Not yet, but they are capable of talking.

We are still getting him introduced to the house. :)

was tempted to bring home this guy from the bird show:

But Greys are expensive and take a lot more time than we have available.

Gorgeous bird - congrats! :okthumb:

We never progressed past Zebra Finches... always wanted one that could talk, but like you said, you have to have the time to dedicate to them... maybe one day when the kids move out... *sigh*

So how long do you have to wait before it gets large enough to pluck and fry?

lol...well they are all noisy, they like to express their personality :)

If you were going to do a big bird, the time is now. Many of those suckers live 75-100 years so you are at the right age to get one and have a companion the rest of your life.

Two words Peaches:

Bird Show.

You can get a bird through a breeder at a show at a much lower price than you will find one in the pet stores. Plus they usually give a better guarantee on the health of the bird and some other bennies.

In our case, we got Zini for $350. The price at any of the petstores for a sun conure is about $500.

We bought Zini from our vet, she and a partner hand feed and raise the chicks. She givea a 30 day guarantee on the health of the bird, a free starter pack of the same food and seed the baby was weaned on and free clippings and trimmings for a year. On top of that, Julie, the girl that actually does the feeding and raising gave us her home number and told us to call any time 24/7 if there was the least little problem.

We've got a African Grey who is almost 4 now (we've had him since he was 4 months old)
He is really something, vocabulary of about 150 phrases
He and my 3 year young son Sebastian having conversations are very funny

Hugo (the grey) see food and says "Food'
"Hey who let the bird out"
"Where's Sebastian?, where's the little boy?"

and the reason he is not an office bird any more is because he picked up
"Fucking Bullshit" (wonder where he learned that phrase)

Hugo's favorite football team is the Raven's (too bad he doesn't get to say "Touchdown Ravens" often)

he tells our other bird (Bogart who is an Amazon) to "Be Quiet" when he start squawking

the things Hugo says in context are really amazing
He will tell you "goodnight, I love you" when the lights go out and will tell Sebastian to "go to sleep"

Usually grey's are not affectionate and can be nippy but Hugo isn't bad at all even though he has his moments

Parrots weight less than a pound in most cases

except Macaws which are roasted and eaten by South Americans

if I recall correctly the Cockatoo on Baretta was called Fred and was a Sulfur-Crested Cockatoo

Cockatoo's are not notoriously good talkers, not due to ability or intellect but their nasal sound

Cockatoo's are usually very affectionate birds but can get VERY loud
