want to eat like you'd pick a lobster from a tank ;-))
same at the Pelican..all in tanks lots of dhit.

Whats that thing that looks like an Elephants dick called????

Expensive shit , in Chinese restaurants.

But yeah serge , I was not enamoured with ducks tongue.

One of my favourites that I got the usual suspects hooked on is Foie Gras (Unusual to some). Love that shit! :)

I have seen Ant eat 4 orders...for lunch!! :)

I cook it myself now...so easy...so good :) [/b][/quote]
i cook foie gras and eat it nearly raw with a good Sauternes, but i hardly that rates as exotic. Snobby perhaps, but not exotic.

I ate my neighbours pussy once, now does that count?

I eat that all the time, it's delicious, but when I buy it I have to walk home because no taxi driver will let me take it in his cab ;-)

For those of you who have smelled a decaying corpse... that's pretty much what it smells like ;-))
