I'm not going to be an idiot and try and give you odds on his safety ... understand how you feel completely. My girlfriend's son has already been twice, and figures he'll be back again within a year or so of completing the school he's currently in.

What's he on?

sarettah,

May your son find his way home safely. I'm sure he will.

Thanx for the thoughts folks. Really. His being in the Gulf came as kind of a shock to me. I knew that he had gotten underway for points unknown a couple of weeks back. Since he is based out of Japan, I figured that he was somewhere over in the Pacific yet (last time they deployed under a veil of secrecy, they went to East Timor). I did not know that they had brought the Pac Fleet into the gulf.

Anyway, hopefully he will stay safe and be out of there by December when he rotates to his next ship out of San Diego. He says that he does not think that he will end up back in the gulf at that point becasuse the ship he will be going to is in the gulf right now and should be back in San Diego by the time e reports next March. (Leaves current ship in December then has several schools and goes to San Diego in March)

PD, he is on the Juneau:

"The USS JUNEAU (LPD 10) is an AUSTIN Class Transport Dock ship. This class of ship is in principal a combination of three other types of amphibious ships: the LSD (Dock Landing Ship), the APA (Attack Personnel Transport) and the LKA (Amphibious Cargo Ship). The features which these ships passed along to the LPD include the well deck and flight deck from the LSD, the troop carrying capacity of the APA, and the cargo handling and stowage capability of the LKA. In addition, JUNEAU is configured as a flagship to support an Amphibious Task Force Commander and Landing Force Commander. In an amphibious assault, JUNEAU would normally function as the Primary Control Ship (PCS) and be responsible for coordinating boat waves and vectoring landing craft to the beach. "

What I'm wondering is why the hell the Pac Fleet is in the gulf. Who is watching North Korea's ass ?

Thanx for the thoughts Danny :okthumb:

JUNEAU? Why, yes, as a matter of fact I do. :) My last duty station in the Navy was in a Tactical Air Control Squadron - we provided the air traffic controllers and forward fire control observers for the games the gators play.

My girlfriend's son was deployed on the USS Peleliu on 9/11 ... didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out where he was going.

Pacific Fleet's been going to the gulf for a long time now ... probably since the Iran hostage situation, and definitely since Iraq I.

I did not know that. I would have thought that we would keep enough stuff closer by, like in the Med or the East Atlantic to cover the situation.

Thats what I get for never getting on a ship during my 8 years in the Navy...lololol

They try and keep forces on both sides ... the Atlantic/Med fleet to the west of them, the Pac fleet to the east.

9 years, 5 months, and 22 days and neither was I. Flew over a lot of them, but most of those were Russian.

Believe it or not...this is the transcript of an actual radio conversation between a US naval ship and Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October 1995. The Radio conversation was released by the Chief of Naval Operations on Oct. 10, 1995.

US Ship: Please divert your course 0.5 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

CND reply: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

US Ship: This is the Captain of a US Navy Ship. I say again, divert your course.

CND reply: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course!

US Ship: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS NIMITZ, WE ARE A LARGE WARSHIP OF THE US NAVY. DIVERT YOUR COURSE NOW!!

CND reply: This is a lighthouse. Your call.
