Even the players have a little hate built in.

They just don't show it.

We're not much different really.

I can assure you that we never issued or sold passes to the public during those Players Balls.

People pay door men, newbies grab passes from the show floor and take extras (lesson learned, no more of that).

I can say that the worst ass fucking I took from a venue, by the way I figure it, no official count, I think C2K once let in 25% public into our event and it was noticable.

The other C2K events I've thrown, I'd be surprised if we had over 5% to 10% from the public sneak or pay their way inout of the other 4 Balls I've thrown there. Which is pretty good if you consider how hard it is to control your own parties in a Vegas club.

The last Players Ball was all industry, moved venues to Prana Lounge.

This next Players Ball will be all industry because it's smaller again. Maybe 2000 webmasters. Sponsors get all of the passes.

RawAlex

Might I suggest that for the next one, you hire your OWN security, and not let the club get involved at all, except to oversee it? Get them working for you, not against you? Lessons should be learned regarding things like dress code, and such. If there is a dress code, put is clearly on the invites. If there is NO dress code, don't let the doinks from the club try to enforce it at the door.

I was very happy to miss a certain miami party when I heard what a clusterfuck the door became.

Alex

PS: If you have 2000 passes and 300 VIPs, make sure the areas are BIG ENOUGH for that many people. Nothing like getting a pass to an exclusive party then having to hand out at the door for an hour to get in... only to find the people you wanted to hook up with were the ones that just left so you could get in.

Good points made, and lot's of past lessons learned, I'm with you on that.

Controlling a venues security 100% won't happen. It's just not possible. You have to consider which venues have a history of fucking people and which are great to work with. The best you can do is hire your own security and under cover spotters to watch their security. I've learned to set the tone early and catch them the first time they attempt to even pocket money for line priviledges or getting inside. I have them removed right away, then I bitch slap the next guy at the door.

I'd be happy with last years venue again, 100% on the same page with me. I just would prefer a venue where more people can see the big budget artist.

The important thing for me is that we have walking space and elbow room. We've been really good with that the last few parties. There is a ratio to how many passes are issued versus how many show up, I think I have that ratio down these days. The next party might be the best one I'll ever throw.

I attended a few of the first 3 or 4 players balls

Seeing George Clinton/P-Funk was great

While it is a great party and D$ does a lot of work the more the party drifts toward rap/hip-hop the less it personally appeals to me
Again that doesn't mean it's not a great function, just not my flavor of Ice Cream

The first one I ever attended was the toned down version in San Diego. The others really haven't appealed to me.....

But now that I've met D$, I might have to attend just because he's a good guy :awinky:

Gonzo, let's do the show anytime you'd like, I'm free next week if that's good for you.

I'm not sure if we'll mention certain things until the time is right, but there will be some interesting news I can say for that about the next Players Ball for sure.

And just for the record to those who haven't attended a Ball since 2000, there have not been crazy long lines anymore or crowded venues. I've worked hard on that and made it the first priority. So come back in 2005 and see for yourself.

D$, you are the king of organising parties ... there's no doubt about that - there's just a lot of the population that doesn't like rap/homie/hizzouse/hopping/hipping stuff ...

Your parties are 'da bomb' for the crowd that likes that sort of thing, but for the rest of us its just not worth it to line up for *any* amount of time to see a performer who we don't care about.

With that said, you can never please all the people all the time ... Why don't you go all out and make the parties for the general public and a few porn stars, charge for entry etc like you do for non industry parties? This biz is splitting very evenly into 2 groups in the last couple of years- business people, and leisure people .... you either want 1 or the other at your parties, its virtually impossible to have both.

I really enjoyed the first 2 players balls I went to, although we had to bribe security to let us in on 1 occasion. Once you get to the VIP rooms its ok ... its just the nightmare outside that sucks.

But how do you avoid the nightmare when you get/advertise performers that the general public wants to see more than webmasters do?

Sabby
08-25-2004, 10:38 PM
Well I have never been to a Players Ball, But I did go to the first PHB and I had an absolutely wonderful time with the sexiest and classiest men in the industry :)

They were both on the same day and I had to make a choice.

Plus 8000 unique webmasters really scares the fuck out of me, LOL.

Okay, let me toss you some more suggestions:

Don't hire a musical act that comes with 100 gang members attached to them. While that might get you a name performer, it also isn't a really good mix with the people attending. I suspect you are really lucky that no drunken fool in the crowd dissed S-D-D, his boys look like they were ready for that. I don't think any of us plan a night out that involves gang warfare.

Book a big act. Announce it as "a big act - you'll see when you get there" and then blow our miinds when we are in the room. Keep it on the QT and you won't get as many locals trying to suck their way in.

Get the sponsors to give invites to ONLY people who are part of their programs and have sent signups. The biggest scam in Vegas now is locals getting internext & video show badges so they can get into all the "porn parties". 2 years ago, 3 different parties, the guy sitting next to me was a local, not in the business at all... just there to check out the "hot slutty girls". It was sad.

Don't sell tickets. Don't book a location that will be open to the public later, before, or whatever. Exclusive for the night.

Beyond the house doormen, setup your own door people to check people on the way in. let them have their little kingdom, then you can control what they let past. They can secure it all they want, and you can still check the bodies on the way in.

Make the deal clear on the passes: Cash bar, dress code (including what you can't get in with). Make the shuttle bus / limo thing VERY clear. make it clear where you get the shuttle, how far to the event, etc.

Hire a few extra people for the night at the hotel end to keep that all going well. Get a non-porn company (like a CC processor or something) to sponsor the holding area and get the hotel to approve banners, etc so people can find your stuff.

Alternately, you can hire me :-)

Alex

Hmm, the old PHB domain is no more.

D$, I love your shows, and you know that ... but ... as many have said, does it HAVE to be rap/house/gangsta to be a Pimp'n'Ho thing? I think this is cool for the GFY young'uns crowd, but I'd venture to say as the industry gets older and matures, so are many of the webmasters. In fact many of the older webmasters were to begin with. hehe And, while there are definitely some younger up-and-comers and some young movers and shakers, I'd venture to say that the majority of the "Real Playas" are not into that music either.

So to echo what others have said, wouldn't a musical lineup with a more general appeal be a greater asset and make for a better party?

I think that most of us on this board are the more business minded people who just can't handle the rap music. I liked the style of the San Diego party much better............ but then, there are many who love the opportunity to 'dress up & 'be somebody - even if they don't like the music. Then of course, there are those in the rap generation.

Can I smell a PHB quieter section at the Players Ball forthcoming...... ? Now, that would be wild!! Of course, I can't imangine how that would be posible, but put Billy, Gonzo & DMoney together - and nothing is impossible....ahahahahahahahaha

Bruuuuuuce! :rokk:

I do like the idea of a multi-roomed or multi-leveled place with different music in each. I'd venture that would be (for Players Ball or something else) the ultimate "make everybody happy" webmaster event!

I've been to a few clubs like that in the past (not at conventions) and those are great. You can pick the area with the music that best suits you, or spend your time bopping from one section to another.

... Just two more cents to pitch into the kitty.
