Mike you throw that word 'liberal' around a lot.
What is the problem with being a liberal? I've noticed even Kerry stays away from that word, and he tends to try to let people know he isn't liberal.

What is the big deal?

There are many pejoratives in politics and on all sides of the fence. "Liberal", "pinko", "bible thumper", "neocon". What's the big deal? Nothing at all. Same old, same old.

Nah that is not true Colin.

Bush calls himself a conservative all the time. He does not hide from the word.

Kerry would never refer to himself as liberal, because he knows he would drop 10 points in the poll and be blown out.

Liberal democrats have to run as moderate's and populists to get any national votes. Clinton is pretty much the prototype.

There is a difference between the 2. Then I guess we would have to have Kerry refer to himself as a humanist.

Bush is clear on his religious beleifs, he does not hide from them.

The reality is in the United States in 2004 people are more comfortable with a bible thumber, then a international liberal humanist. That is why Kerry does well on the coasts and in urban areas.... Fortunately most of the "fly-over" space in the US still beleives in God.

See, I think the term liberal has become a pejorative through it's negative use.

"How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must)"
"Saving America from the Liberal Assault on Our Schools, Faith, and Military"
"How Gay Activists and Liberal Judges Are Trashing Democracy"

This has happened in other times and places. In the nineteenth century in some european countries for example.

I wonder if Bush would call himself "right-wing".

You are liberal in many ways Mike, but you wouldn't call yourself that. ;-)

I've realized that these labels aren't so important to us up north.
Liberal, Conservative, New Democrat...

Actually, most Canadians still associate the New Democratic party with socialism.

Nothing wrong with being penned a Liberal, though. Not in my opinion anyway.
I do see your point however, Colin. I also have noticed the negative connotations surrounding the word.

I see Canadians using pejoratives in reference to American politicians every day.

If I were to chose a word of the day I would pick "floresiensis" today.

Colin, I definately have some liberal ideas. I am basicly a Libertarian.

In a literal sense it is Bush who is the liberal/progressive, and Kerry is the conservative.

Bush changed the nations foreign policy that had been in effect for decades. Policy of containment was turned into a policy of pre-emption. Kerry is for containment, and alliance building.

Bush's plans for Social Security is also very progress/liberal. He wants to change it up drasticly, privatizing part and basicly bringing it up the modern world. This is a bold policy stance. Kerry wants to keep the same original social security system.

I am comfortable being right wing, and liberal all at the same time...

As Chris Rock said, "I’ve got some shit I’m conservative about, I got some shit I’m liberal about. Crime, I’m conservative..... (pause) .... Prostitution, I’m liberal".
