Woody Allen Joins Anti-Bush Bandwagon
Actor/director Woody Allen blasted US president George W Bush when he collected his lifetime achievement award at Spain's San Sebastian film festival on Friday. Allen - who is currently shooting an untitled movie in London - insisted it would be "tragic" if Bush was re-elected in November. He says, "If you observe (Bush), it's quite amusing. If you listen to him as he speaks, if you follow him closely, it would provide you a great many laughs. But it's the perfect example of islands of comedy, comic moments against a very, very tragic background." Allen's criticism comes after directors Jonathan Demme and Wim Wenders condemned the state of American politics at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month.

To think the neocon's had a do good mentality or thought they could fix everything is naive...like everyone else, they had an agenda and they're getting it . I assure you, their agenda doesn't include you.

Look at the other nitwits in porn who buy into everything this administration does & find a justification for it...you said you don't even like prodigal son.

They're going to fuck you, me & anyone else in this as soon as they can. They killed thousands for a "do good" agenda. It really isn't a debate. People have been slaughtered in the hopes of this quagmire that georgie jr started for nothing and the man that caused 3K of our people to die is running free...

Think about it - who's getting rich and who's dying over "misinformation" and agendas. It's not really very complicated. I hate liberal hippie's with a passion but the writing is on the fucking wall.

We've seen what the prodigal son will do...and it aint good - terrorism is on the rise - they lied yet again and said it was on the decline...he's given every gutter camel jockey the reason to islamasize everything we do and in the same time we've forgotten about the man and group that caused this but that's OK - because they "might or could" do something. Put the patriotism aside.

We don't even have enough troups in afghanistan to assure democratic elections...why? They're killing people in Iraq and Saudi Arabia on an almost daily basis - we gave these fuckers a breeding ground to draw more in. How do you think we're going to make Iraq a democracy...make it free - car bombs and beheadings are daily events.

I disagree with most of your post.

I do think we should have a much larger military. It should be brought up to pre-Clinton levels, though it should not be heavy units but rather rapid response, and specialized units.

We will not be safe here, or anywhere until the islamicist movement is destroyed. There will have to be a multi-prong approach. Military options are only short term stop gap solutions. The only things that will protect us in the long wrong is to defeat the ideas of the islamacists - and this must be done by other muslim/arabs. They must be brought into the global economy, so the average kid can have something to dream about, something to aspire to - rather then straping explosives to himself and blowing up a bunch of civilians at a coffee shop.

This war like the cold war, and other movements will last decades, there is not easy victory or short term solution. I think the Bush camp understand this better then the Kerry camp - and thus my support goes to Bush.

You think we are unsafe now - vote for Kerry, let him pull our troops out of Iraq, and try to coddle terrorists groups and states that support them.

Islamacists think the US is weak, will run from conflcit, will not sustain bloody conflicts. They have seen it first hand since Vietnam. Somolia is their textbook.

We need to reorginize our military and intelligene apperatus as well as the State Department to specificlly fight this type of war.

This will be picked up when I get back...but before I head out - a little clue, this isn't the cold war..the Russians weren't willing to die for a theological ideal - making comparison's between the two is asinine. Evangelical Xtians who are guided by the scripture Vs radical muslims.

Why didn't we invade Iran...they're on their way to nukes & openly support Hezbollah? We invaded Iraq - an insignificant entity.

I was comapiring to cold war only to point out the time frame. It took 50+ years to defeat the commies. We did not have much combat during this time. Obviously with our current conflict we will need more combat.

You are correct the Russians were not suicidal, thus containment and isolation was a good strategy.

I agree about Iran. Iraq was an easierr target. Think of where US forces now are, and look where Iran is. I would like to think there is a larger strategy. I hope so for our sake. But since I am not invited not national security meetings I am not sure.

I am not invited to National Security Council meetings either, but what I have seen so far suggests a strategy based on an ology - theology, ideology, perhaps both - that has a serious disconnect from reality. The mere fact that we took on the nation-building project in Iraq before the job was done in Afghanistan suggests that the planning department has little understanding of the battle we are fighting. The failure to adequately prepare for the occupation of Iraq is even more evidence that the man at the helm doesn't know how to read a chart.

An Afghani terrorized by a warlord or a druglord is easy prey for Taliban-like rhetoric. An Iraqi living in chaos without the prospect of gainful employment can easilly be persuaded that it is the fault of the Great Satan.

I am a believer in bleeding hearts when it comes to Islamic terrorists - I believe we should make their hearts (and asses and heads and any other body part we can sink a bullet into) bleed until they stop drawing breath. What I am concerned about, however, is the tendency of the right to grasp onto simple solutions to complex problems.

The problem of Islamic terrorists is not very different than the problem of communists 50 years ago. There is, of course, a dedicated cadre of true believers who would love to turn a Taliban-style government loose on the world. Then there are those who grasp onto Islamic fundamentalism as the only POLITICAL option open to them. Failure to distinguish between the two, and the failure to ween the one away from the other, is a sure way to LOSE this war.

Hoping there's a larger strategy is a bit on the "faith" side. I'm too much of a cynic when it comes to politicians and this administration has spun enough BS about their entire fuckups so as to not really leave much room for "faith" in their strategy or judgements. It's comical to watch dynamic dickwads flat out contradict even their own administration's reports.

At this point, a chipmunk would be preferable.

One major difference I can see between the Cold War and the "War on Terror" is the cold war was "won" economically, we simply out spent them for decades eventually bankrupting the Soviet Union.

The only way to do economic damage is to eliminate the dependency on Oil (which is never going to happen with an administration full of "Oil People")

We can not possibly eliminate "terrorists" with armies, you can not kill into submission an enemy that defines death as a victory. Isreal has been trying for decades.

No matter how many pipe dreams we have about "stabalizing the Middle East" that ain't gonna happen either, it has been an unstable war zone for a thousand years before the US existed.

I fully supported the Afgan War - our attackers were there.

I supported the war in Iraq when the government said there were WMD's - I wanted us find them so we could say FU to the UN, and everyone that voted against us.

Unfortunately, the only proof I have seen is that the adminstration lied about Iraq no doubt about it. No WMD's - NO THREAT to the US at all.

Every reason I have seen anyone give (politicians, and those of us who play politics on Adult message boards) for justification of the Iraq war is either bullshit (by the politicians) or a matter of being unwilling to admit we were lied to.

I just don't think our men and women should be dying in the desert to try and justify a lie.

I havent seen you say this type of thing much.. it's an area that Bush seems to talk about but actually ignores in his actions. If it appeared he had a strategy for this.. and was making some progress, then the rest of your arguments about having faith in Bush for the long term would be easier to take on board I think.

I agree. The Bush plan has not been as effective as it should be. I think he put the cart before the ox in many instances. Military force is needed, and should be used but there is a lot more that needs to be done.

I read an interview where Saddam was saying he did what he did for the public good, for the welfare of his country. In a way he might have. Maybe the only way to run an arab country is by violence and fear. Saddam certainly kept people in line.

One thing Kerry will have to deal with if he wins... is the enevitable dissapointment anti-war supporters are going to feel when reality sinks in that he has to make decisons based on more than making them feel good about themselves.

How to fix Iraq politics?!.. sheesh.. even before the war I wouldnt be surprised if Bush didn't agree Saddam had managed to control the uncontrollable for an amazing length of time. There may not be a way without a warlord dictator to suppress the tribes.

Pure brutal logic would say, with hindsight, that we would have been far better to have left the Iraqi people suppressed in a non islamic extremist state... and keep a thumb on their dictator by stringing out the 1st iraq process indefinitely.. hard to go back and intentionally do that now though :\

You may be completely correct on this one, but I would not generalize "Arab Country"

The people have lived under dictatorship and strict religous doctrin for so long it may very well take decades for them to be a "democracy".

It also does not help that a large number of the people have been taught from birth that America is "The Great Satan"

I think there are 2 choices to the mess

Leave it alone and get the hell out of there OR

Start eliminating entire cities of people (which make us the same as what we "liberated" them from.
