Woke up this morning to a message that said one of my folders was corrupt and unreadable, and everything in that folder is gone and to run the Chkdisk utility. I assume they are talking about defragging correct? Would a system restore help as well?

Run Chkdisk and it will try and correct the errors on the drive.

Defrag will put everything on the drive in order but if the data is bad that won't fix it. Usually you would run a utility like chkdisk to fix drive errors before you defrag and start moving data around on the drive.

System restore normally just replaces the current system files with one that worked in the past.. again that wouldn't likely fix your problem.

Chkdisk will probably fix the problem.

Ok.. I ran it (was adding an I rather than just chkdsk) but the folder is still unaccessible and the files gone? Now what?

Start >> Run >> CHKDSK.exe

Nevermind...didn't see you had already run it. You could try restoring your PC to an earlier date. Like yesterday or something before you were having problems.

Gonna try all that stuff right now. I'm hoping I can recover it. Ran with the chkdsk cause that's what the computer told me to do and there was a whole lot of stuff in that folder and it was getting rather large.

Got blue screened when trying to do a system restore and when the computer rebooted it ran chkdsk and it seems to have solved the problem.
