View Full Version : Family Tragedy?

My daughter has meet a very nice young man. They appear to be getting serious.

He is polite, articulate, intelligent, educated, gainfully employed, has no tattoos with misspellings, appears to have all of his teeth, treats her very well, treats her son very well, treats his kids very well, and doesn't believe in the designated hitter.

Still, I worry about this one. He's a Cubs fan.

His football allegience is also questionable - he's a fan of the Dolphins - but I can live with that. After all, it's not the Cowboys.

I am from St. Louis. I am a Cardinals fan. Had I been blessed with three boys instead of three girls, I would have named them Stan (Muscial), Lou (Brock), and Bob (Gibson). I would not have objected if my daughter had wanted to name her son Ozzie (Smith). When asked why I used to take off work and pull the girls out of school to attend the first day baseball game, I would always tell people it was a family religious tradition - and I was only mostly kidding.

Can a mixed relationship like this survive?

see this post

adjust accordingly , ie change allegiance or...etc etc ;-) (http://www.oprano.com/msgboard/index.php?act=ST&f=1&t=14061&st=0#entry172729)

it'd be a variation but it would work

;-)))

Damn. That's gonna be hard to live with. Look at it this way -- at least you'll never have to worry about him rubbing it in that the Cubs won the World Series -- cuz it will never happen!

What would be worse for ya? A Cubs fan or a Republican?

Well - because your team is better you can get much enjoyment by tormenting him. If it was the other way around I would say that it could never work!

I have a daughter who is a Republican. While I am sorry that I failed her in that way, I can accept that.

This is much more serious.

Funny. Was your father a Democrat?

Nominally.

Dad was an almost stereotypical WWII vet who believed in Roosevelt and supported Truman, but I suspect that Kennedy was the only Democrat he supported for President after that. He hated Nixon, but I suspect he voted for him in '68, although he may very well have voted for Wallace.

His father was a rock-solid Republican who believed that Roosevelt started America down the path to socialism.

Grandpa was also somewhat unstable when it came to important things, like baseball. He was a fan of the Baltimore Orioles, although he never quite forgave them for leaving St. Louis (the Orioles had been the St. Louis Browns).

Sounds like my grandfather who is getting ready for heart surgery in a few weeks. He has proclaimed he just wants to live long enough to vote for Bush.

Mixed families can survive.

We have:

2 University of TN grads
3 University of GA Grads
1 Florida State grad who cheers for FSU
1 Florida State grad who cheers for University of FL

It's not pretty during college football season....

I think you're faced with serious issues. I am a product of a mixed marriage...me being a die hard Yankees fan and my husband being a....forgive me for even uttering the name....Mariners fan.

It's been hell.

Since the Rams nor the Dolphins have a chance of winning much of anything this year, I think you've got some time to see how things develop.

The guy has already demonstrated he's smarter than you, has better judgement than you, and more character than you by being a Cubs fan so you should have no worries that your daughter won't be treated well.
