I would go to Montreal and
1) prevent MoJo getting close in bed with Yishai,
something what costed me a few mils
2) had weasel wipe my ass as he requested insted of having Pushrod killing that deal

I would have opened a porn sweatshop and hired a team of monkeys to just buy domains, make fake sites and submit them to (yahoo) .

I did successfully submit many many domains to Yahoo but it was a serious money tree, I should have been doing it every second!

Would have re-invested more

Would have owned mainstream before/during the high flying days and been diversified enough to withstand the crash

Would have started a proggy much sooner

Would have gotten rid of former partners sooner

Would have bought a few (internet) properties that were offered to me that I didn't think were worth it at the time

am sure there are more, damn it hurts to think about

Now I can wish in one and shit in the other and see .....

wouldn't have spent all the money I made spamming newsgroups so damn fast....
would have re-invested better
wouldn't have left for the "greener pastures" of mainstream so fast and so thorough....
would have found a way to work for Busty Amateurs so I could take over before Jeff found God....

I also woulda bought soo many more typos had I not smoked and partied away most of my earnings instead of investing them.

I would have done everything then that I think would be the right thing to do now which I will, in turn, think was the wrong thing to do five years from now.

I don't think I'd do anything differently ...

Without the mistakes, I'd be no smarter now than in 1998!!!!

I'd probably have slowed down a little for my health and given myself a bit more credit for my achievements instead of comparing them to people with 20+ years on me ... but I wouldn't change anything major.

I try to imagine what life would be like without the mistakes, and I've come to the conclusion that without learning from our mistakes we NEVER change ... and without mistakes, we don't get the opportunity to see which path was the wrong choice.

1998? What would I have done differently?

I was in year 12 then ... If i could go back, I wouldnt have crashed my car into the principals car on the way out of the school after trashing it with a whole bunch of mates on the 2nd last day of school. Did anyone else ever have that tradition, the year 12's on the night of the 2nd last day would just trash everything, then run amok on the last day.

Difference was instead of running amok, at 2am in the morning i was exchanging phone numbers and contact details with my principal.

If i could go back, I would have just egged his car :P

I would have followed Rick's advice about domain names... I still remember thinking he was a jackass for spending $90K for porno.com.

I would have become the biggest spammer on the net and socked away 20 million or so!

I remember a mother calling a program I was doing some work for about a $30K check her 14 year old son had just gotten from us. They told her what it was for. She said "OK" and hung up. She didn't care and the program didn't care - $30K every two weeks worth of traffic was fine all around. :agrin:

Yup, the bigger opportunities missed were not porn.

But rather not doing a dotcom startup when VCs were throwing money at absolutely anything, popping an IPO, selling out and sailing off into the sunset with HUNDREDS of millions.

Guys like Mark Cuban got it right...

because i'm not sitting around whinging about mistakes I made in the past that I can't do anything about anyway?!?!? and pretending i've learnt something like you are?!

If I could go back to 98, I'd not spend so much energy for other people's benefit. I'd recognise that there is no such thing as friends in business and that following other people's advice gets you where THEY want you and nowhere else.

What would I do different?

Find a superior and dependable programmer who wasn't a total dipshit (I know of perhaps two out of a thousand) and never let him work for anyone else but me.

Become a lot meaner a lot sooner. (Has to do with some employees I no longer have working for me.)

Made lots of ugly sites. (In-joke for Nick.)

kath

The list of things I would do different is SO long... hard to say though because the things we do today - even the mistakes - make us into the person we are tomorrow... so maybe even our mistakes were a good thing in way.

Regardless...

#1 - Wouldn't have trusted certain people as much as I did...
#2 - Would have trusted certain people more than I did...
#3 - Would have taken more chances/opportunities that were offered that I turned down because of my silly professional "loyalty" issues...
#4 - Wouldn't have stopped building sites when I did and kept at least one foot in that door years ago...
#5 - Would have stuck up for myself more, been more assertive and not been such a passive, trusting, loyal schmuck...

That about covers it... at least the top 5... and most apply to the rest of the list as well in a nutshell... *sigh* Live and learn...

But I would have bought up a ton of domains names, that's for sure.

1.) Buy a lot of domains
2.) Sent traffic to my own group of paysites earlier
3.) Started a poker site

I would steal all the content on the net - build a network of tgps, and freehosts, and convince webmasters that its not about the amount of money you make - its about how many visitors you get, so you can improve your counter ranking, they would start sending me traffic, so they can be just as cool as me...
I would then expand this to webmaster boards - convince webmasters is not about how much money you make, its about how many post they make - by the end of 1998 I would be the coolest webmaster in the world banking a cool $30-100K per month, and having a post count of 23717. When I had paid for all my leased stuff, then I would reinvest all $1-3K I had left in big bling bling gold chains, which would give me more respect, when I travled to player parties around the US.

Damn - I wish I had done that, and not someone else... must have been an exciting time, insted of having to deal with bankers, lawyers, tax people, employees, brokers, lawyers, investors - and did I meantion lawyers? ;-)))
