"Claire Armstrong Gallacher of Caris & Company, a retail analyst who specializes in furniture, said she did not see an end to spending on home furnishings - in fact, she said, the terrorist alerts will curb travel and keep people at home.

But even Ms. Gallacher sees a trend away from big-ticket items, which propelled Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware this spring.

"It's going to be the $30 picture frames, candles - not necessarily the $1,500 armoire," she said. But she is not worried about the stores' bottom lines. "They're lower-ticket items," she said, "but with a high profitability."
