View Full Version : Some days just suck.

So, I'm sitting here at my desk looking at my "todo" list and realizing that it just doesn't matter. I have been working on the same database effort for 3 years now. It is slow and go, always, because of constant interruptions and constant fires to put out. The definition of the system is still "If I can think it, I want it to do it" which sucks as a definition. I have managed to automate a good portion of the system. I have managed to bring over 2/3's of our clients into the master database system with well over 90% of all processes being handled automatically. But it looks like we will never get to finish because the head asshole has decided that he can't sell the system anymore and now he wants to go out and sell the next picture in his head. He had agreed, when he last brought this up several months ago, to wait until we had a signed contract before developing the newest variation on his thoughts but now it looks like he does not want to wait until we have money coming in for it and instead wants us to switch focus right now and get to work on it.

You know, it sucks to never be able to complete a fucking project. Makes you feel like a failure coonstantly. It isn't that I don't have the skills or drive to bring it to fruition, it is the constant changing of priorities that keep things from getting finished. It seems to be a constant death march.

Worse yet is that it spills over to the rest of my life. I start working on my personal projects or contract projects and start feeling guilty that I am not working on the system here. I mean, after all, how can I be giving attention to those projects when this one isn't done. From there it becomes a domino effect, I start feeling guilty if I post on the boards because afterall, I should be working on the system or working on a contract project or whatever. Add into that that Jen needs attention from me for paper jewels/weekend jewelry in order to get her new wholesale version up. So, I end up feeling pretty much like a failure :(

29 domains, over 100K images available and nothing happening :(

fuck fuck fuck. I think I'll go home and go back to bed.

Actually that sounds pretty good :)

Haven't gotten to do any camping/fishing/outdorrs shit all this year. I imagine the lunker Bass are just about ready to be pulled out. Ya know the ones that get that big old belly in the Fall.

Purple worms I tell you, thats the secret to the whole mess. Purple worms :okthumb:

Short version (and nothing you don't know already)
Too much on your plate (like everyone else)

Prioritize - usually by what will make the most $ in the shortest time
Then that will allow you the time/resources to do other things you want or at least get to the other things

Yep you're going to get frustrated sometimes, it sucks

or as a very wise Russian-Born American once told me
"I can only sleep in one bed at a time"

or something very much like that

Vick that is an excellent point.

I myself have bitten off more then I can chew many times. One thing I am trying to do now is focus on my core, and stop coming up with tons of new different projects.

I am very good at coming up with money making ideas, my problem is always implementation. Fortunately for me I have been surrounded by some great "doers" who make things happen.

Staying focused is important.

Sarattah - take a deep breath, walk away for a little bit, and clear your head. You will be fine!

Sare, in addition to Vick's good advice, I think it's also a matter of POV or mindset.

There's a saying with movie actors, that they don't get paid to act. They get paid to wait around. The acting they'd do for free anyhow.

So maybe for your job stuff, change your mindset -- that you're not being paid to complete projects, you're being paid to code. And save the completing projects for your clients and yourself. :)

Just my two cents.

Hey, I'll go check my email then. :)

Btw, need to talk to you about that "other project" as well. :)

Anyways, sounds like you're in better spirits today! Glad to hear it.
