Misawa Japan

CT called this AM - he's going to be stationed in Misawa Japan! :zoinks:

I am THRILLED because this is going to be such a cool experience for him but needless to say a little sad because I won't be a few hours away for visiting :(

Has anyone been there? In reading up on things it's in the Northern part of Japan and they have winter sports which I know he'll LOVE - and of course all the sushi he can eat. It's an hour away from Tokyo by plane, 3 hours by train.

He doesn't leave until next spring so I can still mother him to death between now and then :awinky:

Yeah, he REALLY wanted to go overseas and in fact had gone in today to change all his preferences to overseas bases. Being young and single is perfect for seeing the world on the government's dollar :)

His AFSC is Ground Radio Communications.

What's interesting is that apparently this is the only base in the pacific that has four military branches on it :)

He will still more than likely be deployed at least once during his time to one of the "sandbox" countries, but I'll worry about that when the time comes. :(

of things he can tell CT to avoid... lol

Joint service bases can be a very nice tour/station, sounds like he got a good one!

Great base.

I've been a couple of times. Lived in Sasebo for awhile as well as just outside of Tokyo.

Have CT give me a shout - xmas would be a good time to get him Japanese language tapes ....... will make life soo much easier for him.

What airline? From what I can tell Delta only has 1st on the first leg - from stateside to Tokyo is business. And THAT'S almost $7K!! :o

It's cheaper to buy 3 coach seats at $866 each and stretch out. :P

I've read they come and touch your hair if you're blonde...... :unsure:

Melissa - do you think the tapes will do any good or will he better off just learning off the streets (and TV)?

The tapes would help him make sense of what he hears on the street/TV/etc. Wish I'd taken the time to do that.

Totally - it will give him a head start and make the whole process much easier. But get the whole submersion kind - ideally with something that he can begin to recogize some of the words in print.

Please they don't do that anymore there are more Blonde Japanesse then there are here. Besides American's are common place. Most Japanese speak english to some degree.
Military doesn't have the best rep in Japan --- few bad apples so around bases they tend to be a little more wary, but by making the effort to learn their language you seem to get do much better, taxi drivers don't screw you, bar keeps do better.

I hope he likes Karioke....

Peaches don't you have affiliates in Japan you need to see??? Shouldn't this be a business expense?
