OK...
So my kid is graduated...and he would like to go to Rome, Italy.
I am considering the Sheraton Roma...
Since I know there is a "Frequent Flyer" that hangs around here,
I am looking for any advice on the City, and "stuff" I should know.
(I am not going, just him and his mom and my daughter)

1) how long are they staying there?

2) what is the budget?

7-8 days

there may be a fourth person (his girlfriend)
so I am trying to be frugal
They do not expect 5 star or to be pampered.
:)

Right now I have Continental @978 each
and the Roma is 175 EU per night.

Close to all the tourist stuff.

in this case, it pays to rent an apartment instead of the hotel.
We stayed at
http://www.romeholidays.net/eng/pantheoneng.htm
last year,
more than plenty for 2 , good for 3,
in the dead center of the city
you can get them something bigger though. You are paying for 4 for a week what you'd be paying for EACH at the hotel
;-)

here is another option
http://www.affordabletours.com/Globus_Tour..._Claridge).html (http://www.affordabletours.com/Globus_Tours/Italy/Globus_A_Week_in_Rome_(Hotel_Claridge).html)
if they need guides and tours included
which is about what you would pay at the hotel per each, but this one included breakfasts and sightseengs

show the entire Nothern Italy for less than just staying in Rome at Continental

word of advice:
never buy their air,
you can ALWAYS find better deals on your own on Orbitz

Mike - I was there not too long ago - I really recommend hanging around the colleseum and then joining some free tours. If you hang around the Collesuem/Forum area you'll see people marketing themselves. I ran into this one girl with a masters in art history and she was amazing. They try to upsell you on another paid tour (which we did and was well worth it - but there is certainly no pressure to do so).

If you are going to stay that long in one place, and do not need room service going with a flat or apartment is definately the way to go.

You end up paying much less, and get a better feel of the sourroundings.

You will have fun Mike!!

I am not going unfortunately....
Its my kids grad present before he goes to active duty in August....

Wow you are generous! Wanna send Katie and I to keep an eye on them?

Many of the great old Roman Buildings were built when you were younger - I figured you would go see....

It is amazing the Pope continues to slam moral decay of the US ( he has some points), however he has refused to crack down and come clean with all the pedophiles in the church, and how the church has protected them from prosecution. Many times the church moved priests who abused kinds to another parish, and did not notify the parents at all.

It is shameful conduct, and they try to sweep it under the rug!

I used to like John Paul II, he was good during the cold war - but I ost respect when he did not send out a clear message about priests molesting kids.

Mike - My opinion is that I wouldn't do Rome for just 7 days. I think 4 days is probably enough. I think that Rome itself is good for 2 - 3 days and then you can have them do Pompei (Pompey).

Religious authorities, just like political ones, can never admit fallibility - that diminishes the "institution's" basis for self-justification. Even when dealing with apologetics, etc., - the institution is never wrong, only the human application of that institution...the innate truth of the doctrine/institution has to stand.

Sergie - I agree that one could spend that much time there - especially as an art lover, but most people (especially with kids) aren't going to want to look at that many museums/art for 7 straight days.

Mike - I would certainly recommend the Vatican for 1/2 day - full day as well (Probably better not to go on Sunday - busy busy). Try to get a tour if possible. I didn't do Pompei - but I would imagine that is pretty cool.

I understand this, but their is no Church doctrine promoting preists who molest kids. The Church lost a lot by not addressing this correctly.

What's wrong is the institutional denial and hiding. How can you have a self justifying authority/institution that is institutionally flawed...? Apologists are gonna have a bitch of time with this one.

Don't ask the weasel. For a guy supposed to be making all that money he didn't even know if his atm card would work in paris.

Proves a couple of things I guess
1. I guess you don't know anything about such matters if you aint never been anywhere.

2. Class and good taste can't be bought.

Guess its better to stick with what ya know when you don't know any better....a can of nipple cheese/cheeze whiz and a nice bottle of boones farm country quencher.... Goes perfect with your leased ferarri and louis vitton purse.
