"Ashcroft, 62, is described as exhausted from leading the Justice Department in fighting the domestic war on terrorism since the September 11, 2001, attacks. Stress was a factor in Ashcroft's health problems earlier this year that resulted in removal of his gall bladder. (Ashcroft in intensive care)

Ashcroft is expected to resign before Bush's January 20 inauguration, said aides who spoke only on condition of anonymity. They said there is a small chance he would stay on, at least for a short time, if Bush asked him.

The attorney general has not officially informed his staff of his future plans, spokesman Mark Corallo said.

At a news conference, Bush said he hasn't made any decisions about his Cabinet.

Ashcroft, a former two-term governor and senator from Missouri, has long been a favorite among Bush's base of religious conservatives. He also is a lightning rod for Democrats and other critics on issues ranging from the anti-terrorism Patriot Act, which expanded rules for eavesdropping, to abortion rights and gun control. (Ashcroft details uses of Patriot Act)

Names that have been floated in recent weeks as a possible replacement include Ashcroft's former deputy, Larry Thompson, who would become the first black attorney general.

Others include Marc Racicot, who was Bush's campaign manager, and White House general counsel Alberto Gonzalez, who would give Bush a notable Hispanic appointment."

Mike, the replacement (maybe Rudy) might be worse.

hahaha. laying the groundwork for 4 more years of doom and gloom, continued anti-US bigotry and relentless criticism of Conservatives/US policies. Bush being re-elected was the best thing that ever happened to you... otherwise, you would be climbing the walls, lost and wondering where to direct your insecurity and paranoia... now the pressure is off and you can go back to your normal routine of explaining to everyone why they are wrong and why they don't "get it"

I don't think it will be Rudy.

Rudy would not be acceptable to Robertson, Reed, et al.

For that reason, I don't think what Alex is suggesting is that far off the mark.

As far as the "zero prosecutions" bullshit that is tossed around by the defenders of the faith - I suspect there are a lot of "zero" items within Justice that might very well have happened had it not been for 9/11.

hahaha, so now he's guilty for what he might have done if he hadn't done what he ended up doing.

No point in any further discussion of the topic:

PD wins, TKO.

Uhh, Buffy.

We are talking about a man who considered a run for the Presidency himself, with an appeal mostly to the religious right.

We are talking about a man who has been castigated by his base in the religious right for failing to prosecute obscenity.

I do not think it is in any way "unfair" to assume that Ashcroft would have made obscenity/pornography a priority had not 9/11 interrupted.

We can argue all day long about what Ashcroft what have done if it were not for 9/11. The good news.... he is out hopefully, and yes there could always be worst, but it would be hard to beat religious-centered Ashcroft.

I don't get the whole "if 9/11 had not happened" argument. It's not like Ashcroft has to take the time to do schlep work. He runs a department with 130,000 employees and $23 billion/year. In the past 4 years he's had access to nearly $100 billion and more than one billion man-hours (no shit)! It's not like Ashcroft and the DOJ have been so busy on terrorism they haven't had time for anything else. They've managed increased attention and resources to online crime and fraud, prison construction, Drug enforcement, and the INS.

Now Ashcroft is retiring. The people who said 4 years ago that Ashcroft would destroy the porn industry were just flat our wrong. Robert Fulghum was right. The little boy who cried wolf and Chicken Little should have taught us well.

What can I say? John Ashcroft is going to retire because he has a massive SRH (Sprem retention headache).

I gues he was a turkey:
