Just finished it.....I'd love to hear others' perspective on it....I'm a little torn....
Thoughts?

How ya doin' mama?
We had a big thread on the DaVinci Code awhile back. Serge and I both loved it.....it was a quick read....incorporates a lot of historical references, rat facts and fun tidbits, which made it fun for me.....I am a non-fiction reader usually.
Since then we've read all of Dan Brown's other books (Angels and Demons, Digital Fortress and Deception Point). For all the same reasons why you might have enjoyed DaVinci Code, you will enjoy Angels and Demons. I really liked Deception Point as well but would skip Digital Fortress if I had it to do over again.
There have been about 10 books published since the DaVinci Code came out, "proving" that the DaVinci Code is pure fiction, fun speculation....that Jesus WAS NOT MARRIED, did NOT have sex with that woman....etc...etc....

I started reading it on the flight to Cybernet but haven't had a chance to finish it yet. I enjoyed what I've read so far.

I loved it. Of course I pretty much have no use for organized religion myself. Too many people of religion and not enough people of faith IMHO.

Ying and yang. Before the DaVinci Code there were 20 or 30 books saying Jesus was married, etc.
Consipriacy nut, I am not. But to think secret society's might not exist seems foolish. (Btw, Sue, not debating you here, just your post got me thinking out loud it all.)
I do have to say there's too much there (historical not ficition) to ignore certain things. That the head of the First Crusade: traces his lineage to King David (through Jesus apparently), was placed in charge of Jerusalem (as "King" a title he wouldn't accept, but the power he did), that the Crusade occured after he conferred with the Pope, he happens to bring (or create) the first Knight Templars with him, happens to have them live secluded in a special place (where they could dig) when there was the entire Temple complex they could have used, happens to be the first head of the Privacy of Scion ... that is just one example of things that make one go hmmm.
Too many things like that which on their own make you wonder. Then each of those have tangible links to the next. For instance the Saint Claire / Sinclair guy who in 1390 not only controled that special French chapel and all the lands about it, but who also crossed to America (Rhode Island) and lived there for three years (a full century before Columbus). And who just happens to be another head of the Privacy of Scion AND a decendent of that same First Crusade guy. (Which according to legend makes him also a decendent of Jesus and David). Hmmm.

I think I read DVC too close to A&D. I read A&D first and really liked it and DVC was so similar to it that it really kind of had me wanting more :( I read Deception Point and liked it more than DVC - probably because it was finally something a little different and he was picking on someone else besides religion ;) I sent it to the kid and he's almost finished with it and liked it also.

the DC did not pic on religion. just catholicism. it was very well researched.
the organisation at the hear tof the book is very real
http://www.danbrown.com/novels/davinci_code/reviews.html
and are not against the catholic chruch, just like the masons. Of course there are extreme groups with Just as the church serves as a museum of cultures it has conquered through massive funding of wars and secretive links to the crusades, and missionary functions an the resulting wars that come from a nation that doesnt want what it is being dished.
sound familiar:) The Catholic church is a self admitted imperialist organization without a country. It is a source of pride for the church to have spread its message and gained so much wealth and power throughout the world. If the Muslim community was half the imperialist and half as well organization as the church, They wold be a far more fearsome and deeply insidious organization, and would probably have stable muslim governments all over the world.
The history of catholicism and specifically the church is a long and myserious one, perched on the fence between what is real and what is fable, a home to treasures of not only vast financial quantities, but of architecture, science, and art, some of which were created, some obtained through rightful means, some through the quashing of emergent thought that flew in the face of the doctrine. Any way you look at it or feel about it, it is one of the most complex structures (both psysical and societal and even philosophical)
and that, in the short run is good conversation fodder:)

Thanks for your thoughts guys!
I really enjoyed it myself...although I have yet to read any of his other books yet....but now I'm dying to....lol.
The tons of historical references made it a real page turner for me...I love history.
Makes me want to visit France, Scotland and England soooo bad now. ;)
Thanks for the reviews link Grimm....gotta love the text over the Mona Lisa graphic, "Why is this man smiling?" ROTFL! Although, didn't they mention in the book that DaVinci clearly intended people to perceive the ML as 'androgenous'?
Re: Jesus being married
I read an article on TDVC and it reminds us that in the time of Christ, it was quite unfavorable for a man NOT to be married, and that in all likelyhood Jesus WAS married. Definitely makes you think....
I've also read article reviews that blow a hole into the Priory's existance...well, they DO say it definitely existed, however, the nature of the 'club' was nothing more than "...friends getting together." I guess no one will ever know....
Although I think his writing was masterful at times, there were points where it was obvious what would come next. That was disappointing for me....
Overall though, I certainly give it 2 thumbs up...a great read!
Now, on to Angels and Demons...hehehe

I loved the book and can't wait to see what they do with it as a movie.
In the hands of Ron Howard, the movie should be good

Well his last effort, "The Missing" was a traesty to a well written novel "The Last Ride" by Thomas Edison.
So let see how he can do with this. I think it will make an awful movie, simply because the detail to hostory and the connections an symbols, and contradictory use of these symbols, and the heretical light they cast on the Catholic Church, will be left out, and therefore the sense of the overall message of the book would be skewed.
People would leave this movie thinking it was an attack on the Catholic Church, which it was not.
Angels and Demons would make a better movie, less history, more action.

Yeah, I read about the movie....I think Grimm is right in that it will be VERY difficult to get the audience to perceive the symbols and the scenario in the intended light....we shall see....
