later this year I want to take PJ to New Orleans. I'm not much for crowds. We want to explore downtown but I was wondering if there was a romantic place outside downtown. Something quiet, old southern style.
Something that would be perfect for us would be renting a houseboat and exloring the river or the swamps then creeping into the city to listen to some good music and eat some good food.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
DV

If you want to go to New Orleans go to New Orleans.
If you want something more rustic, outdoors, etc... you need to get out of the city. I have no idea where you could rent a house boat, and tool around the marsh/river.
There are plenty of things to do outdoors in Louisiana - La is not called "Sportsman's Paradise" for nothing.

She wants to go to New Orleans. I want rustic and outdoors. I thought we could do both in one trip. That's all.

Spend a few days in the French Quarter, then a few days somewhere rustic. I know there are some B&Bs that might fit the bill, including some Plantations.
I know in Lafraniere State park there are camps on the water you can rent.... probably a lot of places like that. Look it up online. I can give you feedback on specific places....

That sounds good. The plantation B&B's sound nice. I'll check out that state park. how far is that from NO?
Thanks,

yes, thank you. I went there and got some good info.
One last question- when is the best time to go to NO when it's not crazy. When does it start to cool down?
Thanks again,
DV

I have to chime in because I love New Orleans.
The culture, food, drink, sights, activities. Just awesome.
Being carried out of Pat O'Brians after half a dozen hurricanes.
good times... good times... B)

Chris long time no see you down here : )
New Orleans/The French Quarter is my favorite city in the world
Dedicated to hedonism
the finest dining, shopping and drinking just about 24 hours per day
Even though I have no seen every major city in the world anywhere would be very hard pressed to have as many incredible dining experiences in such a small area as the French Quarter
But you have to fall in with the locals and disregard the tourist
Plus NO is very gay/lesbian oriented/friendly - all lifestyles welcome (except by drunk frat boys on Friday/Saturday nights)

Thank you all.
I'm sure it has great culture and a bit on the exotic.... many parts of Florida have that as well. I've travelled a lot. For some reason I've never been that drawn but PJ really wants to go and I do love good food!
I'm more drawn to the outdoors; camping, fishing, hanging out in the woods. I spent many years in 4 inch heels. Now you gotta beat my cowboy boots off.
I'm going to check it all out. Sounds like Nov, before turkey day is a good time.

Is that Shogun the chain or an independent restaurant?
We used to go to the this AWESOME place over on Buford Hwy for sushi but the last time we went a couple of years ago they had been closed down by the health department. Not always a glowing recommendation :(
The place here in town isn't too bad and it's easy on the mileage :okthumb:
