View Full Version : Weird things on my new laptop

1. When someone ICQ's me, I get their posts either 2 or 4 times. This started off just being if they were in invisible mode, but now it's everyone. Not really a biggie, but it's irritating :(
2. I'm using Firefox, but when I open something up in IE, it looks VERY pixalated and I can't figure out where to change the settings. :(
3. I trying to download some Purecash (http://www.purecash.com) (gotta love creative spam....) banners and the promo screen doesn't load the frame. It doesn't do it in either Foxfire OR IE, but it's fine on my other computer.
I'm sure these are all VERY easy to fix, but I'm stumped and my brain hurts from driving to Atlanta and back already today. :awinky:
Thanks to anyone who can help!!

OOH! OOH! I know this one! I know this one!
Go to your display properties, choose settings, and then advanced. Change your DPI setting in the "general" tab to 96 dots per inch instead of 120. These new fangled laptops set too many pixels per inch. I know that because I had to figure out the same problem last week.

You're a technical genius! That solved my IE problem! :)
HOWEVER, now everything is little itty bitty - all my desktop icons, my email, my file folders :( This site has always been little itty bitty (not that it's a reflection on the owners..... :awinky: ) and while it's still small, I can't tell if it's SMALLER, lol!
Is there a way to make the IE look good and STILL be able to read my emails/folders/icons? Remember, I'm old and the eyes are weak B)
Thanks though!! :)
Change your screen resolution in Display properties again to say 800x600 or 1024x768...
:)

YIKES! It really hated that, lol!
And it didn't even fix the IE problem :(
I think I'm DOOMED!!

Call Dell support.
They will transfer you to India - where their slogan is "We put the DOT in DOT com!"
I'm an XP virgin myself at the mo
I've been getting some of the problems your getting such as the small icons and REALLY small web pages, but after changing down a resolution everything was peachy (pun intended :D )
Sorry, but I guess I'm a WIN98 kinda guy

You know, I've been having the same issues... I just got a Dell 8600 last week and I'm having a tough time figuring out all the settings. With the laptop monitor it insists that you set your resolution to 1600 by 1200. I can't see anything with that... I set my monitor to 1024 by 768, and at home my desktop icons are HUGE. At the office they look fine. It's a pain in the ass, but I am liking XP over Windows 2000. And the new laptop is MUCH better than the old one. :)

That's the exact one I got :) Which screen did you get? I got the middle one (not the cheap, not the expensive). Is this board TINY for you? :(
I like the speed more than my old one, but I wish I could SEE things on it!

I dunno, Bill pretty much picked it out for me. :okthumb:
I wanted to move up to 1280 by 1024, but it's just too damn small to read. I must be getting old. hahaha I set my screen to 1024 by 768 and everything is fine. Just a few little differences between XP and 2000 that I'll have to learn. I am VERY happy with this laptop overall...

I know what you mean, Peaches. On the laptop screen it tells you that, and it's absolutely right. It looks like hell if you don't have it at 1600. I use a port replicator at home and at the office, so I'm on a regular monitor, keyboard, and mouse. With that setup, if you change it to 1024 it looks fine. The laptop monitor is kind of like a wide screen TV though, and if you change the settings it looks all messed up. :(
edit: for grammar. :awinky:

This is really the worst place for me - and an Air Force message board - the rest of the websites I usually frequent are fine with Foxfire (not with IE, read first message, hehe) and have normal fonts for some reason...........I think Serge and Michael (and the AF) are just trying to make me feel older and blinder <_<
But I feel better knowing I picked the same laptop as Bill would have picked for a "non-Bill type" person. :okthumb:

Try installing Zone Alarm then disable FoxFire, we had problems with FoxFire on Win2000 and ME that we just didn't have time to troubleshoot so we went with Zone Alarm Pro. (it loves Nortons AntiVirus as well)

It was harmless though , all it did was turn there wallpaper into "hockey boy" , a pic of a very gay looking naked man holding a hockey stick, every now and again.

Mozilla Firefox is an excellent browser, but there is a big difference between Mozilla and Internet Explorer. Our designer uses Firefox, and I am always telling him to check his work in IE. Firefox does a much better job of rendering CSS properly, but IE is what most everyone still uses... IE is much more forgiving than Firefox in my experience. It does a better job with text.
I like Firefox though. Love the tabbed browsing and the plugins. :okthumb:

No I think they did that to BobX's beemer. LOL
then there was the designer in brisbane that was duck taped to his chair and dragged out onto the road with a "I am gay" sign on him :)
Then there was the time a guy was suing Scott.
So I phoned him pretending to be a Solictor making an offer from Scott to setlle , a substantiual sum.
Only condition , the guy suing additionally had to paint his ass blue and run round naked.
" Yes , it is outside the norm , but you are no doubt aware that my client is errr...somewhat eccentric".
He would have taken the deal too
:)
ahhh the good old days........ LOL
OK OK!!

Try dinking with your font settings.
Right click on desktop, hit properties, select "Appearance" tab. You should see a font setting at the bottom, go for large or extra large.
If that doesn't bring Firefox up in size with it, you can force it to have a minimum font size. Bring up firefox, hit tools->options->general. Click "font and colors". Make sure the dpi matches the desktop, and if you're still small, select a minimum font size that is of a size your eyes like.

No problem, but we get to select your wallpaper...and dont think you'll be able to reset it easily....I'll wait at least a month before telling you how to undo it.

I used to have this issue on my PC. The only fixed that worked was to uninstall it, and see if you can reinstall a different version.
For example, if you have the LITE version, try to get the full one, or vice versa.
I now use a Mac. I do not have these problems anymore. :nyanya:

1. When someone ICQ's me, I get their posts either 2 or 4 times. This started off just being if they were in invisible mode, but now it's everyone. Not really a biggie, but it's irritating :(
I used to have this issue on my PC. The only fixed that worked was to uninstall it, and see if you can reinstall a different version.
For example, if you have the LITE version, try to get the full one, or vice versa.
I now use a Mac. I do not have these problems anymore. :nyanya:
Yeah, I'm trying to put off reinstalling as long as I can....
How's that hard drive on your Apple laptop there, Cory? B) [/b][/quote]
If you haven't tried it lately, try Trillian. It's been pretty darned stable for the last 6 months or so at least.
Lets you be on ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, etc all at the same time. Imports over your address books with no problem (thank god!). It'll even let you do IRC if you do chatrooms. I used it for that last couple of times I've been in the Oprano Radio chatroom and it seems a lot more well behaved than the java client.
I agree on the Trillian thing HP, it solved a lot of problems for me.
There are settings to change your icons to large size in there too Peaches, I'm just too beat to give you the paths since Id have to look for it to tell you.
I love XP, I haven't rebooted in 33 days at this point and I don't have a memory bleed or any other problem with it. Lots and lots of standby time on it too :)

Ah hell, I forgot she wanted to change icon sizes too.
That one is on same menus just hidden one layer deeper.
1) Right click on desktop, hit properties
2) Select "Appearance" then click the "advanced" button
3) On the "item" menu select "icon".
From there you can make it as fat as you want it.
Fat is where it's at!

I DON'T!!! :o They just got too small (along with my email, XP tool bar, etc) when I did what Voo suggested :)
Read the first post again - those are my problems. I merely mentioned the small text here and on the Air Force site because it was appropriate to what was being discussed about the resolution of the computer.
AGAIN, I don't want to change my icons. I want IE to stop being pixalated, and if I can see this site and the AF site better in the process, it's a bonus. :okthumb:
I LOVE MY ICONS! :)

Okay, I'm out of the technical genius game...
Setting your DPI to 96 instead of 120 will stop image from being pixellated in IE. Apparently it makes the text too small. It did the trick for me using a monitor, but there is more to it with the laptop I guess...
Lower the DPI, change the fonts, small icons, big icons. You just can't please these women no matter how hard you try. :nyanya:

And it's not always straightforward as to which is dinner and which is breakfast....
