OK, here's what's up.
I started a themed party a while back, pimp and ho. Did a format that worked for that type of theme.
I'd like to branch out into other themes.
Knowing that there's a huge interest in entertaining the more mature webmasters, bigger players and people who just don't like hip hop, we're gonna cater to you.
I'm brainstorming, nothing official, but I think it's worth trying. Shit, I've grown up too, but I still love the Players Ball stuff and feel like expending.
So, KB and I will go live in a few minutes in video with audio and we'll discuss the options. No live chat room, just this thread. Gonna think some ideas, then post the link.
Feel free to get more input on specifics in this thread.
If we do rock, who would you want to see?
If we do DJ's, name some that you think webmasters would enjoy. No hip hop ideas, that's the Players Ball. I'm thinking of doing a new thing with a new theme.
I also will have private areas for talking, no music or low music areas.
Let's see some ideas int his thread. Digweed, Oakenfold, Sasha? QBert? Apollo? Name the DJ you think would be a nice vibe.
Cheap Trick? Blues Traveler? Kid Rock? BB King? Donna Summer? I need suggestions more then rough ideas. Let's hear it.

WOW D-Money - you have evolved.......
I know that trying to find different talent is going to be a whole lot more trouble for you. I am not sure how it would all turn out, because there is a whole crop of webmasters who do like the Players Ball like it is...... but, I don't think it is the real biz people. For many of them, it was fun - but, like many things, the novelity has worn off.
It all comes down to monetory support..... I for one would like to have a quieter type thing (like the PHB) - but you have to go where the support is!
Congratulations on having an open mind:-) I hope you find the Sponsors you need to make this a 'new happening.
Very interesting
I'd say Aerosmith as they have a very wide appeal
but I don't think they would be in the budget
Speaking for the older crowd, not really interested in DJ's
If there are theme rooms or even different rooms that another story
To me DJ's, techno (is there even a such thing anymore), industrial, trance and the other somewhat similar branches of music just aren't conducive to a good time
However to others they may be
Prodigy, Chemical Brothers?
Good call on Prodigy Vick.
Now im going to have to dig out their Fat Of The Land album to drive GA crazy haha.
Regards,
Lee

Hell I'd suggest the Bloodhound Gang but think I'm one of the few that would really appreciate them
My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult (the are touring opening for Ministry currently)

I'd love an excuse to break out the spandex...most of the hairbands are reforming lately and playing small clubs, so would have some appeal for us older types as well as be easy on the budget.

D$$, How about Linkin Park or Slipknot or System of a Down ?
or here is one everyone can enjoy The Eagles
Prodigy newest cd (releasing in 2 weeks time) is a disappointment :(
Something a bit more laid back attitude, but still have style...
Salsa, Jazz, Irish Pub...
or just throw a US version of the Oktoberfest (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000000L6T/qid=1093562208/sr=ka-3/ref=pd_ka_3/103-6361745-8243034) :hic:

Sykk has a good point, pretty sure Vince Neil is affordable (I see him play a local club here ever 6 months) and he does all Motley Crue songs
Plus Vince Neil loves porn, not sure how well that would go over with everyone though

If you could get different rooms - for different themes, that would really work. Have a DJ just for dance music & tell him what YOU want (DJ's tend to stray into what they like instead of what is requested sometimes)
Geesh, I would be happy with Dick Clark & Peter /Paul & Mary. hahahahahaha - How about a 'hippie party, or is that before everyones time....ahahaha? I won't mention a sock hop - that would really date me :redance:
You might want to carry this thread into tomorrow. Many have already left their computers for the day.

Nixxi Sixx plays in a band call Brides of Destruction with Traci Guns. I saw them and they were great
Vince Neil tours occasionally with his own band but they do all Crue songs, have seen them here in Baltimore at least 5 times in the past 2.5 years
Vince Neil looks to be having a great time, sometimes they don't even bother with a song list and just get the crowd to yell what they want to hear
One Janurary Vince Neil flew here right from the AVN show, from Vegas right into a blizzard
Tommy Lee is doing who knows what, I think he was playing somewhere in Vegas
Mick Mars is setting home, he has a degenerative bone disease

Among the many ideas here so far, I like Lee's. Not only does a group from the 80s (give or take five years) have appeal to the older crowd, but they are more affordable and easier to book, I'm sure. Win-win for everyone.
Bands ... Hmm. The Brian Seltzer Orchestra would go better with Zoot Suits than hip-hop as a match. Who else is out there these days who's not unaffordable but on the other hand aren't dead or singing with oxygen tanks? :)
Dire Straits? The Fabulous Thunderbirds? Eddie Money still around?

Been done already back in 97 or 98.
Club Casa Rossa party.
Wasn't even the original members. Weak.
I agree with an older rock band, and some cool DJ's with quiet rooms for the old folks.
Some suggestions are great, some re-affirm how great the Players Ball talents really are.

Man, I this could go all over the road...
You could do a lounge lizard party, go for a jazz fusion or drums'n'bass feel, keep it a little more calm, slowly sink into a more hardcore dance mix as the night goes on...
if you want music acts that are different, let's see...
GWAR - Me and Sykkboy would have a blast, would probably clear the room in seconds.
Jerry Lee Lewis: The killer is still at it.
Any number of ignorant 70s and 80s bands are out there... Deep Purple, Scorpions, yadda yadda... but they would all be MAJOR loud.
Something unique might be an "unplugged" style show... that could help keep your noice levels down.
I dunno... it is hard to hit everyone's preference.
Alex
Geez, I guess I'm going to agree with Lee too! :awinky:
The 70's-80's band idea is great for us old folks... still loved that Hustler party @ House of Blues with that 70's band... what were they called? That's right - Boogie Knights... that was pretty cool. One of the better parties I'd attended at the Vegas venues.
Just recently introduced my teenagers to The Rocky Horror Picture Show this week, so of course that's stuck in my head as a theme party. I remember a discussion a long while back with the old timers about memories of going to the midnight show... that could be a fun blast from the past complete with costumes and all... *sigh* (showing MY age now - lol)
Anyway... I think this is great that you're bringing this to the people D$ - excellent idea! :okthumb:

LOL Kath you make it sound like we have never agreed on anything before LOL
On the off-chance that the 70's 80's theme is taken i would like to suggest the following groups..
Tom Petty - Already been mentioned i know but its been years since i saw the guy in concert.
Dire Straits - Again already mentioned but ive never had a chance to see them live :(
Cyndi Lauper - I like her music :)
Crowded House - Not heard much of them in a few years.
Regards,
Lee
dire straights :wnw:
as for crowded house ... they split up several years ago, neil and tim are back as 'the finn bros' or something crap. not impressed with any of their music so far, but then i'm a crowded house fan from way back so i'm biased. :biglaugh:
I think the reality of this event is whoever has a contact or knows someone who knows someone - that's who we'll end up with. Not sure that anyone has 6 figures + these days to contribute to pay a band to show up.
Unless D$ can get a band to play for the love of porn LOL
Why not just find a really good cover band that can play everyone's music choices? its more realistic.
or if all else fails .... karaoke :biglaugh:
Wow didnt know that about Crowded House.
Im going to have to look for their new stuff now :)

I can't promise I can make it happen for sure, but I'm trying my hardest.
First you get a feel for sponsors and dollars, then you search for talents within that budget.
I love Crowded House. They'd be a great show.
Another I'd look into for pleasing the masses and keeping the right vibe, Steve Miller Band. I'm not sure if they still tour, but I'll look into it. Cheap Trick would rock too.
Cover bands are a decent idea as long as there is a main attraction that is a famous artist. Boogie Nights is over priced and it's not the same group, it's more of a franchise of bands, but it doesn't matter since it's all cover tunes anyway.
The loud metal and glam rock bands are a good idea if it were acoustic. Noice levels turn off certain crowds I'd like to appeal to. So I gather a cool rock band early on, then a cool alternative DJ for later. The hard thing is making sure the room doesn't clear.
How does this sound. 1 night for a rock show. Keep the rock fans all night. Another night for Alternative artists including DJ's and post modern type of music. Then the Players Ball the last night keep true to that theme and music. 3 nights to please everyone and I'll finally make almost everyone happy. With some quiet time during each for the old folks.
A 3 day festival of parties organized by yours truly, backed by different sponsors for each event. Each event named differently.
Who would sponsor and for which themed night? Rock, Alternative and Hip Hop.

Actually, I'm looking to book GWAR...awaiting word back from their management. I'm also waiting for some info from the Huntridge Theater (great place for a GWAR show because of the high ceilings, but it's a bit of a travel and if any webmasters wander off, there are some rough neighborhoods close by).
GWAR works fairly cheap and would do it for a low 5 figures, if that and beer plus maybe hobknobbing with a couple porn stars.
I'm also looking to book Satan's Chherleaders for the show, but have no details until i hear back from their repsective management companies.

they did a tour of USA and Canada mid this year, not sure if they are still on tour though
They had a massive 'farewell crowded house' concert about 5 years ago in sydney - still devastated I missed it!
D$, not sure about 3 parties ;/
but I guess it depends on the sponsorships you get ... personally I will never sponsor another 'party' - there are cheaper, more effective ways to brand a product. I don't see the value in having a banner in a room full of drunk/drug fucked people who won't even remember who sponsored it. While I know I don't represent the majority, almost everyone is smarter (and tighter) with their money these days ... but I don't attend shows these days though so you could safely ignore all of the above :biglaugh:

Sykk, you think maybe you can get GWAR to do X-cops as a warm up? Last time I saw them there were doing that, funny as heck...
D$, another choice is to look to see who is playing Vegas around that time, and see if they can open up their schedule for another event or a private run. You might be able to get off a bunch cheaper that way.

I'd love to see Velvet Revolver or Queens of the Stone Age.
Queens is affordable. Foo Fighters is probably too expensive.
Usually artists price themselves by how many hits they perform. The more current the hits, the higher the price.
Sykk, Gwar would be a fun show. It's messy though. Make sure your venue knows about the bloody mess on the floor.
Doing 3 nights of parties is unrealistic considering the state of our industry and sponsorships, but it's nice to get your feelers out there and see if maybe the industry can afford it.
I'm looking into a magician to pull a sheep out of a hat as well. For Serge.

Here's the question.
What percent of the people would attend it for sure if it were "this" kind of music.
Rock - includes a range of 70's and 80's glam rock (or not), hard rock. Basically, a rock night with a few artists. Cheap Trick, Eagles, Steely Dan, etc. Keep in mind, the expensive ones we could replace with a cover band, then get another famous artist to still play later.
Post Modern and Alternative classics - Depeche Mode and other post modern acts. Cure cover bands that play other stuff, Crowded House, General Public, Oingo Biongo, Madness (ska), you get the idea.
50's and 60's era music
Blues
DJ's that are cool and underground. Famous but not too famous.
These are the kinds of "other" types of talents I see people are looking for. But which category of music or theme fits the crowd of people we'd like to see attend.
My take from what I'm seeing and hearing is Rock mixed with a DJ that plays Post Modern/Alternative.
Does it matter if a big name even performs?
Once I figure these questions out, I'll make a decision and try to get sponsors.

Rock, and post modern is my vote
If the purpose is business/networking, then I like almost any kind of music, however I find it hard to do business, if music is extremely loud/annoying - I do not need a sound proof room to do business/networking from, just music which is relaxing for both the brain and ears (meaning music sound level at low to moderate), and lights/surroundings/atmosphere where the body can relax (no packed area with strobe lights, and smoke) - sure its ok to have something which draws people to the place and makes it memorable/stand out, but it should be a single timed event, which is relaxing before and after, not a 4 hour nonstop headbanging mania.
Now, if the main purpose is not business, but to party, then I will be with the "old folks" sipping water at the Hotel - waiting for the employees to return, so I can tuck them into bed and kiss them goodnight... and btw. I´m a "young guy", just think there is a place and time to do business, and another place and time to party... and if I was there, then I would be there for the business :)

to get surfers to the party yes, but for webmasters I strongly doubt it ...
as I said, unless it was one of my personal fave bands i wouldn't attend just to see someone 'famous' ...
finding a band that's 'a personal fave' of lots of people (as this thread shows) is impossible.
I like the sound of rock band with a dj afterwards ... classic party format.
The guests are what make a party successful anyway.

It's impossible to make everyone happy. It's even more impossible to find a single musical act that would appeal to EVERYONE. If that's the goal, go for an "entertainer" over a current big name recording artist.
But you really have to figure out what your goal is for the party and the people attending. If the idea is to draw the GFY masses, perhaps even getting them to pay to attend and build a rep for throwing "off the hook" parties, then hip hop is probably the ticket.
I agree that I'm not sure a musical act makes a difference at all for the more mature segment of the industry (that sounds better than "old folx").
My favorite party every year is the Gameworks party. I dont really go to play games, though I might play a few. But the real appeal for me is that it is a big party and everyone is there at some point during the evening, but the facility is laid out in such a manner that there are lots and lots of alcoves where you can get together and talk and hang out in small groups.
The DJ last year spun a really good mix spanning classic rock to hip hop....loud enough to enjoy but not so loud you couldn't have a conversation. Totally open bar and finger foods are also a nice touch. I'm not privvy to the numbers, but just based on observation, my guess is that is probably the most universally attended party of the show....at least it's the one where I seem to always see EVERYONE.
I hope that party is on again this year.
Sharpie

Impossible to please everyone.... the group is too diverse.
But, I would definiately start will the more mellow stuff first. Give us ole folks a chance to enjoy & network, before bedtime..... ahahahahha - then bring on the louder stuff to suit the late night crowd, and be entertaining after the booze is flowing & biz is pretty much done.

Stick to the hip hop. They bring a bigger crowd, and most of the older webmasters never attend any of the parties anyway.

I'm looking into an incredible rock cover band. They have to sound perfect though, or it wouldn't work. I'm thinking if I did 1 party, the rock cover band would start earlier then the other artists. The problem is, once the rock band ends, 1/2 of the crowd will probably leave if it turns into a hip hop show.
Maybe we do a rock cover band then Earth Wind and Fire or something like that. Some old school 70's funk would please everyone. Or George Clinton and P-Funk, War, Gap Band and some other older bands. I'm looking into all possibilities and then evaluate what's the best for our audience and price range.
I'm not trying for one specific crowd, GFY, Oprano, Netpond, etc. I just want to have everyone from all crowds be able to kick it under one roof and have a great time. That's the goal. I've got some ideas brewing. Can anyone sing? Maybe we can get a few webmasters on stage with a band to back them up. That would be cool to watch if they can really sing.

I am personal friends with the guys in the HellHounds...thats the reformed Ga Sattelites as well as the guys from Jackyl.
 who are they [/b][/quote]
They are playing at the reception you will get to hear them all along with Fusebox.

I wanted to hire GWAR to play my wedding reception, but my wife decided it wasn't such a good idea...in fact, she felt inserting the wedding cake toppers into my ass would be a better idea then hiring GWAR for our wedding reception....

Kid Rock would be awesome. He does a lot of old songs from Skynyrd, Zeplin, Stones and more so it's not to much hard rock. I've seen him live 3 times, all great shows. And c'mon the man was bagning Pam Anderson, you know he'd be game for an adult convention.

I'd love to have Kid Rock. I think he's been to a Players Ball of ours before. My agent said he bumped into him there.
He wants over $100k usually. I always ask their camp for a price. I think he was $150k or so if my memory is correct.
I'll get more numbers by tomorrow on artists. I'd like to lock it in early.
another suggestion perhaps
A martini lounge, nice big overstuffed sofas and chairs, lot of tables and comfortable spots, funky swing groovy jazz - not too loud, maybe a bar to pull up to, maybe girls in bunny type outfits serving drinks (if they have Russian or Eastern European accents so much the better)
Some place stylish, cushy, classy. Where people can breath and talk and enjoy themselves. Maybe a nice view or balcony to escape to
Maybe talk a little business, maybe not
No pressure, relaxing and classic
Maybe some funky, fun movie eveyone knows playing on a big screen TV with no sound

And I'm headin out west sucker...because I wanna be a
Fatboy baby
With the top let back and the sunshine shinin
Fatboy baby
West coast chillin with the Boone's Wine
I wanna be a Fatboy baby
Ridin at night cause I sleep all day
Fatboy baby
And this is for the questions that don't have any answers
The midnight glancers and the topless dancers
The candid freaks, cars packed with speakers
The G's with the forties and the chicks with beepers
The Northern Lights and the Southern Comfort
And it don't even matter if the veins are punctured
All the crackheads, the critics, the cynics
And all my heros in the Methodone Clinic
All you bastards at the IRS
For the crooked cops and the cluttered desks
For the shots of jack and the caps of meth
Half pints of love and the fifths of stress
For the hookers all tricking out in Hollywood
And for my hoods of the world misunderstood
I said it's all good and it's all in fun
Now get in the pit and try to **** someone
Damn it you made me bring it

At least you've been saying the same 3 options for the last 6 years.
David Blaine was too much money, maybe he came down in price.
Doobie Brothers would be cool, I'm sure it wouldn't be the original. Didn't they do that farewell tour in 1980?
Neil Diamond would never perform at a Players Ball. Maybe the crowd would rock to that, who knows.
The original Kiss would be a hit though. I've tried for that before, I'll see if they are in the running.

Neil must be getting around with a walker by now, no? hehe

David Blane is probably still trapped in that ice cube.

I'm tempted to try Dave Chappelle.
Maybe he could get everyone's attention.
Comedians are tough with our crowd. No one pays that much attention to the stage, people socialize. I wonder if he'd be a hit or ignored.
Cypress Hill might be locked in soon, or Ludacris. BUT, that's just the main act. As of now I've decided to book a rock cover band or a real famous classic rock band, old school. Then I'll still have DJ's and other artists.
Cypress Hill is a nice choice for our "slightly" older crowd. But still, we're gonna add some new dimensions to the line up for 2005.

Of course Chicago would be great, but don't think you would ever get them. They are probably still making the 'big bucks.
Comics are great, but from my experience, they only work for a sit down type event.... This group can't shut up long enough to listen. Especially after a few drinks.
