Will Ashcroft go? Will Colin Powell?

Who else will go?

Thoughts on who will replace them?

Powell has been out since his UN speech.

This is off top of my head:

Sec of State: Rice
Sec of Def: McCain
Attorney General: Guiliani

I can see Rice, although I am NOT a fan of hers at all. (I am not a fan of ANY academic (liberal or conservative) who has been National Security Advisor &/or Secretary of State - and I guarantee you that there have been plenty I've agreed with more than I agree with her.) If Bush wants to move toward better relations with the rest of the world, he would do well to appoint a career state department type that the Eurpoeans, in particular, could work with.

I don't know if McCain would want the job. It COULD be a shrewd political move on Bush's part, if he can convice him to take it, because Bush would have the advantage of association with an individual who does have support from people in both parties while (probably) getting a more socially conservative Senator out of Arizona. I hope he stays in the Senate.

Rudy? If the "Hero of 9/11" wants to be remembered as just that, he'd be well advised to stay in the private sector. He was a pretty devisive figure before that. I also doubt that Rudy could pass the Ralph Reid litmus test.

Remember Rudy got his chops as Fed Prosecutor. For future political viability it would probably be wise to for him not to take the job.

I hope Karen Hughes hangs around some, I think she is a good influence on Bush.

I know that Rudy was a prosecutor. I also remember how he was as a mayor before 9/11.

The last thing I want to see is drinking in public, littering, and homelessness become Federal crimes. :D

Seriously - Rudy was a hero on 9/11. He should stay that way.

Rudy's idea of nusance crimes effect major crime has been proved to be pretty effective. He did turn NY around a lot, and yes I was there before, during and after he was mayor.

Sykk - your comment about Karen Hughes makes me want to put ice picks in my eyes!! You are a SICK man! ( I say that with all due respect!)

McCain wont take the position, he is already a reelected senator, i doubt having won that he will drop the post to be secretary of defense. it would not makesense.

he has a better shot at 2008 if he keeps his distance from this administration, after all, it will be a lame duck at some point (3 years, 6 mos), and launching a bid for the white house off of a lame duck year would not seem smart, if those are his ambitions

I would realy realty be happy if condoleeza rice was fired or indicted on something. she is a snake.

Local Fox news last night had analyists on this topic

Out

Colin Powell
John Asshat
Donald Rumsfield

In

Condi Rice to replace Powell or Rummi
Tom Ridge to Replace Ashcroft or Rummi
Guliani to replace Ashcroft or Ridge

Any of these scenerios is better for our business long term

Did somebody on Fox actually suggest that Condi Rice could be secretary of defense? She's marginally qualified for State; I cannot picture her at defense at all.

Gulliani and McCain would have problems becoming the AG ... the thumpers wouldn't approve at all.

Ridge is another prosecutor and a pain in the ass. We were so happy Bush got him out of being Governor here in PA. Eeesh.

One thing about him, he's a hard line law and order muthafucka ... but more on the line of get the Mafia, get the terrorists, get the killers. He hasn't shown any proclivity to go against porn specifically and considers that (in the past) small potatoes not worth his effort.

Another plus, he also can't be swayed by moral majority assholes; in fact the more he's courted or feels pushed by someone he pushes back and goes the other way. He has that "this is my job, don't tell me what to do, slam the door in your face" attitude, playing by his own rules.

Looking like Ashcroft is gone for sure. Hell, he should've used that in the campaign.

Rumsfield likely takes a fall for the war going less than smoothly.

Colin Powell is almost a foregone conclusion.

I also dont think Dick Cheney will go the full 4 years. He's in no shape to run for President in 2008, so it makes sense at some point in mid-term to have him quietly retire due to health concerns and install a VP that will make a suitable candidate to take on the Hildebeast in 2008.

Bush's base wanted Ashcroft. The 1000 +/- pornographers meant less then the millions of "moral" folks :awinky:

I didn't pay attention in most of my government classes - what's the protocol for a new VP mid term?

Ashcroft is a sore point not only for porn lords but also anyone who has concerns about privacy and personal freedoms.

As for replacing a Vice President, that would be covered by the 25th amendment...you must've been out that day....heh.

Basically it works like most other appointments. If there's a vacancy in the VP position, the President nominates a replacement and a majority approval is needed from both the Senate and the House.

Thanks for the info. I strongly believe I should have stayed out of school until I was around 25 and ready to learn. Actually, I kinda did stay out of school just never picked it back up again. :P

Here's a fun fact...

Originally the Vice President was the person who came in second in the Presidential election. Imagine the fun that would be today.

As for learning, the problem with waiting until you're 25 is you'd quickly realize how bad and out of touch many teachers are. You'd talk back and have to spend time in detention. :biglaugh:
