View Full Version : What is Kerry's stance on porn?

I am very interested in Kerry's stance on the law and porn. I know Bush's stance. It's not good. The first thing I thought of is to see how Kerry voted on the Communications Decency Act. Here are the votes.
http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll...on=1&vote=00263 (http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=104&session=1&vote=00263)

It was bill S. 652

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?c104...45Eyuj:e253573: (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?c104:1:./temp/~c10445Eyuj:e253573:)

I am disappointed to find out Kerry voted for it. Anyone else have any other info on other bills or any comments he may have made over the years?

Kerry is a yes man unfortunatly....

I believe once he is in power that will change, but I am disheartened by his willingness to say what he believes is what the people want to hear as an answear rather than what he fells is the right answear!

but I still believe he is the better overall choice to lead us out of the problems we are facing today.

Come on, wake up. To get another 10 votes, Kerry would round up every pornographer and throw them into jail. He is a lifetime politician who beleives in nothing but trying to secure himself more power and money.

This industry is no safer with Kerry then it is with Bush. To think otherwise is wishful thinking or ignorance.

All politicians would scape goat this industry in a second if it meant getting more votes, or covering up other embarassing issues.

Generally, the democratic party is not specifically anti-porn, seemingly more oriented towards going after KP and such. The republican party by it's own definition is anti-porn.

The differences between the noises made with Janet Reno and John Ashcroft should tell you everything you need to know.

No Mike, I don't think ANY politician is pro-porn, that would be foolish... but there is a difference between "anti-porn" and "neutral". I also think there is a difference between "all porn people should be shot" and "get after illegal material and KP". Assclown has shown that he has little interest in making and distinctions between legal and illegal, it is all up to his personal level of disgust (he covered a freaking statue... enough said!)

Alex I think you give the far right christian conservatives way to much credit when it comes to policy and power.

Colin, can you post the numbers of obscenity prosecutions over the past 10 years. I saw you posted them on another board, I think the facts speak volumes.

Now, lemme see here.

Starting in about 1997 then-Senator John Ashcroft put together an exploratory committee to evaluate the possibility of running for higher office.

He was, for some time, the darling of the Rev. Pat Robertson, the Rev. Jerry Fallwell, and various and sundry other mullahs of the Religious Right, which of course, according to Mike from his vantage point neck deep in De Nile, doesn't really exist.

The exploratory committee was enough to convince him not to run. After being defeated in his last Senate race by a dead man, what interest group do you suppose his appointment was designed to please?

(Hint ... it ain't P.E.T.A. or the Log Cabin Republicans).

Anybody with a SHRED of objectivity and a mere TOUCH of common sense knows that the "stand" of a politician on porn is about as relevant as the stand of a politician on dog biting mailmen.

It's the judges, stupid.

Colin, from the #s i've seen in the past
the #s you posted seems really inflated and most likely include child porn cases.

As far as i remember there were only few cases durring Clinton years dealing with Obscenity

I'm interested in them if you have them.

Also, Bush declared a "Protection From Pornography Week" last year.

Also Colin, those numbers of obscenity cases, how many of them involved online commercial pornography, or commercial (ie: mainstream) videos or magazines?

Remember, obscenity can be as little as Bono saying "fuck" on TV.

Why do I need to "remember" anything? I posted the statistics in reply to a question made at GFY. Mike asked for me to repost the stats here.

Just for the record, though Ashcroft's hiring of obscenity prosecutors and Bush's declaring a "Protection from Pornography" week have unnerved me on the issue, I see little evidence that his actions are any worse than Kerry's yeah vote and Clinton's signing of an unconstitutional CDA. Thankfully the ACLU was there to press our case and the Supreme Court saw our point of view.

We have to go back to Jimmy Carter to find a real friend.

its not kerry that im worried about.

its not bush that im worried about.

its ashcroft, and to be honest, i don't know how many people are more extreme than ashcroft is.

bush or kerry will never wake up one day and say "hey, its time to stop pornography." the president has too many things on his mind to worry about porn.

but ashcroft will. I'd like to know who Kerry would appoint as Attorney General.

Colin, I think that had 9/11 not occured, most of us would be out of business or up to our eyes in legal costs. In a very weird way, our industry has been saved because Ashcroft and his cronies have enough prisoners to bash on and supposed terrorist cells to dismantle. Had this not come to the front, I am confident that we would have been his #1 target.

When Bush finally gets the troops out of Iraq (and I think it will be Kerry getting the out, but that is another story), and when things calm down a bit, I think you will see the domestic issues come to the surface, and ashcroft's merry men will be out looking at websites and viewing videos and getting all pissed off.

Giving Bush a second term is like poking a sleeping bear with a sharp stick.

As for "remember", it is because while numbers don't lie, without backing they are just meaningless numbers.

That may be so. I have no idea. By the same token, what would have happened IF the Supreme Court had not ruled CDA unconstitutional?

I don't disagree with you that Bush and Ashcroft are a threat to the industry. Just how much of a threat though is really anyone's guess. Whether we would be "out of business or up to our eyes in legal costs" is completely conjectural. I have to say, overall, I don't disagree with the basic premise. Conservatism is bad for porn. There is some anti-porn momentum and another term of Bush might really bring it out. I'm voting Kerry - depending on how the world looks in November.

I don't think it's realistic though that the average pornographer is going to come under fire.

This is pretty funny.

Between quotes from Ashcroft in 1997 before he was Attorney General, to saying the numbers reported by the gov't are wrong and must including KP. You people will say ( or beleive) anything.

Ashcroft is a wierd guy, but he has done NOTHING in 3 years to effect this industry.

What has the "porn czar" in Utah done the past few years? I have read nothing.

You liberals have plenty of reason to support Kerry, and hate Bush - but there is not valid facts that prove the Bush administration is cracking down on pornographers. Could this merel be because of 9-11 and terrorism?? Possibly. But the reality is Bush has done no more then Clinton in this area.

It is amazing how liberals cannot argue facts, they have to go with emotional rants to try and prove a point.

Bush backed COPA, created a "protection from pornography week" and the Justice Department created 32 positions with the intent of prosecuting anti-obscenity cases. The statements coming lately and recently from those at the Justice Department are fair warning. The Conservatives are at the gates.

I support COPA. The less free porn that was on the net, the more money we would all make.

"protection for pornography week" sounds like something that has been done every year by every President. It is like Flag Day, or Secretaries Day.

The prosecutors they have hired is the only legitimate sign. Myabe the are going to be tasked with getting KP? There are some things being produced now that do cross the line. How many federal prosecutors are there in the US? What percentage is 32?

Both Bush and Clinton backed COPA and it is telling that federal courts found the bill to be unconstitutional. Certainly, there is hardly a politician who is a friend of porn. Some of the legislation like this has been proposed by democrats and some by republicans.

The 32 prosecutors were only very recently hired and there are more funds proposed for 2005. I don't think Bruce Taylor was hired for no reason at all.

We've been stuck with this pathetic definition of obscenity for 3 decades. It's absurd. One doesn't even know when one is breaking the law. That to me is where a change needs to be made.

The average pornographer can be put on the spot so quickly it would make you sick.

Nope, just pointing out the last time you had a republican president, a religeous AG, and a national cold spell against sex / porn / adult stuff, you got meese, and many many people got screwed over.

There will be no Meese Commission version 2. The first one was a failure.

Porn is out of the bottle, never is going to be put back. Only thing Gov't can do is got after kiddie, and extreme stuff, and maybe pick off little guys who do not have their acts together. ( 2257 and such)

RawAlex

Mike, I am sure they won't go the meese route, but they are planning an attack... and they are more likely to make that attack during a second mandate (less to lose, a president can do most of the unpopular things at the start of that mandate).

Mike, if you think "legal porn" will get a pass, your kidding yourself. They will almost certainly use any possible means to get to the movers and shakers of this industry. Zoning (do you have a business permit for your home office? Are home based businesses legal in your area?) retail licensing, model releases, payroll, taxes, whatever. Assclown hates porn, and will use any tool he has to try to squish all of us.

Obscenity is just the front door way... there are so many windows, backdoors, and skylights they can some through.

I agree that they will overall try (some will say continue?) and hit the supply chain instead of trying the obscenity argument...

They want to control the size, content, practices etc. of the industry - I think they will fail, but that will probably not stop them for trying.

Cummon man, almost every politician says what he believes the people want him to say, otherwise he'd have no use for 'advisers'.
