One of our members on GWW has a site listed there and its killing him.

Anyone know a good way to stop this?

Like is there a .htaccess solution or something 'cheap' he can do to stop users getting access?

I don't think you can block them copying your site and still allow members to view it.. RawAlex knows information about the UK source and has some tips to make life for the automated content collection spider they use harder Ive seen him post before.

I'm positive Germany is covered by the Euro version of the DMA. And I know Germany is not lax on punishment. Might be easier to close than you think. I'm sure someone knows the right EU enforcement agency to contact.

Opti, my standard tips are this:

On every page of your members site, put any number of hidden links that actually end up calling a cgi that spews endless amounts of crap back to the bots. Have it send source code for unix, it doesn't matter. If it requests a jpg, return a jpg header and then spew away at them.

Put enough of these landmines on your site, and they will be much less likely to want to spider your site. make sure the links are not visible to the human eye, just to the bots.

No fear of confusing googlebot, it should never be inside your site.

Once the horse is out of the barn with those, you cant bring it back. The files dont exist on any one server or computer. It's multisourced p2p, the site listed just has the seeds.

So..

This guy we have on GWW with a site listed on there..

He is going to have to do what to stop it? Change host? Domain?

If it's on bit torrent, they've already ripped it and it's scattered across computers all over the net. If anyone else wants it, all they need is the seed from someone who already has it to be able to tap it and suck it down from sources all over the net. A site like the one above just posting the seed and not the actual content likely cant be shut down either.

DRM is likely the only thing that can totally secure content....at least until that gets cracked too.

Content thieves are no different from a burglar. There's nothing you can do to be 100% secured, a clever thief will always get in and get what he wants. However, you can take steps to make it enough of a pain in the ass that they go onto the next guy and leave you alone.

Tools like Pennywize can restrict the number of bytes a user can get per session. This will effectively make it a pain for them to rip the whole site at least and force 'em to take smaller bites.

lee, they downloaded the site, then make the content into a file. They are not connecting to his domain anymore, they are distributing the content, not the password. With the speed of downloads these days, you can download a movie in a couple of hours (less if you accept it in DivX or other compressed formats). They are taking all of the content, and turinng it into a big downloadable file. Where the file is would be anyone's guess.

Beside protection of content, sites, servers etc. then have the lawyers contact his host in Germany - could also check if his whois is correct, if it is false then report it to icann. Last resort - since he is located in Russia, then its easy and cheap to hire local help, which can meet with him and explain the situation :awinky:
