i've tried trillian and I like it if you have multiple messenger programs to include, but its even more buggy than icq and ads an extra level of bugs ...

for the first few weeks I couldn't figure out why messages were going missing - it puts them into 'docked' windows that you can't find and all sorts of wacky shit like that.

but, if you are having probs with icq, then it will probably be an improvement ...

another really good option if you need to just jump on icq quicky is go.icq.com - its a web based version of icq and pops up a window with icq - i love it for travelling, saves from having to install versions of icq on different pc's

DOS Tip....

If you have AIM... it will connect to ICQ using your UIN and password. They are essentially the same thing!
Thats how I get CJ in my pocket from time to time.

I use Trillian Version 2.01 Pro, and have had no problems.
It does not disconnect/reconnect etc like the stand alone ICQ does at the moment.

(The Pro version is less 'buggy' than the free version, save & except for the small inconvienance of it contacting everyone on your icq list for authorisation the first time you install it - however this *could* be seen as a feature ie you get to talk to peps you may not have touched base with in a while :D )

I've been very happy with Trillian for a long time too.

I switched to trillian a few times, and i did like it, but unfortunately i found alot of my ICQ messages got 'lost' or just didnt get sent, or i didnt recieve them properly. Unfortunately, thats enough of a problem to make me stop using it altogether.

Although I have heard the latest version of trillian is alot better ... Im still skeptical.

Anotehr option is GAIM (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/), one a few people i know have started using, which again combines multiple IM services. Can't vouch for it but give it a go maybe.

The only foolproof alternative is the telephone.... :yowsa:

I've used trillian - liked it.... loved it... hated it... deleted it...

I have ICQ Lite now and REALLY like it because *SO FAR* it hasn't lost any messages, contacts or gotten buggy on me.

We just switched to ICQ Lite on my computer after the latest version of ICQPro (I think) crashed every few minutes/hours, and was never stable. So far... the ICQ Lite has been the model of stability.....MUCH better than what I had before.

No problems with trillian here either. Been using it for a couple of years now. Every few months you can count on it starting to flake out in which case it's time to visit their website and grab the latest patch, but other than that it works great.

And I cant blame them for those bugs, many of the carriers (Yahoo and MSN being the worst) occasionally do stuff to intentially crash out anyone using their network without using their client. When that happens, you're hosed til a patch comes out.
