The oldest domain I know of, and certainly the oldest at oprano, Gonzo.com turned 11 on the 9th August!!!

Happy Birthday Gonzo.com!!

Who ya reckon showed him how to get it?

I have him beat by a few months, but he definitely has the better domain. I still have my old BBS domain for sentimental reasons, not currently using it for anything other than routing 11 year old email addresses for old friends. datadim.com is a few months older than gonzo.com....but they were hanging out together long before 1993.

And at least once a month we kick each other in the ass for not grabbing a ton of porn domains back then.

Wanna know what's worse? At that time, they were FREE. That's right, no annual fee at all. But the problem was the nic wouldn't give you a domain unless you have domain services for it, and as simple as that seems now, finding someone who would sell you DNS services back then was a major pain. And the idea that you might want more than one domain name was totally foreign to everyone. This was during the period where the internet was still very much dominated by universities and their admins, the business people had not yet invaded.

Ah, the Dark Years before time began ... The best (and usually only thing) one could do was get www.isp.com/~yourname/

Hehe... Ed Hopper? Robert Vostreys?
Nope and we should have bought atlanta.com when we were discussing it. We need a big old bday party for some of them old timer domains maybe next year in August. I know CJ's is around that time as well as mine.

Can we count uucp bang path addressing? If so I we can roll that back 2 years prior to when I was going thru emory.edu via cowpas....

What a fucking mess that was back then. Who'dathunk that a 99 dollar investment into a message tossing utility would lead to this 11 years later?

Ill go one further. HP got fucked out of a domain name that was 3 letters! Thats the royal flush now adays. Anything 3 letters whips ass.

I reckon I outta celebrate and assemble its birthday present that our Fat Fucking Designer made for it since is all growed up now. Billing has turned into such a giant nightmare its the only reason I hesitate.

I dunno.... what do you think Fatbaby? Should I go fax you this paper work and say FUCK VISA and push it thru 123bill?

yeah 3 letter domains are almost all long gone - but there's always some stupid combinations coming up on expired lists

i have a 4 letter domain, which is no biggie but i bought it just for the sake of having 1 that was that short ... its div8.com which is really easy to brand.

HP, sorry for giving gonzo.com the 'opranos oldest domain' title - why don't we make it the FFN award instead LOL

by the way, FFN :okthumb: :okthumb: :okthumb:
very impressed with your FFD's work

I still kick myself for not listening to Rick back in the day. I was ignorant and brash....

I think of all the domains I could have picked up.

Oh well. Live and learn.

I still pickup good domains today - both new and old... but its frustrating getting some of the old ones - the counter offers are sometime insane - ex. the other day I offered $4,000.00 for a domain with potential, which was/is non-developed, counter offer was $15.000.000 (no, this domain was not up in that range), and I tought he must be joking, so I forgot about it, then 5 days later I got a new counter offer for $10.000.000 :headwall:

Less frustrating paying $6.30 for a new domain :)

I think a lot of us fall into that boat...

1997 was a bit of a frustrating time for domains. NetSol was the only game in town, they wanted $70 to register (which included 2 years), but they would bill you. So you had to compete with twits who would buy every domain in sight and then try to sell it at a markup before the invoice went so overdue that Netsol would finally kill it and release it.

Nooo - they wanted $100 back then!

But it was funny about them billing you - I had forgotten about that :)

Twits!??! LOL.. I think you could include most of the big e-realestate owners of today in that group.
